  • Bactericidal activity of normal and cirrhotic patients' sera against Vibrio vulnificus was investigated and compared each other as a part of the pathogenesis study of V. vulnificus septicemia. Bactericidal activity of serum against V. vulnificus was complement-dependent and the alternative pathway played the major role. V. vulnificus strains CDC A1402 and ATCC 27562 appeared serum-sensitive, and CDC C7184, clinical isolate CNUH1 and ATCC 29307 were serum-resistant. When bactericidal activity of cirrhotic sera against serum-sensitive CDC A1402 and serum-resistant CDC C7184 was compared with that of normal sera. showed slightly poorer bactericidal activity than normal sera. Especially in the case of serum-resistant CDC C7184 strain, cirrhotic sera showed statistically significant decrease(p<0.05) in their bactericidal activity.

  • Esopkageal rupture is one of the rarest disease. Mackler described that esophageal rupture was differentiated from esophageal perforation, the perforation is produced by esophagoscopy, and continuous erosion, such as esophagitis, gastric reflux, hiatal hernia and malignant neoplasm of the esophagus, the rupture is occurred by severe vomiting, cough and strong positive pressure into the esophageal lumen. Since,at first Boerhaave reported the esophageal rupture due to severe vomiting in 1742, several case reports of esophageal rupture have been in the literatures. Authors reported a case of the esophageal rupture due to explosion of gasoline in 50 year old female. The rupture occurred a longitudinal rent on the left posterolateral aspect of lower one third of esophagus and accompanied wlth second degree burn on the entire face and neck. The treatment consists of immediate thoracotomy in order to drainage of pyothorax and gastrostomy for nutritional problem, but patient expired because of septicemia probably due to uncontrollable empyema of thorax on 45th admitted day.

  • Asian Americans is a minority population contributing approximately 4% to the total population of the United States, however it is one of the fastest growing populations. Although Asian Americans as a group have socioeconomic profiles that are similar to white Americans, significant variations exists within and across Asian ethnic groups. The top ten leading causes of death for Asian Americans includes cancer, heart diseases, stroke, unintentional injuries, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory disease, suicide, nephritis, and septicemia. The prevalence of obesity is lower among Asian Americans, however this should be taken with considerations specific to Asians. High salt and low calcium consumption seem to be dietary risk factors for Asian Americans, although dietary patterns are changing with acculturation. Factors affecting dietary patterns are discussed in this paper. A proactive nutrition education approach for Asian Americans should be promoting maintaining 'healthy' aspects of ethnic diets and adopting 'healthy' American diets. Collaboration with nutrition educators in Asian countries would be helpful to overcome limited resources available for researching and developing nutrition education messages and materials for Asian Americans. • The effect of the extracellular protease of Salmonella schottmulleri on human serum constituents such as immunoglobulins, hemoglobin and lysozyme and tissue constituents such as fibronectin and collagens was investigated. This protease degraded collagens (type I and III), fibronectin and serum proteins such as human hemoglobin and lysozyme. Bovine serum albumin was degraded slightly. Thus, the present study suggested the possibility that this protease is not only played an important role in invasion of S. schottmulleri by degrading the constituent proteins such as collagens and fibronectin but also induced complications observed in septicemia and chronic infections by degrading the serum proteins. This protease is also capable of degrading defence-oriented humoral proteins, immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM). Furthermore, it is toxic to HEp-2 cells. These findings clarified the possible role of Salmonella protease as a virulence factor in the pathogenesis of Salmonella infections.

  • A castrated male, 9-year-old Yorkshire terrier was presented with a depression and bilateral hind limbs lameness. On physical examinations, upper motor neuron signs and stiffness of the hind limbs, back pain and progressive paresis were identified. Marked periosteal new bone formations and lysis include the first lumbar vertebra to the sacrum, bilateral iliums acetabulums and bilateral femoral heads were observed in survey radiographs. After death with septicemia suspected, renal infarction and the 5th vertebral osteomyelitis include pelvic periostitis were diagnosed in histological examination.

  • A gingival mass was detected from a 1-year-old female Great Dane dog. After surgical removal, the lesions recurred in 2 weeks and died of septicemia. Characteristic histologic features were large numbers of multinucleated giant cells which were connected with capillary vessels. Neovascularization was prominent with mononuclear and polynuclear cell infiltration. Overall features of these lesions except for giant cell infiltration were similar to granuloma. From these results, a gingival mass excised from a dog was diagnosed to be a peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG). This is the first report of canine subcutaneous PGCG in Korea.

  • Streptococcus suis has been identified as a major cause of contagious disease in pigs Ithas been isolated worldwide from pigs suffering from meningitis, bronchopneumonia, polyserositis, polyarthritis and septicemia. Two hundred and fifty-five lung samples of slaughter pigs with gross lung lesions were collected from Jan. to Dec. 1995 in southern Chonnam area. Isolation of S suis were tested by biochemical, serological methods and antimicrobial susceptibility. The results were summerrized as follows ; 1. S suis was Isolated from 30 of 254 pneumonic lungs, 14 Isolates were isolated only, 12 were isolated with p. multocida and 4 were isolated with unidentified Gram positive cocci. 2. In biochemical characteristics studies, all isolates were not grown in 6.5% NaCl medium, and most isolates utilized L-leucine-2-naphtylamide and trehalose, didn't utilize sorbitol, ribose and L-arabinose. 3. In slide agglutination test, 6(20%) Isolates were classified as serotype 2, 4(13.3%) isolates were as serotype l/2, 16, 2 and 2(6.6%) were as serotype 1, 4, 13. 4. S suis isolates showed marked susceptibility to amoxicillin, oxacillin, cephalothin and cepoferazone and high resistance to kanamycin, streptomycin, tetracycline and erythromycin.

  • Aeromonas hydrophilia infection was diagnosed in captive Jackass penguins (Spheniscus demersus). Seven Jackass penguins showed clinical signs including depression and anorexia with greenish vomiting, but four penguins were died although extensive treatment was carried out. At necropsy, the penguins appeared to have hemorrhage and catarrhal inflammation of the small and large intestines and severe enlargement of the right hepatic lobe, elongation of the gall bladder and pyloric ulceration of the stomach. The ovaries observed atrophy and congestion. Microscopically, there were congestion, fat droplet within the cytoplasm of the hepatic cell, infiltration of lymphocytes in the stomach, vilous detachment and destroyed glandular epithelium in the small and large intestines. Aeromonas hydrophilia was isolated from the liver and small intestines. This case is the first report of an occurrence of Aeromonas hydrophilia infection at Jackass penguins in Korea.

  • A DNA chip that rapidly and accurately detects the viral genes in rhabdovirus-infected fish was developed. The N, Ml, and G proteins of three rhabdovirus strains, infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), and flounder rhabdovirus (HIRRV), were selected for use as probes. The sequences of the corresponding genes were obtained, and probes were prepared by PCR using specific primer sets. The specificity of the probes was confirmed by cross PCR. The prepared probes were spotted on poly-L-lysine- or aminosilane-coated glass slides and hybridized with target DNA under several different conditions in order to determine the optimal hybridization temperature, glass-slide coating, and target cDNA concentration.
