  • Ubiquitous computing is enhancing computer use by making many computers available throughout the physical environment, but making them effectively invisible to the user. To facilitate the successful adoption and diffusion of ubiquitous computing, it is necessary to figure out the factors affecting the use of U-service. Though the research related to ubiquitous computing has been vigorously conducted from the aspect of system and service provider, there have been very few studies that focus on the user's perspective. Therefore, this study attempts to figure out major factors which are dedicated to the development of ubiquitous computing and u-service, and that ultimately influence the u-business outcome. This study derived the factors that characterize u-service, such as ubiquity, contextual offer, reliability, invisibility, and confidentiality, which are then combined in the TAM model and carry out the path analysis. The research findings indicate that ubiquity affects both the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The reliability and confidentiality were found to affect the perceived usefulness, whereas the contextual offer and invisibility turned out to influence the perceived ease of use. Finally, the relationship among the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and the attitude toward using are identical with the previous research findings related to the technology acceptance model(TAM).

  • The concept of Health Related Quality of Life and its determinants have evolved since the 1980s. Although many researchers have published articles of technology usage in hospitals and the installation of technology based healthcare system, the research about applying the information technology to improve the patients' perceived quality of healthcare services is still limited. In general, services are deeds, processes and performances that are essentially concerns of the consumer. The healthcare service quality depends on tangible factors, such as equipments, facilities, and the quality of hospital staff and also the intangible ones. The main purpose of this work is to establish new model and find out the contribution of information technology to enhance the patients' perceived quality of healthcare service. We attempted to examine the main information technology related factors in 3 aspects, namely quality of information, the technology accessibility and the community that can improve patients' perceived quality of healthcare services. Offline and online questionnaires were used to measure the patients' perceived quality and were distributed to 384 people in 2 countries, Laos and South Korea. A principle component analysis and multiple regressions were used to verify our model. Results show that the use of information technology has partial positive effect on patient-physician interaction in both countries. However, patient knowledge and patient autonomy which are the 2 dimensions of patient-physician interaction has significant positive effect on patients' perceived quality of healthcare service.

  • The aim of this study was to understand the factors related to depression according to gender in vulnerable elderly. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 1,709 elderly beneficiaries of the visiting health care program in Seoul. Depression was measured using the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korea Version(GDSSF-K) questionnaire. Depression score was mild level in vulnerable elderly. There was no gender difference in depression level. Factors related to depression differ by gender. In the elderly men, higher depression showed significant correlation with a lower level of health-related quality of life(HRQOL) and self-rated health(SRH). In addition, higher depression was observed for elderly men living alone than for those living with family. These factors explained depression by 23.1%. In the elderly women, higher depression showed significant correlation with a lower level of HRQOL, SRH and a higher dependence of instrumental activities of daily living. In addition, higher depression was observed for elderly women who has fall experience. These factors explained depression by 22.8%. Gender-specific nursing strategies may be required for prevention of depression in vulnerable elderly.
