This study was examined occurrence of bisphenol A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP) in waterworks system of Seoul, Korea from September 2002 to December 2003. The levels of BPA and NP in Han-river and its tributaries were as followed: Paldang-dam, ND(not detected)${\sim}0.033{\mu}g/L$ and $ND{\sim}0.823{\mu}g/L$; Kyungahn-creek, $ND{\sim}0.659{\mu}g/L$ and $ND{\sim}3.827{\mu}g/L$; Whangsuk-creek, $ND{\sim}0.528{\mu}g/L$ and $ND{\sim}12.724{\mu}g/L$, respectively. In water of 6 intake-station, the contents of NP and BPA were detected $0.122{\sim}2.724{\mu}g/L$, and $ND{\sim}0.260{\mu}g/L$, respectively. In the finished- and tap-water of three drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) around Whangsuk-creek, BPA was not detected in all samples, while NP was in ppt levels in whole. Through the process of DWTP, also, the removal ratio of NP was above 80% in all this. Therefore, this result was suggested that levels of BPA and NP in waterworks system depended on non-point contaminants and swage treatment plants in the Han-river shed.

The $PM_{10}$ concentrations in the underground should be monitored for the health of commuters on the underground subway system. Seoul Metro and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation are measuring several air pollutants regularly. As for the measurement of $PM_{10}$ concentrations, instruments based on $\beta$-ray absorption method and gravimetric methods are being used. But the instruments using gravimetric method give us 20-hour-average data and the $\beta$-ray instruments can measure the $PM_{10}$ concentration every one hour. In order to keep the $PM_{10}$ concentrations under a healthy condition, the air quality of the underground platform and tunnels should be monitored and controlled continuously. The $PM_{10}$ instruments using light scattering method can measure the $PM_{10}$ concentrations every less than one minute. However, the reliability of the instruments using light scattering method is still not proved. The purpose of this work is to study the reliability of the instruments using light scattering method to measure the $PM_{10}$ concentrations continuously in the underground platforms. One instrument using $\beta$-ray absorption method and two different instruments using light scattering method (LSM1, LSM2) were placed at the platform of the Jegi station of Seoul metro line Number 1 for 10 days. The correlation between the $\beta$-ray instrument and the LSM2 ($r^2$=0.732) was higher than that between the $\beta$-ray instrument and the LSM1 ($r^2$=0.393). Thus the LSM2 was chosen for further analysis. Three different regression analysis methods were tested: Linear regression analysis, Nonlinear regression analysis and Orthogonal regression analysis. When the instruments using light scattering method were used, the data measured these instruments have to be converted to actual $PM_{10}$ concentrations using some factors. With these analyses, the factors could be calculated successfully as linear and nonlinear forms with respect to the data. And the orthogonal regression analysis was performed better than the ordinary least squares method by 28.45% reduction of RMSE. These findings propose that the instruments using light scattering method light scattering method can be used to measure and control the $PM_{10}$ concentrations of the underground subway stations.
In order to identify the origin and nature of the spilled oil in the potential source, we analyzed the concentrations of specific fuel constituents in fuel standard and environmental samples. The ratios of pristane/phytane are virtually unaltered because these compounds have the same bolatility in environmental samples. These were useful to identify the source of the fuel oil and to assess the effect of microbial degradation and weathering of the fuel oil. We analyzed the ratios of pristane/phytane in neat white kerosene, boiler kerosene, JP-8 and diesel products from L and S gas station. The ratios of pristane/phytane in L-white kerosene and JP-8 was 3.10 $\pm$0.03 and 1.77 $\pm$ 0.01, respectively. Otherwise, the ratios of pristane/phytane in water phase after distribution of fuel oil and water was 2.97 $\pm$0.02 in case of white kerosene and 1.65 $\pm$ 0.02 in case of JP-8. It is apparent from the results that the ratios of pristane/phytane were as product-specific, especially between kerosene and JP-8, and therefore, can also be used for fuel type identification in free products and groundwater samples which were collected in monitoring wells.

In this study, quality characteristics of yogurt supplemented with Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract were examined. The pH of the yogurt ranged from 4.40 to 4.45 and the titratable acidity ranged from 0.96% to 0.98%. The viscosity tended to decrease with the addition of the Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract, but did not affect stability during storage. In the range of 0.1% to 0.3%, lactic acid bacteria were present in the range of 1.9×109 to 3.2×109 CFU/mL. The decursin content in yogurt was quantitatively analyzed, depending on the addition of 0.1% to 0.3% of Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract and was found to be 0.26 ㎍/g, 15.23 ㎍/g, and 23.57 ㎍/g respectively. Organic acid showed the highest generation of lactic acid. The antioxidant properties of yogurt were shown to increase with the addition of the Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract. The sensory score of yogurt supplemented with 0.1% of the Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract was highly valued, at a level similar to that of plain yogurt. Yogurt supplemented with 0.2% of the extract was rated above the normal score of 6.31 to 6.50. As shown by the results, the optimal concentration of Angelica gigas Nakai leaf extract for addition to yogurt was within 0.2%.

Indoor radon($^{222}Rn$) concentrations of subway stations in Seoul area were measured to survey the environmental indoor radon levels and to identify sources of radon. The radon concentration of indoor air by method of long-term measuring with a-track detector were surveyed at 232 subway stations from 1998 to 2004. And the radon concentration in ground-water was measured with a method of alpha particle counting. To trace main source of radon, 8 out of 232 stations were selected and their radon concentrations in tunnel and on platform were analyzed. Total geometric mean and arithmetic mean of radon concentrations in all stations from 1998 to 2004 were $1.40{\pm}1.94pCi/L,\;1.65{\pm}1.07$ respectively. Geometric means of radon concentrations on platform and concourse were $1.54{\pm}1.96pCi/L,\;1.23{\pm}1.88pCi/L$ respectively, with higher concentration at the platform than at the concourse. The geological structure was significantly correlated to the indoor radon concentration in subway stations region. Radon concentrations of adjacent tunnel and ground-water of subway station was significantly correlated to the indoor radon concentration in subway stations. And There was a significant difference in radon concentration, depending on the depth levels in platform of subway stations(p<0.05).
To sustainably monitor air pollution in Seoul, the number of Air Pollution Monitoring Station has been gradually increased by Korea's Ministry of Environment. Although particulate matters(PM), one of the pollutants measured at the stations, have an significant influence on human body, the concentration of PM in Korea came in second among 35 OECD member countries. In this study, using the data of PM concentration from the stations, distribution maps of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations over Seoul were generated, and spatial factors potentially related to PM distribution were investigated. Based on a circumscribed hexagon about a circle in radius of 500 meters created as a basic unit, Seoul was sectionalized and PM concentration map was generated using the interpolation technique of 'inverse distance weighting'. The distributions of PM concentrations were investigated with commuting time by administrative district and the outcome was related with land-use type and volume of traffic. Results from this analysis indicated distribution pattern of PM10 concentration was different from that of PM2.5 by administrative district and time. The distribution of PM concentration was strongly related to not only the size of business and trafficked areas among the land-use type, but also the existence of urban green. Further analysis of the relationship between the PM concentration and detailed land-use and urban green maps can be helpful to identify spatial factors which have an impact on the PM concentration on the regional scale.
The purpose of this study is to reveal the component characteristics and the channels of distribution for forest products as a fuel that were consumed in Kyeongseong city (Seoul) in 1929, in the middle of the colonial period. The summary of the results are as follows; (1) though the average consumption of forest products consumed as a fuel per household in Kyeongseong city was slightly less than one-third as much forest products as fuel consumed in other counties of Kyeongki province, but due to the high heat capacity, the amount of fuelwood and charcoal consumption was much higher than leaf and grass consumption; (2) the largest supply areas of forest products for fuel were the riverside of Kangwon province and Kyeonggi province in which the waterways were available. They supplied 42.6% of total consumption, and the other supply areas were the northern part of Kyeonggi province, etc. (29.5%) where railroads were handy, and the suburbs of Kyeongseong City (27.9%) by roads; (3) the transportation areas using the Han River were divided into two parts of Ttook island (43.0%) and former Yongsan and Mapo (45.6%), but the volume of transportation by railroad was centralized in Kyeongseong Station, which accounted for 72.2% of total volume of transportation by rail; (4) the most of the forest products consumed for fuel in Kyeongseoung city were sold in temporary fuelwood markets, rather than permanent and regular markets.

In this study, a remote air quality monitoring system for underground spaces was developed by using NDIR-based CO$_2$ sensor. And the remote monitoring system based on wireless sensor networks was installed practically on the subway station platform. More than 6.5 million citizens commutate everyday by the Seoul subway transportation that is the most typical public transportation. They concern about air quality with increasing interest on public health or many workers in subway stations or underground shopping centers. Recently, the Korean Ministry of Environment has operated the air quality monitoring system in some subway stations for testing phase. However, it showed many defects which are large-scale, high-cost and maintenance of precision sensors imported from abroad. Therefore this research includes the reliability test and a theoretical study about the inexpensive commercialized CO$_2$ sensor for reliable measurement of air quality which changes rapidly by the surrounding environments. And then we develop the wireless sensor nodes and the gateway applied for remote air quality monitoring. In addition, web server program was realized to manage air quality in the subway platform. This result will be valuable for a basic research for air quality management in underground spaces for future study.

Recently, governmental authority and local government are looking for a method of utilizing location information of smart phone for urgent rescue in fire and kidnap situation. Under this background, in this study, a method of rapidly collecting, constructing location determination based Wi-Fi AP data utilizing location information of smart phone and mobile mapping system was suggested in order to construct precise positioning information that could be utilized under urgent situation. By performing compensation work for GPS/INS/DMI through collected outcome, position of collected vehicle was acquired. In addition, source data integrating Wi-Fi information and collected position by coupling based on Wi-Fi AP collector and GPS time was constructed and Wi-Fi radiomap was constructed by removing Wi-Fi signal noise that reduces precise position performance. As a result of performing location determination performance assess ment by selecting 10 test positions by each local government, result value of 25.46cm for total local government average and 27.76m for SD could be obtained. It is considered that this result could be utilized as a technology of being able to supplement or substituting GPS location determination technology that is impossible in plocation determination of mobile communication company's base station (200m~2km) and indoor being used at present.
In this paper, according to the illuminance at night with artificial lighting in downtown Seoul, trees flowering and leaf growth rate was performed as a case study to examine whether there is a difference. The illuminance was measured at 78 points on a total of 26 points, the range of illuminance were divided into three groups considering land use, Group A (plots 1-7) were 4.90 ~ 112.50 lx, Group B (plots 8 to 18) were 0.45 ~ 42.40 lx, group C (plots 19 to 26) were 0.28 ~ 22.10 lx. According to the One-way ANOVA on illuminance difference, the survey groups were classified into three groups. To survey the ratio of the flowering Prunus yedoensis and Rhododendron spp. and to survey the ratio of leaf growth Zelkova serrata, Ginkgo biloba, and Acer palmatum each 30 individuals were investigated. Rhododendron spp. to study the ratio of the flowering and Acer palmatum to study the ratio of leaf growth were determined to be useful as indicator woody species according to the correlation. The higher illuminance of night lighting is, the faster flowering and leaf growth of trees will be by correlation between the mean illuminance of each group and the flowering and leaf growth of trees. In the future, should be made a more detailed study of how much affect to the trees with some impact on the level of light pollution at night lighting.
