  • The effects of dietary eggs on liver and serum lipids, serum protein and mineral concentrations, and enzyme activities in male rats were studied. Sprague-Dawley rats were fed four types of diets for 4 weeks, respectively: a control diet, a control diet supplemented with 5, 10 or 15% eggs powder. In rats fed 5, 10 or 15% egg diets the body weight gain, the food intake, the weights of kidney and epididymal fat pad were similar to those in rats fed the control diet. The hepatic weight, hepatic cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations of rats fed the all egg diets were significantly higher than those of rats fed the control diet. The concentrations of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL+VLDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid in the serum of rats fed the all egg diets were similar to those of rats fed the control diet. In the rats fed 5% egg diet the HDL-cholesterol/total-cholesterol ratios was significantly increased, and the atherogenic index was significantly decreased compared with those in the rats fed 10 or 15% egg diets. The serum total protein and albumin concentrations of rats fed 10 or 15% egg diets were significantly increased compared with those of rats fed the control diet. The serum calcium levels of rats fed the all egg diets were significantly increased compared with those of rats fed the control diet. No differences were noted in the concentrations of urea nitrogen, creatinine, glucose and hemoglobin, and activities of GOT, GPT, ${\gamma}-GTP$ and alkaline phosphatase in the serum among the rats with on all the experimental diets. These results showed that the all egg diets feeding increased cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in liver, but no differences lipids and lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in serum of rats.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among urn leptin, nutritional status, and urn lipids, glucose of 99 middle school girls residing in Kyluggi-do, Korea. Subjects were assigned to one of three groups such as underweight(BMI < 20, n=38), normal(20$\leq$BMI<25, n=36) and over weight(BMI$\geq$25, n=25) groups. The nutritional status of the subjects was evaluated by anthropometric measurements, questionnaires, 24-hr dietary recalls and blood anal),sis. The results were as follows : The mean age, body weight, height and BMI were 13.93 years, 55.19kg, 158.40cm and 21.96kg/㎡ respectively. The mean menarche age of the subjects was 12.64 years and the mean daily energy intake was 94.22% off RDA for Koreans. The energy ratio from carbohydrate fat and protein was 63: 24: 13. Underweight group showed the lowest intakes of oils and fats among three groups(p<0.05). The mean serum levels of leptin, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol. LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were 10.57ng/ml 78.80mg/dl, 12.29mg/dl, 48.07mg/dl, 93.50mg/dl and 78.61mg/d1, respectively. The mean atherogenic index was 2.37. There were significant increases in serum leptin, glucose, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride and atherogenic index of subjects with increases in their BMIs. Serum leptin showed a significantly positive correlation with BMI(p<0.001), body fat percent(p<0.001). When BMI was adjused, serum leptin showed a significantly positive partial correlations with intakes of animal protein(p<0.05), milks and animal foods(p<0.05), Serum leptin showed a significantly positive correlation with serum glucose(p<0.05) total cholesterol(p<0.01), LDL-cholesterol(p<0.001), triglyceride(p<0.001) and atherogenic index(p<0.001), however, it had significantly negative correlations with HDL-cholesterol(p<0.05). Therefore, these results suggest that the increase of serum levels of leptin may elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease and lipids and some nutrient intakes may be related with serum leptin levels. • Purpose: Recently, the prevalence of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease (EGID) has shown an increasing trend worldwide. As the diagnosis of EGID requires invasive endoscopy with biopsy, noninvasive markers for detecting EGID in suspected patients, particularly children, are urgently needed. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) beyond peripheral eosinophil counts in pediatric patients with EGID. Methods: Overall, 156 children diagnosed with EGID were enrolled and 150 children with functional abdominal pain disorder (FAPD) were recruited as controls. All participants underwent endoscopic biopsy in each segment of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and serum ECP measurement, as well as peripheral eosinophil percent and absolute eosinophil count. Results: Comparing EGID (n=156) with FAPD (n=150) patients, serum ECP levels were significantly higher in pediatric patients with EGID than in those with FAPD (25.8±28.6 ㎍/L vs. 19.5±21.0 ㎍/L, p=0.007), while there was no significant difference in peripheral eosinophil percent and absolute eosinophil counts between the two groups. Serum ECP levels were correlated with peripheral eosinophil percent (r=0.593, p<0.001) and the absolute eosinophil count (r=0.660, p<0.001). The optimal cutoff value of serum ECP for pediatric EGID was 10.5 ㎍/mL, with a sensitivity of 69.9% and a specificity of 43.4% with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.562. Conclusion: The combination of serum ECP levels and peripheral eosinophil counts, when employed with appropriated thresholds, could serve as a valuable noninvasive biomarker to distinguish between EGID and FAPD in pediatric patients manifesting GI symptoms.

  • The acute phase serum protein response is a well-known general indicator of inflammation, trauma or other pathological conditions and its relevance for the monitoring of the health status of domestic animals is being increasingly realized. The changes in serum protein composition which occur after tissue damage represent a part of the systemic response of the injured animals which is mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-$\alpha$, IL-6 and IL-1. These responses play a vital role in containing the tissue damage and enhancing the processes of repair and resolution. From a clinical perspective, the assay of acute phase proteins can provide a method for detecting inflammation. In animals, the most sensitive acute phase proteins are haptoglogin, serum amyloid A and at-acid glycoprotein in response to inflammatory condition. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of the concentrations of serum amyloid A(SAA) and haptoglobin(HP) in serum of pigs infected with Aujeszky's disease virus(ADV). Fifty pigs infected with ADV and 5 normal pigs were used in this experiment. The mean serum concentration of Shh of pigs infected with ADV was 96.8 $\pm$ 7.1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖(range, 36.0∼187.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖) and that of normal pigs was 42.9$\pm$3.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖(range, 17.3∼127.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖). The mean serum concentration of HP of pigs infected with ADV was 1,164.4 $\pm$ 96.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖ (range, 790.2∼l,769.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖) and that of normal pigs was 675.4 $\pm$ 56.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖ (range, 650.0-690.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎖). The mean concentrations of SAA and HP in serum of pigs infected with ADV compared with those of normal pigs showed approximately a two-fold. It was concluded that the concentrations of Shh and HP in serum may proved to be diagnostic marker of Aujeszky's disease.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of soy protein and soy isoflavones on bone and mineral density in young female Sprague-Dawley rats. Fifty eight rats (body Weight 75 $\pm$ 5 g) were randomly assigned to one of four groups, consuming casein, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate (57 mg isoflavones/100 g diet) or casein added isoflavones (57 mg isoflavones /100 g diet). All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) were measured using PIXImus (GE Lunar Co, Wisconsin, USA) in spine and femur on 3, 6, 9 weeks after feeding. The serum and urine concentrations of Ca and P were determined. Diet did not affect weight gain and mean food intake. Food efficiency ratio was lower In soy protein groups. The serum concentration of Ca and P were not changed by soy protein and isoflavones. Urinary Ca and P excretion were not significantly different. Spine BMD was significantly increased by soy protein isolate on 3 and 6 weeks after feeding. Femur BMD was significantly increased in the groups of soy protein isolate and isoflavones adding on after 9 weeks. Therefore, soy protein with rich isoflavones may be beneficial on spine and femur BMD increasement in growing female rats.

  • The foam separation of bovine serum proteins was investigated and the protein fractionation by foam separation was analyzed by PAG electrophoresis. The protein concentration for the surface excess formation of bovine serum was in the range of $20-800\;{\mu}g/ml$. At pH 5, the foamate volume was maximum, but the enrichment ratio minimum. As the temperature was elevated, the foamate volume decreased and the enrichment ratio increase. As the gas flow rate increased from 25 to 100 ml/min, the foamate volume decreased and the enrichment ratio increased. The enrichment ration became maximum when the added ionic strength of serum solution was in the range of 1-3 by the addition of different types of salts, and this was related to the reduction of surface tension of the solution. In general, BSA, ${\alpha}_1$, and ${\alpha}_2-globulins$, which have relatively small molecular weight and high hydrophobicity, moved easily to the foam, and the separation of protein fractions in the serum varied with the changes in pH, temperature, gas flow rate and ionic strength of the solution.
