  • Human dance is difficult to learn since there is no effective way to imitate an expert's motion, a sequence of complicated body movements, without taking an actual class. In this paper, we propose a dance learning system using human depth information. In the proposed system, a set of example motions are captured from various expert dancers through a marker-free motion capture and archived into a motion database server for online dance lessons. Given the end-user devices such as tablet and kiosk PCs, a student can learn a desired motion selected from the database and send one's own motion to an instructor for online feedback. During this learning process, our system provides a posture-based motion search and multi-mode views to support the efficient exchange of motion data between the student and instructor under a networked environment. The experimental results demonstrate that our system is capable to improve the student's dance skills over a given period of time.

  • This paper proposes automatic precision approach radar (PAR) control system using digital signal to increase the safety of aircraft, and discrete event systems specification (DEVS) methodology is utilized to verify the proposed system. Traditionally, a landing aircraft is controlled by the human voice of a final approach controller. However, the voice information can be missed during transmission, and pilots may also act improperly because of incorrectness of auditory signals. The proposed system enables the stable operation of the aircraft, regardless of the pilot's capability. Communicating DEVS (C-DEVS) is used to analyze and verify the behavior of the proposed system. A composed C-DEVS atomic model has overall composed discrete state sets of models, and the state sequence acquired through full state search is utilized to verify the safeness and the liveness of a system behavior. The C-DEVS model of the proposed system shows the same behavior with the traditional PAR control system.

  • Dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) melanin is known to be present in some ascomycete fungi. To verify the type of melanin in Venturia nashicola that cause scab on pear, we investigated scytalone dehydratase (SD) gene, one of DHN melanin genes, from 11 isolates of V. nashicola from different provinces in Korea and Japan. Through PCR approach, 429 bp amplicon was produced from the 11 isolates and sequenced. All of the PCR-amplified sequences were determined as SD gene through GenBank database search. All the determined sequences were composed of an intron and two exons coding for 122 amino acids of SD. The homology of SD gene was 100% among the 11 isolates. Sequence identity of the predicted SD protein of 122 amino acids ranged 69 to 73% with other fungi. Our results proved that V. nashicola operates DHN melanin pathway.

  • Background: The patatin-related phospholipase AIII family (pPLAIIIs) genes alter cell elongation and cell wall composition in Arabidopsis and rice plant, suggesting diverse commercial purposes of the economically important medicinal ginseng plant. Herein, we show the functional characterization of a ginseng pPLAIII gene for the first time and discuss its potential applications. Methods: pPLAIIIs were identified from ginseng expressed sequence tag clones and further confirmed by search against ginseng database and polymerase chain reaction. A clone showing the highest homology with pPLAIIIβ was shown to be overexpressed in Arabidopsis using Agrobacterium. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze ginseng pPLAIIIβ expression. Phenotypes were observed using a low-vacuum scanning electron microscope. Lignin was stained using phloroglucinol and quantified using acetyl bromide. Results: The PgpPLAIIIβ transcripts were observed in all organs of 2-year-old ginseng. Overexpression of ginseng pPLAIIIβ (PgpPLAIIIβ-OE) in Arabidopsis resulted in small and stunted plants. It shortened the trichomes and decreased trichome number, indicating defects in cell polarity. Furthermore, OE lines exhibited enlarged seeds with less number per silique. The YUCCA9 gene was downregulated in the OE lines, which is reported to be associated with lignification. Accordingly, lignin was stained less in the OE lines, and the expression of two transcription factors related to lignin biosynthesis was also decreased significantly. Conclusion: Overexpression of pPLAIIIβ retarded cell elongation in all the tested organs except seeds, which were longer and thicker than those of the controls. Shorter root length is related to auxinresponsive genes, and its stunted phenotype showed decreased lignin content.

  • Marine bacteria have represented unique physiologies and products which are not discovered from terrestrial organisms. There has been great interest to utilize and develop marine bacteria in many industrial sectors. Recently, we isolated and characterized anaerobic bacteria from various marine environments in Korea to search organic acids fermenting strains. From our enrichment performed under anaerobic condition, 65 strains were isolated and identified by the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Among them, eleven strains were selected for phylogenetical and biochemical analysis. All tested strains were affiliated with Class Clostridia except one with Class Bacteroidia. Most of strains produce acetate (6 strains) with butyrate (2 strains) and/or formate (4 strains). Strain MCWD5 transformed 40% of glucose to extracellular polymeric substances. These results indicate that many novel anaerobic microorganisms which have great potential in commercial application are distributed in the marine environments of Korean Peninsula.

  • This empirical study explored characteristics that affect the usefulness of online reviews, in the China e-commerce platform, and implemented multiple regressions to find factors that significantly influence on product sales, ultimately. Till now, prior studies have continuously revealed what factor affects usefulness of online review or product sales, only in respective terms. The point of our study is that we built two-level regression models, thereby being able to comprehensively analyze these two different targets. Before plunging into running regressions, we carefully collected 192,764 online review data for 200 products extracted from the Jingdong, the second biggest e-commerce platform in China. Also, we gathered "review sentimental scores" variable from each review and used that one as a core variable in our regression model, thus we were able to implement both quantitative and qualitative research. The evidences from the two-level regression models showed that the extent to which a product is experience good positively affects both usefulness of a review and product sales, again the usefulness of a review contributes to product sales in sequence. Also, the property of experience good has interaction effect on both for two-level regression models. Our main findings highlight the importance of role of online review to business performance of e-commerce firms.

  • Despite the vast literature on the effects of root canal irrigants on the dentin characteristics, the precise effects of clinically relevant irrigation sequences remain unclear. In this review, we systematically dissect the role of different sequential irrigation approaches that are used in clinical endodontics. Using a systematic search strategy, we attempt to answer the question: 'Which irrigating sequence has the most deleterious effects on dentin structure and properties?' The effect of irrigants on the dentin composition and mechanical properties have been reviewed. A wide variety of concentrations, duration and techniques have been employed to characterize the effects of chemicals on dentin properties, thus making it impossible to draw guidelines or recommendations of irrigant sequences to be followed clinically. It was apparent that all the studied irrigation sequences potentially result in some deleterious effects on dentin such as decrease in the flexural strength, microhardness, modulus of elasticity and inorganic content and organic-inorganic ratio of the dentin. However, the literature still lacks comprehensive investigations to compare the deleterious effect of different irrigation sequences, using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Such investigations are essential to make clinical recommendations and strategize efforts to minimize chemically-induced damage to dentin characteristics.

  • In this paper, we propose a smoker recognition algorithm, detecting smokers in a video sequence in order to prevent fire accidents. We use description-based method in hierarchical approaches to recognize smoker's activity, the algorithm consists of background subtraction, object detection, event search, event judgement. Background subtraction generates slow-motion and fast-motion foreground image from input image using Gaussian mixture model with two different learning-rate. Then, it extracts object locations in the slow-motion image using chain-rule based contour detection. For each object, face is detected by using Haar-like feature and smoke is detected by reflecting frequency and direction of smoke in fast-motion foreground. Hand movements are detected by motion estimation. The algorithm examines the features in a certain interval and infers that whether the object is a smoker. It robustly can detect a smoker among different objects while achieving real-time performance.

  • Motion Estimation (ME) has been developed to remove redundant data contained in a sequence of image. And ME is an important part of video encoding systems, since it can significantly affect the qualify of an encoded sequences. Generally, ME consists of two stages, the integer pixel motion estimation and the half pixel motion estimation. Many methods have been developed to reduce the computational complexity at the integer pixel motion estimation. However, the studies are needed at the half pixel motion estimation to reduce the complexity. In this paper, a method based on the correlations between integer pixel motion vectors and half pixel motion vectors is proposed for the half pixel motion estimation. The proposed method has less computational complexity than the full half pixel search method (FHSM) that needs the bilinear interpolation of half pixels and examines nine half pixel points to the find the half pixel motion vector. Experimental results show that the speedup improvement of the proposed method over FHSM can be up to $2.5\~80$ times faster and the image quality degradation is about to $0.07\~0.69(dB)$.
