  • In structural analysis of tall buildings the traditional primary loading analysis approach that assumes all the loads are simultaneously applied to the fully built structure has been shown to be unsuitable by many researches. The construction sequential analysis that reflects the fact of the level-by-level construction of tall buildings can provide more reliable results and has been used more and more. However, too much computational cost has prevented the construction sequential analysis from its application in CAD/CAE software for building structures, since such an approach needs to deal with systematic changing of resultant stiffness matrices following level-by-level construction. This paper firstly analyzes the characteristics of assembling and triangular factorization of the stiffness matrix in the finite element model of the construction sequential analysis, then presents a fast construction sequential analysis strategy and a corresponding step-by-step active column solver by means of improving the existing skyline solver. The new strategy avoids considerably repeated calculation by only working on the latest appended and modified part of resultant stiffness matrices in each construction level. Without any simplification, the strategy guarantees accuracy while efficiency is greatly enhanced. The numerical tests show that the proposed strategy can be implemented with high efficiency in practical engineering design.

  • This study is concerned with the equilibrium bidding strategy and the optimal auction design of sequential auction with a reserve price and an entry fee. It is assumed that each bidder has a fixed reservation value and draws the reservation values of other bidders independently in the same distribution and may obtain at most one object to be sold. Under such assumptions, the sequential auction will be analyzed by the game theoretic approach. The purpose of this paper is, in the sequential auction, to find the equilibrium bidding strategy and to design the optimal auction under the equilibrium bidding strategy. The equilibrium bidding strategy and the optimal auction design are further analyzed with respect to change of the reserve price, the entry fee, and the number of bidders and objects. Specially, the auctioneer's expected revenue for each auction is obtained and analyzed.

  • Sequential pattern mining has become an essential task with broad applications. Most sequential pattern mining algorithms use a minimum support threshold to prune the combinatorial search space. This strategy provides basic pruning; however, it cannot mine correlated sequential patterns with similar support and/or weight levels. If the minimum support is low, many spurious patterns having items with different support levels are found; if the minimum support is high, meaningful sequential patterns with low support levels may be missed. We present a new algorithm, weighted interesting sequential (WIS) pattern mining based on a pattern growth method in which new measures, sequential s-confidence and w-confidence, are suggested. Using these measures, weighted interesting sequential patterns with similar levels of support and/or weight are mined. The WIS algorithm gives a balance between the measures of support and weight, and considers correlation between items within sequential patterns. A performance analysis shows that WIS is efficient and scalable in weighted sequential pattern mining.

  • This study attempts to discover a differentiated service strategy for the hotpot restaurant industry from the perspective of Chinese Generation Z customers, as well as to further explore the inner needs of Chinese Generation Z to make practical implications for discovering the method of gaining their satisfaction and loyalty. This paper employs questionnaires to collect analytical data and through a case study to produce company strategies. Smith's Marketing Ethics Sequential System Model (SMESSM) is introduced in this paper for the decision of whether the case study company Haidilao Hot Pot should make a new strategy on service based on Generation Z's consuming behavior. The findings of this study demonstrate that hotpot restaurant must differentiate their services for Generation Z from older generation customers to gain a sustainable development of the hotpot business. Proper differentiated service will not only improve Generation Z's dining experience but also reduce costs. This paper is the first to discuss differentiated service strategy in the hotpot restaurant business from the perspective of Generation Z customers. And a Chinese experience of SMESSM for practical use is introduced in this paper, which enriches the relevant implications for future research on business strategy.

  • The analysis of large data sets with hundreds of thousands observations and thousands of independent variables is a formidable computational task. A less parametric method, capable of identifying important independent variables and their interactions, is a tree structured approach to regression and classification. It gives a graphical and often illuminating way of looking at data in classification and regression problems. In this paper, we have reviewed and summarized tile methodology used to construct a tree, multiple trees and the sequential strategy for identifying active compounds in large chemical databases.

  • In computer simulation models the output from the computer code is often deterministic, i.e., running the code twice with the same values for the input variables would give the same output. It is discussed why the response surface method with polynomial approximation for the true response function is a good approximation to the computer experiments model. A sequential strategy to find the proper reduced quadratic polynomial model is illustrated with a case study in the military war game computer simulation model.

  • Purpose: A noncentral composite design method is to be developed to explore farther region for the first factorial design. A general guideline for sequential experimentation is provided. Methods: (1) A non-overlapping noncentral composite design (NNCD) is developed, in which the second factorial design shares one design point that indicates the best response value in the first factorial design. (2) Four composite designs are compared in terms of the four design evaluation criteria, which are D-, A, G, and I-optimality. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested based on the interaction effect, direction of improvement, number of factors. Results: (1) NNCD and model building method are presented, which is useful for exploring farther region from first factorial design block. (2) The performances of the four composite designs are compared. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested. Conclusion: (1) NNCD will be useful to explore farther region for the first factorial design. (2) A follow-up design strategy can be beneficial to the experimental practitioners for product and process design and improvement.

  • In this paper, we study the bargaining strategy of a distributor who sells vertically differentiated, i.e. high and low brand products. We derive and analyze the equilibrium solutions for both simultaneous and sequential bargaining games among the distributor, the high brand product manufacturer and the low brand product manufacturer. The result shows that the optimal bargaining strategy for the distributor heavily depends on the relative quality and price level of the low brand product comparing to those of the high brand product. It is also shown that, for more bargaining profit, the distributor has strong motivation to prefer a low brand product which has lower quality level per unit price.

  • Manufacturing technology for the production of high value-added fine chemical products is emphasized and getting more attention as the diversified interests of customers and the demand of high quality products are getting bigger and bigger everyday. Thus, the development of advanced batch processes, which is the preferred and most appropriate way of producing these types of products, and the related technologies are becoming more important. Therefore, high-precision batch distillation is one of the important elements in the successful manufacturing of fine chemicals, and the importance of the process operation strategy with quality assurance cannot be overemphasized. Accordingly, proposing a process structure explanation and operation strategy of such processes including batch processes and batch distillation would be of great value. We investigate optimal operation strategy and production planning of multi-purpose plants consisting of batch processes and batch distillation for the manufacturing of fine chemical products. For the short-term scheduling of a sequential multi-purpose batch plant consisting of batch distillation under MPC and UIS policy, we proposed a MILP model based on a priori time slot allocation. Also, we consider that the waste product of being produced on batch distillation is recycled to the batch distillation unit for the saving of raw materials. The developed methodology will be especially useful for the design and optimal operations of multi-purpose and multiproduct plants that is suitable for fine chemical production.
