Correlation between Velocity Fluctuation and Fluctuation of Hydrogen Concentration in 2-D Air-Hydrogen Supersonic Mixing Layer

  • An experiment was carried out to confirm the validity of time series evaluation of supersonic mixing condition by using catalytic reaction on a platinum wire. Geseous hydrogen was injected parallel to supersonic freestream (M$\infty$ $\approx$ 1.81) from a slit injector, which was located at backward facing step. Time series condition of supersonic mixing was evaluated by using W-type probe which has a platinum wire and reference wire (nickel wire). The evaluation was by simultaneously measuring each electric circuit which kept the temperature of wire constant. Investigations were also conducted for helium, air and no secondary injectant cases to compare with the hydrogen injectant case. The results indicated that it was possible to measure the time series behavior of air and hydrogen supersonic mixing layer or coherent motion of turbulence by using this evaluation.

  • The high frequency series resonant converter has been widely used for the non-contact power supply system with the large air gap and the increased leakage inductance of the non-contact transformer. However. the high frequency series resonant converter has the disadvantages of high voltage gain characteristics in the overall load range due to the large air gap and the circulating magnetizing current. In this paper, unit voltage gain is revealed in the proposed three-level series-parallel resonant converter. The results are verified on the simulation results and the 5kW experimental prototype.

  • In recent, there are tremendous requirements to improve the fuel economy of vehicle. For satisfaction of requirements, Hybrid Electric Vehicle or other technologies are suggested and implemented. However, it should be noted that almost 35% energy loss is occurred in the shape of exhaust gas as ever. For increase the efficiency of vehicle, it is certain that the exhaust gas energy should be recover, and generate energy. In previous studies, the technologies such as turbo-compound, thermoelectric and rankine cycle are suggested to recover the exhaust heat energy in vehicle. But, they focus on the conventional vehicle or parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle has advantage that the engine and drive shaft are de-coupled. It means that the engine can be operated in high efficiency area regardless with vehicle states. Therefore, if rankine cycle is applied to series hybrid electric vehicle, operating condition of that becomes almost steady. So, in this study, theoretical analysis on the efficiency of rankine cycle applied to series hybrid electric city bus is carried and the energy recovered from exhaust gas during vehicle drive cycle is calculated.

  • This paper presents the design of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) which is one of the key building blocks in modern wireless communication systems with small VCO gain (Kvco) variation. To compensate conventional large Kvco variation, a series varactor bank has been added to the conventional LC-tank with parallel capacitor bank array. And also, in order to achieve excellent phase noise performance while maintaining wide tuning range, a mixed coarse/fine tuning scheme(series varactor array and parallel capacitor array) is chosen. The switched varactor array bank is controlled by the same digital code for switched capacitor array without additional digital circuits. For use at a low voltage of 1.2V, the proposed current reference circuit in this paper used a current reference circuit for safety with the common gate removed more safely. Implemented in a TSMC 0.13㎛ CMOS RF technology, the proposed VCO can be tuned from 4.4GH to 5.3GHz with the Kvco (VCO gain ) variation of less than 9.6%. While consuming 3.1mA from a 1.2V supply, the VCO has -120dBc/Hz phase noise at 1MHz offset from the carrier of the 5.3 GHz.

Development of Optimum Parameters Sampling Program for Mica Capacitor Design (마이카 커패시터 설계를 위한 최적 파라미터 추출 프로그램 개발)

  • In this study, ultra high-voltage (170kV AC), reliable 80pF mica capacitors for partial discharge system application were investigated. For capacitors design, Program was developed to sampling of series and parallel parameters. Mica was used as the dielectric of the capacitors. Using the conservative design rule, over 3 individual 50$\mu$m thick mica sheets with a size of 30mm$\times$35mm were used with lead foils to form a parallel capacitor element and 20 mica sheets were interleaved with lead foils to form a series stack of parallel capacitor element to meet the requirements of the capacitors. The dimension of the fabricated 80pF capacitor for 17kV AC were 90mm$\times$90mm. The high-frequency characteristics of the capacitance (C) and dissipation factor (D) of the developed capacitors were measured using a capacitance meter. The developed capacitor exhibited C of 79.5pF, had D of 0.001% over the frequency ranges of 150kHz to 50MHz, had a self-resonant frequency of 65MHz.

  • There are several types of environment friendly vehicle being developed by auto manufactures. HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) is most applicable one among them in actuality. HEV has two power sources, one is an internal combustion engine, the other one is an electric device. The HEV is developed for reducing fuel consumption and emissions. We selected the diesel engine as a main power source of HEV. The tests were carried out under different driving cycles which was CBDBUS (Central Business Driving Bus Schedule) and HWFET (Highway Fuel Economy Test). This research presents a simulation for the fuel economy and the emission of heavy diesel hybrid vehicle according to the SHEV (Serial Hybrid Electric Vehicle), PHEV (Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicle), Plug-in SHEV and plug-in PHEV.

Development of Optimum Global Failure Prediction Model for Steam Generator Tube with Two Parallel Cracks (평행한 두 개의 균열이 존재하는 증기발생기 세관의 최적 광범위파손 예측모델 개발)

  • The 40\% of wall thickness criterion which has been used as a plugging rule of steam generator tubes is applicable only to a single cracked tube. In the previous studies performed by authors, several global failure prediction models were introduced to estimate the failure loads of steam generator tubes containing two adjacent parallel axial through-wall cracks. These models were applied for thin plates with two parallel cracks and the COD base model was selected as the optimum one. The objective of this study is to verify the applicability of the proposed optimum global failure prediction model for real steam generator tubes with two parallel axial through-wall cracks. For the sake of this, a series of plastic collapse tests and finite element analyses have been carried out fur the steam generator tubes with two machined parallel axial through-wall cracks. Thereby, it was proven that the proposed optimum failure prediction model can be used as the best one to estimate the failure load quite well. Also, interaction effects between two adjacent cracks were assessed through additional finite element analyses to investigate the effect on the global failure behavior.

Organic photovoltaic cells using low sheet resistance of ITO for large-area applications

  • Organic photovoltaic (OPV)cells have attracted considerable attention due to their potential for flexible, lightweight, and low-cost application of solar energy conversion. Since a 1% power conversion efficiency (PCE) OPV based on a single donor-acceptor heterojunction was reported by Tang, the PCE has steadily improved around 5%. It is well known that a high parallel (shunt)resistance and a low series resistance are required simultaneously to achieve ideal photovoltaic devices. The device should be free of leakage current through the device to maximize the parallel resistance. The series resistance is attributed to the ohmic loss in the whole device, which includes the bulk resistance and the contact resistance. The bulk resistance originated from the bulk resistance of the organic layer and the electrodes; the contact resistance comes from the interface between the electrodes and the active layer. Furthermore, it has been reported that the bulk resistance of the indium tin oxide (ITO) of the devices dominates the series resistance of OPVs for a large area more than $0.01\;cm^2$. Therefore, in practical application, the large area of ITO may significantly reduce the device performance. In this work, we investigated the effect of sheet resistance ($R_{sh}$) of deposited ITO on the performance of OPVs. It was found that the device performance of polythiophene-fullerene (P3HT:PCBM) bulk heterojunction OPVs was critically dependent on Rsh of the ITO electrode. With decreasing $R_{sh}$ of the ITO from 39 to $8.5\;{\Omega}/{\square}$, the fill factor (FF) of OPVs was dramatically improved from 0.407 to 0.580, resulting in improvement of PCE from $1.63{\pm}0.2$ to $2.5{\pm}0.1%$ underan AM1.5 simulated solar intensity of $100\;mW/cm^2$.

  • A swing level controlled voltage-mode transmitter is proposed to support a stub series-terminated logic channel with center-tapped termination. This transmitter provides a swing level control to support the diagnostic mode and improve the signal integrity in the absence of the destination termination. By using the variable parallel termination, the proposed transmitter maintains the constant output impedance of the source termination while the swing level is controlled. Also, the series termination using an external resistor is used to reduce the impedance mismatch effect due to the parasitic components of the capacitor and inductor. To verify the proposed transmitter, the voltage-mode driver, which provides eight swing levels with the constant output impedance of about $50{\Omega}$, was implemented using a 70nm 1-poly 3-metal DRAM process with a 1.5V supply. The jitter reduction of 54% was measured with the swing level controlled voltage-mode driver in the absence of the destination termination at 1.6-Gb/s.

  • A novel 8 V DC power source with an external series-parallel connection of 50 Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells(DSSCs) has been proposed. One DSC has the optimized length to width ratio of $5.2{\times}2.6$ cm and an active area 8 $cm^2$($4.62{\times}1.73$ cm) which attained a conversion efficiency of 4.2%. From the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic analysis, it was found that the resistance elements related to the Pt electrode and electrolyte interface behave like that of diode and the series resistance corresponds to the sum of the other resistance elements. In addition, the TEMoo mode pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam is used to improve the incident photon to current efficiency(IPCE) of DSSC. From this result, this novel 8V-0.38A DC power source shows stable performance with an energy conversion efficiency of about 4.5% under 1 sun illumination(AM 1.5, Pin of 100 $mW/cm^2$).
