  • Objectives : Genetic analysis and taste pattern were performed to identify species between Glycyrrhiza uralensis and G. glabra which are officially listed in Korean Pharmacopoeia IX as origin of Gamcho(g$\={a}$nc$\v{a}$o, licorice root, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Methods : Genetic analysis showed that identification between two species was done by comparing base sequence of ITS(intergenic transcribed spacer) and trnH-psbA regions from eleven Gamchoes sold in market. There was different taste pattern using by taste sensor in Glycyrrhiza uralensis and G. glabra. Results : Genetic analysis showed that six Gamchoes from China were identified as Glycyrrhiza uralensis and five Gamchoes from Uzbekistan were G. glabra. From the results of taste pattern, sourness and astringency of Glycyrrhiza uralensis from China were significantly higher than G. glabra from Uzbekistan, and aftertaste of astringency, aftertaste of umami, and saltiness of Glycyrrhiza uralensis were signicantly low as compared to G. glabra. There is no significant difference between two species in terms of bitterness, aftertaste of bitterness, and umami. Conclusions : Taken together, Glycyrrhiza uralensis from China and G. glabra from Uzbekistan were identified by taste sensor, and this technic could be applied to establishment of taste pattern marker for identification of different species located in various regions.

  • Freight travel pattern has been less studied comparing with the field of passenger travel. Nonetheless, the importance of the freight travel has been increasing in urban travel sector, and the research needs on the freight travel demand hence is increasing. The current paper aims to identify, by tons of freight trucks and cargos, the characteristics of mean travel pattern, efficiency or performance, and the characteristics of freight trip chain regarding destination location, destination type and freight type. The study analyzed the nation-wide data of freight travel behavior survey. This study intended to set the starting framework of decision-making principle in freight travel, which has already been popular in passenger travel study. Findings suggest that those characteristics are clearly distinguished among trucks and cargos of different sizes of tons. The results are expected to provide important insight to the development of relevant transportation policy measures.

  • We cloned a gene encoding acetyl xylan esterase(axeA) of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) and studied its expression pattern in Escherichia coli. The full sequence of axeA was amplified by PCR. Sequence analysis of the PCR product revealed an open reading frame of 1,008 nucleotides encoding a protein consisted of 335 amino acid residues, with a calculated molecular mass of about 38 kDa. The base sequence showed 98% homology to the same gene of Streptomyces lividans. Two different kinds of acetyl xylan esterases were produced in Escherichia coli(pLacI) by IPTG induction; their molecular weights were 38 kDa and 34 kDa, respectively. Of these, 38 kDa protein seemed to be a total protein holding N-terminal signal peptide region, whereas 34 kDa protein seemed to be a matured protein without signal peptide which was produced by peptide bond cleavage between two amino acid residues of alanine 41 and alanine 42.

  • The emphasis in genome projects has Been moving towards the sequence analysis in order to extract biological "meaning"(e.g., evolutionary history of particular molecules or their functions) from the sequence. Especially. palindromic or direct repeats that appear in a sequence have a biophysical meaning and the problem is to recognize interesting patterns and configurations of words(strings of characters) over complementary alphabets. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to identify variable length palindromic pairs(longer than a threshold), where we can allow gaps(distance between words). The algorithm is called palindrome algorithm(PA) and has O(N) time complexity. A palindromic pair consists of a hairpin structure. By composing collected palindromic pairs we build n-pair palindromic patterns. In addition, we dot some of the longest pairs in a circle to represent the structure of a DNA sequence. We run the algorithm over several selected genomes and the results of E.coli K12 are presented. There existed very long palindromic pair patterns in the genomes, which hardly occur in a random sequence.

  • With the recent development of artificial intelligence, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model that is efficient with time-series analysis is being used to increase the accuracy of predicting the inflow of dams. In this study, we predict the inflow of the Soyang River dam, using the LSTM model with the Sequence-to-Sequence (LSTM-s2s) and attention mechanism (LSTM-s2s with attention) that can further improve the LSTM performance. Hourly inflow, temperature, and precipitation data from 2013 to 2020 were used to train the model, and validate and test for evaluating the performance of the models. As a result, the LSTM-s2s with attention showed better performance than the LSTM-s2s in general as well as in predicting a peak value. Both models captured the inflow pattern during the peaks but detailed hourly variability is limitedly simulated. We conclude that the proposed LSTM-s2s with attention can improve inflow forecasting despite its limits in hourly prediction.

  • This study was designed to assess the developmental sequence of children's understanding of social interaction and to test the effects of support conditions and behavioral domains on the understanding of social interaction. The subjects were one hundred 4- to 8-year-old children. The method was a doll play situation, composed of three different support conditions. Scalogram analysis was used to test the developmental sequence, and ANOVA and paired t-test were used to test the significance of differences in stages. The results of this study evidenced a sequential pattern in the 4- to 8-year-old children's understanding of social interaction. There were also significant differences between stages in the understanding of social interaction according to support conditions and behavioral domains. Higher levels of support produced higher stages of understanding and the understanding of positive social interactions were higher than those of negative social interactions at ages 4 and 5.

  • This paper introduces a failure analysis procedure that underpins real-time fault prognosis. In the previous study, we developed a systematic eventization procedure which makes it possible to reduce the original data size into a manageable one in the form of event logs and eventually to extract failure patterns efficiently from the reduced data. Failure patterns are then extracted in the form of event sequences by sequence-mining algorithms, (e.g. FP-Tree algorithm). Extracted patterns are stored in a failure pattern library, and eventually, we use the stored failure pattern information to predict potential failures. The two practical case studies (marine diesel engine and SIRIUS-II car engine) provide empirical support for the performance of the proposed failure analysis procedure. This procedure can be easily extended for wide application fields of failure analysis such as vehicle and machine diagnostics. Furthermore, it can be applied to human health monitoring & prognosis, so that human body signals could be efficiently analyzed.

  • Environmental design pattern of the nine Small Urban Spaces at C.B.D. in City of Seoul are surveyed and analyzed for user's satisfaction and behavior under the environmental design evaluation by using Chrisopher Alexander's Pattern Language. Small Urban Spaces as a part of streetscape are formed by physical factors as well as visual environment and interacting user's behavior. Therefore, user's satisfacuion and behavior at the nine Urban Small Spaces were investigated under the further search for some possibilities of a pplication of those Pattern Languages. A pattern language has a structure of a network. It is used in sequence, going through the patterns, moving always from large patterns to smaller, always from the ones which create comes simply from the obsernation that most of the wonderful places of the city were not made by architects but by the people. It defines the limited number of arrangements of spaces that make sense in any given culture. And it actually gives us the power to generate these coherent arrangement of space. As a results, 'Plazl', 'Seats' and 'Accessibility' related design patterns are highly evaluated by Pattern Frequency, Pattern Interaction and their Composition ranks, thus reconfirm Whyte's Praise of urban Small Spaces in our inner city design environments. According to the multiple regression analysis of user's evaluation, the environmental functins related to the satisfaction were 'Plaza', 'Accessibility' and 'Paving'. According to the free response, user's prefer such visually pleasing environmental design object as 'Waterscape' and 'Setting'. In addition to, the basic needs in Urban Small Spaces are amenity facilities as bench, drinking water and shade for rest.

  • Ribosomal protein (rp) S6 is the substrate of ribosomal protein S6K (S6 kinase) and is involved in protein synthesis by mTOR/S6K/S6 signaling pathway. Some S6 cDNA have been cloned in mammals in recent years but has not been identified in the goat. To facilitate such studies, we cloned the cDNA encoding Cashmere goat (Capra hircus) S6 (GenBank accession GU131122) and then detected mRNA expression in seven tissues by real time PCR and protein expression in testis tissue by immunohistochemisty. Sequence analysis indicated that the obtained goat S6 was a 808 bp product, including a 3' untranslated region of 58 bp and an open reading frame of 750 bp which predicted a protein of 249 amino acids. The predicted amino acid sequence was highly homologous to cattle, human, mouse and rat S6. Expression analysis indicated S6 mRNA was expressed extensively in detected tissues and S6 protein was expressed in testis tissue.
