  • In this study, the optimal operating conditions for the dual mixed refrigerant(DMR) cycle were determined by considering the power efficiency. The DMR cycle consists of compressors, heat exchangers, seawater coolers, valves, phase separators, tees, and common headers, and the operating conditions include the equipment's flow rate, pressure, temperature, and refrigerant composition per flow. First, a mathematical model of the DMR cycle was formulated in this study by referring to the results of a past study that formulated a mathematical model of the single mixed refrigerant(SMR) cycle, which consists of compressors, heat exchangers, seawater coolers, and valves, and by considering as well the tees, phase separators, and common headers. Finally, in this study, the optimal operating conditions from the formulated mathematical model was obtained using a hybrid optimization method that consists of the genetic algorithm(GA) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP). Moreover, the required power at the obtained conditions was decreased by 1.4% compared with the corresponding value from the past relevant study of Venkatarathnam.

  • A layout of an LNG FPSO should be elaborately determined as compared with that of an onshore plant because many topside process systems are installed on the limited area; the deck of the LNG FPSO. Especially, the layout should be made as multi-deck, not single-deck and have a minimum area. In this study, a multi-floor layout for the liquefaction process, the dual mixed refrigerant(DMR) cycle, of LNG FPSO was determined by using the optimization technique. For this, an optimization problem for the multi-floor layout was mathematically formulated. The problem consists of 589 design variables representing the positions of topside process systems, 125 equality constraints and 2,315 inequality constraints representing limitations on the layout of them, and an objective function representing the total layout cost. To solve the problem, a hybrid optimization method that consists of the genetic algorithm(GA) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP) was used in this study. As a result, we can obtain a multi-floor layout for the liquefaction process of the LNG FPSO which satisfies all constraints related to limitations on the layout.

  • The performance of an acoustic transducer is determined by the effects of many design variables, and mostly the influences of these design variables are not linearly independent of each other. To achieve the optimal performance of an acoustic transducer, we must consider the cross-coupled effects of the design variables. In this study, the variation of the performances of underwater acoustic transducer in relation to its structural variables was analyzed. In addition, the new optimal design scheme of an acoustic transducer that could reflect not only individual but also all the cross-coupled effects of multiple structural variables, and could determine the detailed geometry of the transducer with great efficiency and rapidity was developed. The validation of the new optimal design scheme was verified by applying the optimal structure design of a flextensional transducer which are the most common use for high power underwater acoustic transducer. With the finite element analysis(FEA), we analyzed the variation of the resonance frequency, sound pressure, and working depth of a flextensional transducer in relation to its design variables. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the resonance frequency, sound pressure, and working depth in terms of the design variables. By applying the constrained optimization technique, Sequential Quadratic Programming Method of Phenichny and Danilin(SQP-PD), to the derived function, we designed and verified the optimal structure of the Class IV flextensional transducer that could provide the highest sound pressure level and highest working depth at a given operation frequency of 1 kHz.

  • Traffic classification plays an important role in traffic management. To traditional methods, P2P and encryption traffic may become a problem. Support Vector Machine (SVM) is a useful classification tool which is able to overcome the traditional bottleneck. The main disadvantage of SVM algorithms is that it's time-consuming to train large data set because of the quadratic programming (QP) problem. However, the useful support vectors are only a small part of the whole data. If we can discard the useless vectors before training, we are able to save time and keep accuracy. In this article, we discussed the feasibility to remove the useless vectors through a sequential method to accelerate training speed when dealing with large scale data.

  • Recently, more and more steel-deck structural system for two story roads has been adopted as a solution against traffic congestion in urban area, mainly because of fast construction, reduced self-weight, higher stiffness and efficient erection compared to that of concrete decks. The main objective is to study on the unit-elective optimal type and proportioning of a rational steel-deck system for two story roads using an optimum design program specifically developed for steel-deck systems. The objective function for the optimization is formulated as a minimum cost design problem. The behavior and design constraints are formulated based on the ASD(Allowable Stress Design) criteria of the Korean Bridge Design Code. The optimum design program developed in this study consists of two steps - the first step for the optimization of the steel box or plate girder viaducts, and the second step for the optimum design of the steel-decks with closed or open ribs. A grid model is used as a structural analysis model for the optimization of the main girder system, while the analysis of the deck system is based on the Pelican-Esslinger method. The SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming) is used as the optimization technique for the constrained optimization problem. By using a set of application examples, the rational type related to the optimized steel-deck system designs is investigated by comparing the cost effectiveness of each type. Based on the results of the investigation it may be concluded that the optimal linear box girder and deck system with closed ribs may be utilized as one of the most rational and economical viaducts in the construction of two-story roads.

  • In this paper, a decoupled dual servo (DDS) stage for ultra-precision scanning system with large working range is introduced. In general, dual servo systems consist of a fine stage for short range and a coarse stage for long range. The proposed DDS also consists of a $XY\theta$ fine stage for handling and carrying workpieces and one axis coarse stage. Its coarse stage consists of air bearing guide system and a coreless linear motor with force ripple. The fine has four voice coil motors(VCM) as its actuator. According to a VCM's nature, there are no mechanical connections between coils and magnetic circuits. Moreover, VCM doesn't have force ripples due to imperfections of commutation components of linear motor systems - currents and flux densities. However, due to the VCM's mechanical constraints the working range of the fine is about $25mm^2$. To break that hurdle, the coarse stage with linear motors is used to move the fine about 500mm. Because of the above reasons, the proposed DDS can achieve higher precision scanning than other stages with only one servo. With MATLAB's Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), the VCMs are optimally designed for the highest force under conditions and constraints such as thermal dissipations due to its coil, its size, and so on. And for their movements without any frictions, guide systems of the DDS are composed of air bearings. To get precisely their positions, a linear scale with 5nm resolution are used for the coarse stage's motion and three plane mirror laser interferometers with 5nm for the fine's $XY\theta$ motions. With them, on scanning the two stages have same trajectories. The control algorithm is named Parallel method. The embodied ultra-precision scanning system has sub 100nm following error and in-positioning stability.
