First Report of Sclerotium Rot on Cymbidium Orchids Caused by Sclerotium rolfsii in Korea

  • Sclerotium rot was found on Cymbidium orchids at Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea, in July, 2010. Symptoms occurred on low leaves, which turned yellowish, after which the entire plant wilted. Severely infected plants were blighted and eventually died. White mycelial mats and sclerotia appeared on pseudobulbs. Based on the mycological characteristics and pathogenicity, the causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii. This is the first report of new Sclerotium rot on Cymbidium spp. caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.

Purification and Properties of $\beta$-Fructofuranosidase (마늘(Allium sativum L.)로부터 추출한 $\beta$-Frucdtofuranosidase의 정제 및 성질)

  • A $\beta$-fructofuranosidase of garlic (Allium sativum L. ; Seosan) was purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and gel filtration chromatography with a recovery of 8.3%. The molecular mass of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 79kDa by SDS-PAGE, which revealed two subunits of 41kDa and 38kDa. Maximum enzyme activity was observed at pH 5.0 and 40$^\circ C$ and the enzyme was stable over the pH range of 4.0-6.0 and below 50$^\circ C$. The Km value for sucrose was 15.5mM and the enzyme activity was significantly inhibited by bivalent metal ions(Hg$^2+$, Cu$^2+$, Cd$^2+$) and EDTA.

  • 시정장애현상의 직접적인 원인은 주로 0.1~2.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ 크기의 미세입자들에 의한 빛의 산란 및 흡수현상으로(Feidlander, 1977), 이러한 미세입자들은 각종 오염원에서 직접 배출되기도 하지만, 대부분 대기 중에서 1차 오염물질들이 서로 반응, 응축, 응집하여 생성, 성장한 2차 에어로솔이다(국립환경연구원, 1994). 2차 에어로솔의 생성 및 성장, 성분 및 농도는 기체상의 SO$_2$, NOx CO, CO$_3$, 총탄화수소 등과, 입자상인 부유분진의 농도와 같은 1차 오염물질들 뿐만 아니라, 온도, 습도, 풍향, 풍속, 일사량, 혼합고 등의 여러 기상조건 및 지형조건의 영향을 받는다.   • This paper reports a case study of dynamic consolidation. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ground improvement at the site for Hyundai Petrochemical Compound constructed at Daesan-Myeon, Seosan-Gun in the western shores of Korea. The site ground was prepared by filling on the existing soft marine deposit which consists of a loose granular soil layer and a medium stiff clay layer. For the stabilization of site ground, the compaction was executed in three different procedures with same pounder weigh, drop height and imprint spacing. The post investigation showed that the object was successfully achieved indicating a significant increase of bearing capacity of the treated ground. In this study the effectiveness of dynamic consolidation is evluated for various factors the applied energy, temping sequences, the radial distance from the imprint location and the depth of bed rock.

Leaf Spot of Cymbidium hybrida Caused by Fusarium proliferatum (Fusarium proliferatum에 의한 심비디움 저무늬병)

  • Leaf spot of Cymbidium hybrida caused by Fusarium sp. was observed at major cultivating areas including Seosan and Cheonan of Korea from 1996 to 1998. The major symptoms of the disease were small brown to black spots, 1∼2 mm I diameter, with yellow halo. Based on the mycological characteristics, Fusarium sp. isolated from the lesions was identified as Fusarium proliferatum. Macroconidia were slender, falcate to almost straight, usually 3 to 5 septate and thin walled. Microconidia were formed in chains from polyphialides, clavate or oval, usually 1-celled with flattened base. Chlamydospores were absent. The fungus showed pathogenicity to Cymbidium hybrida.

  • It is a fundamental study for the hardened bodies of $CaO-SiO_2-H_2O$ system to clear up various physical properties and structures of the products, using the Seosan quartz and $Ca(OH)_2$(C. P. grade) as raw materials. Various samples were obtained by varying $CaO/SiO_2$ mole ratio (0.3∼2.1) and hydrothermal conditions ($100∼220^{\circ}C$ and 2∼14hr.) within the given limit. It was found that tobermorite phase as hydrate is contained in the hardened bodies and that the development of crystal has a great influence on the strengths and other physical properties of hardened bodies.

  • The objective of this study is to propese a model of elementary school whih reflects the goal of the 7th Reform in Primary & Seconday School Curriculum and attracts prtvate investment through Seokwang elementaey snhool in Seosan. The chief concept of architectural planning on this school is brought out by the analysis of the 7th Reform which pursues a self-regulative and initiative education. Based on this analysis, a proper dimensions of each space are proposed and a new model of elementary school which includes zoning by grade in grouping of the classrooms and outdoor spaces is proposed. As there is no domestic example of the elementary school complex with attraction of private investment in public schools, the matters which must be consideed in planning of this complex are unvectigated, and actual plan for Seokwang elementary school is proposed.

  • This study reviews the concept of disclosure, disclosure risks, and uniqueness. The number of uniqueness in the population is of great importance in evaluating the disclosure risk of micro data files. We approach this problem by considering some basic superpopulation models including the Multinomial-Dirichlet model, the Poisson- Gamma model of Bethlehem et al. (1990) and Takemura (1997), and the Modified Multinomial-Dirichlet model. We decided the critical population size of each superpopulation model for four different superpopulation models.

  • In the study of population dynamics of non-biting midges (Diptera: Chironomidae) emerging from reclaimed rice fields in Seosan, Chungchongnam-do, Korea, a new species, Tanytarsus seosanensis sp. nov. and an unrecorded species from Korea, Chironomus javonus (Kieffer) were found. T.seosonensis was the third dominant species among the non-biting midges found in the reclaimed rice fields, whereas C.javanus was a rare species. They are fully described with illustrations.

  • Natural(outdoor) and accelerated(artificial) weathering tests were performed to investigate their influence on polycarbonate. The polycarbonate materials were prepared of various formulations divided into three batches, with existing, development materials1, development materials2, containing mixture of UV additives. Weathering tests were carried out as outdoor weathering(Seosan, South Korea) and accelerated weathering(xenon-arc), and the results analysis were evaluated based on yellow-index(YI), scanning electron microscope(SEM/EDS), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(XRD), and gel permeation chromatography(GPC). Among the three materials, processing method development materials1 with UV stabilizer was excellent in weathering. This study can provide basic data for standardization of development and performance evaluation on livestock barn roof.
