Purpose: Particle separation in solution is one of important process in a unit operation as well as in an extract preparation for biosensors. Contrary to centrifuge-type of mesh-type filter, using an ultrasonic standing wave make the filtering process continuous and free from maintenance. It is needed to investigate the characteristics of particle movement in the ultrasonic standing wave field. Methods: Through the computer simulation the effects of major design and driving parameters on the alignment characteristics of particles were investigated, and a cylindrical chamber with up-stream flow type was devised using two circular-shape PZTs on both sides of the chamber, one for transmitting ultrasonic wave and the other for just reflecting it. Then, the system performance was experimentally investigated as well. Results: The speed of a particle to reach pressure-node plane increased as the acoustic pressure and size of particle increased. The maximum allowable up-stream flow rate could be calculated as well. As expected, exact numbers of pressure-node planes were well formed at specific locations according to the wavelength of ultrasonic wave. As the driving frequency of PZT got close to its resonance frequency, the bands of particles were observed clearer, which meant the particles were trapped into narrower space. Higher excitation voltages to the PZT produced a greater acoustic force with which to trap particles in the pressure-node planes, so that the particles gathered could move upwards without disturbing their alignments even at a higher inlet flow rate. Conclusions: This research showed the feasibility of particle separation in solution in the continuous way by an ultrasonic standing wave. Further study is needed to develop a device to collect or harvest those separated particles.

The clamping characteristics of segmented nuts in pyrotechnic separation nut are investigated using finite element analysis. When the segmented nuts are used to clamp objects, a constraint cylinder is necessary to prevent the segmented nuts from spreading out to the radial direction. During the manufacturing process, a clearance is usually introduced between the outer diameter of the segmented nuts and the inner diameter of the constraint cylinder. Therefore to find out the effect of the clearance, proper finite element modeling method is suggested to describe the clamping procedure appropriately. In addition, finite element analysis with the clearance of 0.00, 0.03, 0.06, and 0.10 mm are performed. From the analysis results, the clamping characteristics of segmented nuts are investigated according to the clearance, and several factors which should be considered to design a reliable pyrotechnic separation nut are figured out.
This study was attempted to investigate the pneumatic separation on separating unit of a combine harvester. The aerodynamic characteristics of threshed materials were analyzed by experiments. The air velocity distribution within the separation chamber was measured for various speeds of the winnower and suction fans to find out the operational and design conditions of the separating unit which would serve for reducing the grain loss from chaff outlet. The results of study arc summarized as follows: 1. Based on the separation curve of threshed materials analyzed, it was shown that three different kind. of materials-kernels, straw chaff, and leaf chaff were as a whole able to be separated pneumatically, regardless of varieties. However, a small amount of the separation grain loss may be expected to occur if the complete separation between kernels and straw chaff would be undertaken because some portion of their separation curve were overlapping. 2. The analysis of air velocity distribution showed that the separation chamber may be divided into two regions, the discharging and separating. The air velocity of the discharging region was 5-15 m/s and that of the separating region 2-5 m/s. 3. The air movement of the separation chamber may be a turbulence flow, being its speed became greater as it moves from the left to the right section of the separation chamber. The equi-speed line. of air flow had a steep gradient in between the discharging and the separation regions. The air velocity in the discharging region was much higher than the terminal velocity of kernels, because of which those kernels appearing in the region could be possibly exhausted as the grain loss from the chaff outlet. 4. The motion trajectory of threshed material in the separating region was dominantly affected by the winnower fan, on the other hand, its motion in the discharging region was affected by suction fan. 5. The grain loss from the chaff outlet was affected greatly by the winnower fan and the trace of kernel movement. It was observed that the optimum working speed to give minimum grain loss from chaff outlet for the combine tested should be maintained at 950~1,150 rpm for the winnower fan and 1,850 rpm for the suction fan. 6. It was shown that a large portion of grain loss from chaff outlet may occur when the kernels may bump against a portion of separation chamber wall and those kernels thus scattered into the discharging region were sucked by the suction fan. It was accordingly recommended that a new design of the wall of separation chamber so as to bump down kernels may be necessary to reduce grain loss from the chaff outlet.

Flow separation of recirculation zone by increasing of flow and change of its direction at confluence results in backwater due to conveyance reduction. The hydraulic characteristics of flow separation are analysed by experimental results of flow ratios of tributary and main streams and approaching angles. The boundary of flow separation by dimensionless length and width is defined by the streamline of zero and this definition agrees well to the existing investigation. Because flow separation doesn't appear in small flow ratio and approaching angle of $30^{\circ}$, the equation of flow separation with flow ratio and approaching angle is provided. In flow separation consideration and comparing with previous results, the existing equations of dimensionless length and width ratios by function of approaching angle, flow ratio, and downstream Froude number are modified and also contraction coefficient and shape factor are analysed. Dimensionless length and width ratios are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle. In analysis of water surface profiles, the backwater effects are proportional to the flow ratio and approaching angle and the magnitude at outside wall is greater than that of inside wall of main stream. The length, $X_l$ from the beginning of confluence to downstream of uniform flow, where the depth is equal to uniform depth, is characterized by width of stream, flow ratio, approaching angle, and contraction coefficient. The ratios between maximum water depth by backwater and minimum depth at separation are analysed.

In order to reduce the download around Smart UAV(SUAV) at hovering and transition mode, flow control using synthetic jet has been performed. Many of the complex tilt rotor flow features are captured including wing leading and trailing edge separation, and the large region of separated flow beneath the wing. First, in order to control the trailing edge separation, synthetic jet is located at 30, 95% of flap chord length. The flow control using synthetic jet on flap shows that stall characteristics depending on several mode can be improved through separation vortices resizing. Also, a flap jet and a 0.01c jet which control the separation efficiently are applied at the same time at each test case because controlling the leading edge separation is essential for download reduction. As a result, time averaged download is reduced about 18% comparing with no control case at hovering mode and 48% at transition mode. These research results show that if flow control using leading edge jet and trailing edge jet is used effectively to the SUAV in overall flight mode, flight performance and stability can be improved.
In this comparison of the relative effects of children's separation from their parents, socio-emotional adjustment was assessed by emotional and behavioral problems and emotional intelligence. Subjects were 502 elementary school children separated from their parents(162 in Yanbian and 340 in Korea) and their caregivers. Data analysis was by frequency, t-test, and multiple regression controlled by gender and grade in school. Caregivers living with children and their parenting efficacy were significant variables for the development of socio-emotional adjustment in Korean-Chinese children in Yanbian, but reasons for parent-child separation, caregivers' psychological and behavioral characteristics, and SES were significant variables for children in Korea. Implications are that regional differences should be considered in understanding and supporting the development of children's socio-emotional adjustment.
A simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography system is a powerful tool for preparative scale separation, which can be applied to the separation of chiral compound. We have de-signed our own lab-scale SMB chromatography using 5 HPLC pumps, 6 stainless steel columns and 4 multi-position valves, to separate a racemic mixture of ketoprofen in to its enantiomers. Our design has the characteristics of the low cost for assembly for the SMB chromatography and easy repair of the unit, which differs from the designs suggested by other investigators. It is possible for the flow path through each column to be independently changed by computer control, using 4 multi-position rotary valves and 5 HPLC solvent delivery pumps. In order to prove the operability of our SMB system, attempts were made to separate the (S)-ketoprofen enantiomer from a ketoprofen racemic mixture. The operating parameters of the SMB chromatography were calculated for ketoprofen separation from a batch chromatography experiment as well as by the triangle theory. With a feed concentration of 1 mg/mL, (S)-ketoprofen was obtained with a purity of 96% under the calculated operating conditions.
Electro-flotation (EF) was applied to a sequencing batch reactor process (SBR) in order to enhance solids-liquid separation. Solids-liquid separation was good enough in the SBR coupled with EF (EF-SBR) and it was possible to maintain the concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) high in the EF-SBR. Under moderate organic loading condition (COD loading rate: 6 g/day), control SBR (C-SBR) showed similar treatment efficiencies with the EF-SBR. Under high organic loading condition (COD loading rate: 9.6 g/day), the solids-liquid separation in the C-SBR was deteriorated due to proliferation of filamentous bulking organisms at high F/M ratio. However, the EF-SBR was operated stably and with the high MLSS concentration (above 4,000 mg/L) regardless of the organic loading conditions during overall operating period leading to the satisfactory effluent quality. Gas production rate of the electrodes was gradually decreased because of anodic corrosion and scale build-up at the surface of cathode. However it could be partially overcome by use of corrosion-proof electrode material (SUS-316 L) and by periodic current switching between the electrodes.

1. INTRODUCTION : Polyimides containing siloxane moiety(poly(imide siloxane), or polysiloxaneimide) have been synthesized because of their some merits over polyimide itseft. Polyimides have excellent thermal and mechanical properties but their poor solubility and processibility in their fullly imidized form give disadvantages in applications. Incorporation of siloxane units make it possible to increase solubility and processibility, and also impart impact resistance, low moisture uptake, low dielectric constant, thermo-oxidative resistance, good adhesion properties to substrate and etc.. Incorporation methods of siloxane groups into the polyimide was mainly copolymerization or terpolymerization between oligomeric dimethylsiloxane and aromatic dianhydride. A few methods of introducing siloxane units in functional groups of polyimide was reported. In our laboratory poly(amideimide siloxane) and poly(imide siloxane) were prepared and the study about their thermal kinetics was performed. In separation membrane area, polysiloxaneimides was utilized in pervaporation and gas separation. Polyimides in gas separation show high selectivity and very low permeability, and introduction of siloxane segments increase permeability with low decrease in selectivity. We aimed to introduce silicone segments into poly(amic acid) state and synthesize polymer partially imidized, and also show the gas separation characteristics of the synthesized polymer.
The characteristics of turbulent boundary layers over hilly terrain depend strongly on the hill slope and upstream condition, especially inflow turbulence. Numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the neutrally stratified turbulent boundary layer over two-dimensional hills. Two kinds of hill shape, a steep one with stable separation and a low one without stable separation, two kinds of inflow condition, laminar turbulent, are considered. An auxiliary simulation, based on the local differential quadrature method and recycling technique, is performed to simulate the inflow turbulence be imposed at inlet boundary of the turbulent inflow, which preserves very well in the computational domain. A large separation bubble is established on the leeside of the steep hill with laminar inflow, while reattachment point moves upstream under turbulent inflow condition. There is stable separation on the side of low hill with laminar inflow, whilw not turbulent inflow. Besides increase of turbulence intensity, inflow can efficiently enhance the speedup around hills. So in practice, it is unreasonable to study wind flow over hilly terrain without considering inflow turbulence.
