  • A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was employed to investigate the effects of blowing jet on the flow characteristics over stationary and pitch-oscillating airfoils. The Reynolds number was $7.84{\times}10^5$ based on the chord length. It was found that for stationary airfoil cases, continuous and pulsating blowing jets successfully reduced separated wake region at high angles of attack. A comparison study of two different types of jet blowing indicated that pulsating jet is more effective than continuous jet for flow separation control. Pulsating leading-edge blowing postpones flow separation and increased stall angle of attack by $2^{\circ}{\sim}3^{\circ}$. For pitch-oscillating airfoil cases, the PIV results showed that blowing jet efficiently delays the separation onset point during pitch-up stroke, whereas it does not prevent flow separation during pitch-down stroke, even at angles of attack smaller than static ones.

  • A simple and quick separation technique for selenite in natural water was developed using $TiO_2$@$SiO_2/Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles. For the synthesis of nanoparticles, a polymer-assisted sol-gel method using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) was developed to control particle dispersion in the synthetic procedure. In addition, titanium butoxide (TBT) precursor, instead of the typical titanium tetra isopropoxide, was used for the formation of the $TiO_2$ shell. The synthesized nanoparticles were used to separate selenite ($Se^{4+}$) in the presence of $Se^{6+}$ or selenium anions for the photocatalytic reduction to $Se^0$ atom on the $TiO_2$ shell, followed by magnetic separation using $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticles. The reduction efficiency of the photocatalytic reaction was 81.4% at a UV power of 6W for 3 h with a dark adsorption of 17.5% to the nanoparticles, as determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The developed separation method can be used for the speciation and preconcentration of selenium cations in environmental and biological analysis.

  • Clinical myography(EMG) is a technique for diagnosing neuromuscular disorders by analyzing the electrical signal that can be records by needle electrode during a muscular contraction. The EMG signal arises from electrical discharges that accompany the generation of force by groups of muscular fiber, and the analysis of EMG signal provides symptoms that can distinguish disorder of mLecle from disor- ders of nerve. One of the methods for analysis of EMG signal is to separate the individual discharge-the motor unit action potentials(MVAPS) - from EMG signal. But we can only observe the EMG signal that is a superimposed version of time delayed MUAPS. To obtain the information about MUAP(, i.e., position, firing number, magnitude etc), first of all, a method that can separate each MUAP from the EMG signal must be developed Although the methods for MUAP separation have been proposed by many researcherl they have required heavy computational burden. In this paper, we proposed a new method that has less computational burden and performs more reliable separation of superimposed EMG signal using wavelet filter which has multiresolution analysis as major property. As a result, we develope the separation algorithm of superimposed EMG signal which has less computational burden than any other researchers and exacutes exact separation process. The performance of this method has been discussed in the automatic resolving procedure which is neccessary to identify every firing of every motor unit from the EMG pattern.

  • The problem of blind signal separation of independent sources consist in retrieving the source from the observation of unknown mixtures of unknown sources. In this paper, we propose a technique for blind signal separation that can extract original signals from their non-stationary mixtures observed in a ordinary room. The proposed method implements blind signal separation by minimizing a non-negative cost function that achieves the minimum when the second-order cross-correlation value of the observed signals becomes zero. The validity of the proposed method has been verified by a computer simulation and experiment that extracts two source signals from their mixtures observed in a normal room.

  • The contact problem for an elastic layer resting on an elastic half plane is considered according to the theory of elasticity with integral transformation technique. External loads P and Q are transmitted to the layer by means of two dissimilar rigid flat punches. Widths of punches are different and the thickness of the layer is h. All surfaces are frictionless and it is assumed that the layer is subjected to uniform vertical body force due to effect of gravity. The contact along the interface between elastic layer and half plane will be continuous, if the value of load factor, ${\lambda}$, is less than a critical value, ${\lambda}_{cr}$. However, if tensile tractions are not allowed on the interface, for ${\lambda}$ > ${\lambda}_{cr}$ the layer separates from the interface along a certain finite region. First the continuous contact problem is reduced to singular integral equations and solved numerically using appropriate Gauss-Chebyshev integration formulas. Initial separation loads, ${\lambda}_{cr}$, initial separation points, $x_{cr}$, are determined. Also the required distance between the punches to avoid any separation between the punches and the layer is studied and the limit distance between punches that ends interaction of punches, is investigated. Then discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of singular integral equations. The numerical results for initial and end points of the separation region, displacements of the region and the contact stress distribution along the interface between elastic layer and half plane is determined for various dimensionless quantities.

  • The primary purposes in this paper are to analyze the class separation of features in handwritten numeral recognition and to make use of the results in feature selection. Using the Parzen window technique, we compute the class distributions and define the class separation to be the overlapping distance of two class distributions. The dimension of a feature vector is reduced by removing the void or redundant feature cells based on the class separation information. The experiments have been performed on the CENPARMI handwritten numeral database, and partial classification and full classification have been tested. The results show that the class separation is very effective for the feature selection in the 10-class handwritten numeral recognition problem since we could reduce the dimension of the original 256-dimensional feature vector by 22%.

  • Separation of cesium chloride (CsCl) and strontium chloride ($SrCl_2$) from the lithium chloride-potassium chloride (LiCl-KCl) salt was studied using a melt crystallization process similar to the reverse vertical Bridgeman growth technique. A ternary $SrCl_2-LiCl-KCl$ salt was explored at similar growth rates (1.8-5 mm/h) and compared with CsCl ternary results to identify similarities. Quaternary experiments were also conducted and compared with the ternary cases to identify trends and possible limitations to the separations process. In the ternary case, as much as 68% of the total salt could be recycled per batch process. In the quaternary experiments, separation of Cs and Sr was nearly identical at the slower rates; however, as the growth rate increased, $SrCl_2$ separated more easily than CsCl. The quaternary results show less separation and rate dependence than in both ternary cases. As an estimated result, only 51% of the total salt could be recycled per batch. Furthermore, two models have been explored to further understand the growth process and separation. A comparison of the experimental and modeling results reveals that the nonmixed model fits reasonably well with the ternary and quaternary data sets. A dimensional analysis was performed and a correlation was identified to semipredict the segregation coefficient.

  • Conjoined twins are rare, and each set of conjoined twins has a unique conjoined anatomy. It is necessary to perform separation to increase the chance of patient survival. Tissue expansion is an advanced technique for providing sufficient soft tissue and skin for wound closure. We report the successful application of rapid tissue expansion in 10-month-old xipho-omphalopagus conjoined twins in Vietnam. A tissue expander was placed on the anterior body between the sternum and umbilicus with a baseline of 70 mL sterile saline (0.9% NaCl). The first injection into the tissue expander began on the 6th day after expander insertion, and injections continued every 2 days with approximately 30-70 mL per injection according to the expansion of the skin. The expander reached 335 mL after six injections and within 10 days. In order to prepare for surgical separation, expansion was completed on the 15th day after insertion. The expanded skin area was estimated to be 180 cm2, which was sufficient to cover both patients' skin deficiencies. The twins presented for surgical separation 6 days following the completion of tissue expansion. Both babies were discharged in good health 1 month after separation.

  • Accurate quantitative evaluation of baseflow contribution to streamflow is imperative to address seasonal drought vulnerability, flood occurrence and groundwater management concerns for efficient and sustainable water resources management in watersheds. Several baseflow separation algorithms using recursive filters, graphical method and tracer or chemical balance have been developed but resulting baseflow outputs always show wide variations, thereby making it hard to determine best separation technique. Therefore, the current global shift towards implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in water resources is employed to compare the performance of deep learning models with conventional hydrograph separation techniques to quantify baseflow contribution to streamflow of Piney River watershed, Tennessee from 2001-2021. Streamflow values are obtained from the USGS station 03602500 and modeled to generate values of Baseflow Index (BI) using Web-based Hydrograph Analysis (WHAT) model. Annual and seasonal baseflow outputs from the traditional separation techniques are compared with results of Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and simple Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) models. The GRU model gave optimal BFI values during the four seasons with average NSE = 0.98, KGE = 0.97, r = 0.89 and future baseflow volumes are predicted. AI offers easier and more accurate approach to groundwater management and surface runoff modeling to create effective water policy frameworks for disaster management.

  • This paper deals with the separation of MTBE-methanol mixtures using crosslinked Poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) membranes with sulfur-succinic acid(SSA) as a crosslinking agent by pervaporation and vapor permeation technique. The operating temperatures, methanol concentration in feed mixtures, and SSA concentrations in PVA membranes were varied to investigate the separation performance of PVA/SSA membranes and the optimum separation characteristics by pervaporation and vapor permeation. And also, for PVA/SSA membranes, the swelling measurements were carried out to study the transport phenomena. The swelling measurements were carried out for pure MTBE and methanol, and MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures using PVA/SSA membranes with varying SSA compositions. There are two factors of the membrane network and the hydrogen bonding. In pervaporation separation was also carried out for MTBE/methanol=90/10, 80/20 mixtures at various temperatures. The sulfuric acid group in SSA took an important role in the membrane performance. The crosslinking effect might be over the hydrogen bonding effect due to the sulfuric acid group at 3 and 5% SSA membranes, and this two factors act vice versa on 7% SSA membrane. In this case, the 5% SSA membrane shows the highest separation factor of 2,095 with the flux of 12.79g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$ which this mixtures show near the azeotopic composition. Compared to pervaporation, vapor permeation showed less flux and similar separation factor. In this case, the flux decreased significantly because of compact structure and the effect of hydrogen bonding. In vapor permeation, density or concentration of methanol in vaporous feed is lower than that of methanol in liquid feed, as a result, the hydrogen bonding portion between the solvent and the hydroxyl group in PVA is reduced in vapor permeation. In this case, the 7% SSA membranes shows the highest separation factor of 2,187 with the flux of 4.84g/㎡$.$hr for MTBE/methanol=80/20 mixtures at 30$^{\circ}C$.
