In this paper, a novel new pulse power generator based on IGBT stacks is proposed for pulse power application. Because it can generate up to 60kV pulse output voltage without any step- up transformer or pulse forming network, it has advantages of fast rising time, easiness of pulse width variation and rectangular pulse shape. Proposed scheme consists of series connected 9 power stages to generate maximum 60kV output pulse and one series resonant power inverter to charge DC capacitor voltage. Each power stages are configured as 8 series connected power cells and each power cell generates up to 850VDC pulse. Finally pulse output voltage is applied using total 72 series connected IGBTs. To reduce component for gate power supply, a simple and robust gate drive circuit is proposed. For gating signal synchronization, full bridge invertor and pulse transformer generates on-off signals of IGBT gating with gate power simultaneously and it has very good characteristics of short circuit protection.
In order to meet the increasing needs of the hybrid energy source system for electric vehicles, which demand bidirectional power flow capability with a wide-voltage-conversion range, a bidirectional three-level DC-DC converter and some control strategies for hybrid energy source electric vehicles are proposed. The proposed topology is synthesized from Buck and Boost three-level DC-DC topologies with a high voltage-gain and non-extreme duty cycles, and the bidirectional operation principle is analyzed. In addition, the inductor current ripple can be effectively reduced within the permitted duty cycle range by the coordinated control between the current fluctuation reduction and the non-extreme duty cycles. Furthermore, benefitting from duty cycle disturbance control, series-connected capacitor voltages can also be well balanced, even with the discrepant rise and fall time of power switches and the somewhat unequal capacitances of series-connected capacitors. Finally, experiment results of the bidirectional operations are given to verify the validity and feasibility of the proposed converter and control strategies. It is shown to be suitable for hybrid energy source electric vehicles.
The present paper presents a genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize social welfare and perform congestion management by optimally placing and sizing one Thyristor-Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) device in a double-sided auction market. Simulation results, with line flow constraints before and after the compensation, are compared through the Sequential Quadratic Programming SQP method, and are used to analyze the effect of TCSC on the congestion levels of modified IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus test systems. Quadratic, smooth and nonsmooth (with sine components due to valve point loading effect) generator cost curves, and quadratic smooth consumer benefit functions are considered. The main aims of the present study are the inclusion of customer benefit in the social welfare maximization and congestion management objective function, the consideration of nonsmooth generator characteristics, and the optimal locating and sizing of the TCSC using real code-based GA to guarantee fast convergence to the best solution.

Photovoltaic systems normally use a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique to continuously deliver the highest possible power to the load when variations in the insolation and temperature occur. A simple method of tracking the maximum power points (MPPs) and forcing the boost converter system to operate close to these points is presented through deriving small-signal model and transfer function of boost converter. This paper aims at modeling boost converter including equivalent series resistance of input reservoir capacitor by state-space-averaging method. In the future, properly designed controller for compensation will be constructed for maximum photovoltaic power tracking control.
Single phase of multicomponent oxide ZrTiO4 film could be prepared through surface sol-gel route simply by coating the mixture of 100 mM zirconium butoxide and titanium butoxide on $Pt/Ti/SiO_2Si(100)$ substrate, following pyro lysis at $450^{\circ}C$, and annealing it at 770 $^{\circ}C.$ The dielectric constant of the film was reduced as the film thickness decreased due to of the interfacial effects caused by layer/electrode and a few voids inside the multilayer. However, the dielectric property was independent of applied dc bias sweeps voltage (-2 to +2 V).The dielectric constant of bulk film, 31.9, estimated using series-connected capacitor model was independent of film thickness and frequency in the measurement range, but theoretical interfacial thickness, ti, was dependent on the frequency. It reached a saturated ti value, $6.9{\AA}$, at high frequency by extraction of some capacitance component formed at low frequency range. The dielectric constant of bulk ZrTiO4 pellet-shaped material was 33.7 and very stable with frequency promising as good applicable devices.
This paper introduces a low cost, high efficiency, high performance three-phase unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) by using four-switch three-phase inverters (FSTPIs) and an extra capacitor in the shunt active power filter (APF) side of the UPQC. In the proposed UPQC, both shunt and series APFs are developed by using FSTPIs so that the number of switching devices is reduced from twelve to eight devices. In addition, by inserting an additional capacitor in series with the shunt APF, the DC-link voltage in the proposed UPQC can also be greatly reduced. As a result, the system cost and power loss of the proposed UPQC is significantly minimized thanks to the use of a smaller number of power switches with a lower rating voltage without degrading the compensation performance of the UPQC. Design of passive components for the proposed UPQC to achieve a good performance is presented in detail. In addition, comparisons on power loss, overall system efficiency, compensation performance between the proposed UPQC and the traditional one are also determined in this paper. Simulation and experimental studies are performed to verify the validity of the proposed topology.
The purpose of this study is to examine the cause of damage to electrolytic capacitors and to present the heat generation mechanism in order to prevent the occurrence of similar problems. From the analysis results of electrolytic capacitors collected from accident sites, the fire causing area can be limited to the primary power supply for the initial accident. From the tests performed by applying overvoltage, surge, etc., it is thought that the fuse, varistor, etc., are not directly related to the accidents that occurred. The analysis of the characteristics using a switching regulator showed that the charge and discharge characteristics fell short of standard values. In addition, it is thought that heated electrolytic capacitors caused thermal stress to nearby resistances, elements, etc. It can be seen that the heat generation is governed by the over-ripple current, application of AC overvoltage, surge input, internal temperature increase, defective airtightness, etc. Therefore, when designing an electrolytic capacitor, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the correct polarity arrangement, appropriate voltage application, correct connection of equivalent series resistance(ESR) and equivalent series inductance(SEL), rapid charge and discharge control, sufficient margin of dielectric tangent, etc.

This paper deals with decentralized control scheme and its application to multi-machine power systems. Decentralized control scheme has several practical advantages, because power system has geographically distributed characteristics. In this paper, decentralized observer-based optimal Power System Stabilizer(PSS) and Thyristor-Controlled Series Capacitor(TCST) controller are designed and tested in WSCC 9 bus system with one TCSC installed. Simulation results show that the proposed decentralized controller has satisfactory performances comparable to the centralized controller. In addition, using modal analysis, this paper shows that the proposed decentralized controller significantly affects only one pair of eigenvalues which have high participation with each generator, while slightly affects other eigenvalues. This result indicates that the application of the decentralized control scheme to enhance power system dynamic stability via excitation control have potential advantages because each low-damped mode occurs dominantly by each decentralized subsystem.

Induction generator is always required reactive power in order to generate a rotating magnetic field as an inductive load. The reactive power must be continuously supplied to the induction generator as well as load of distribution system from the power supply side. So the power factor of the power supply side during the induction generation operation is low. Condenser is installed in order to raise the low power factor of the induction generator. Switching transients occurs when the power supply of the capacitor is turned on in order to ensure the low power factor. When using the reactor in series with the capacitor in order to reduce the influence of switching transient, it can affect the reactive power by the condenser voltage rises. In this study, we analyzed the operating characteristics for power and power factor of induction generator in accordance with the presence or absence of the application of the serial reactors for switching transients reduction of the condenser and the condenser for power factor correction.
