Simple Qualitative Sensory Assessment of Patients with Orofacial Sensory Dysfunction

  • Purpose: Oral and facial sensation is affected by various factors, including trauma and disease. This study assessed the clinical profile of patients diagnosed with sensory dysfunction and investigated their sensory perception using simple qualitative sensory tests. Methods: Based on a retrospective review of the medical records, we analyzed a total of 68 trigeminal nerve branches associated with sensory dysfunction in 52 subjects. We analyzed the frequency and etiology of sensory dysfunction, and the frequency of different types of sensory perception in response to qualitative sensory testing using tactile and pin-prick stimuli. Results: The inferior alveolar nerve branch was the most frequently involved in sensory dysfunction (88.5%). Third molar extraction (36.5%) and implant surgery (36.5%) were the most frequent etiological factors associated with sensory dysfunction. Hypoesthesia was the most frequent sensory response to tactile stimuli (60.3%). Pin-prick stimuli elicited hyperalgesia, hypoalgesia, and analgesia in 32.4%, 27.9%, and 36.8%, respectively. A significant association was found between the two kinds of stimuli (p=0.260). Conclusions: Sensory dysfunction frequently occurs in the branches of the trigeminal nerve, including the inferior alveolar nerve, mainly due to trauma associated with dental treatment. Simple qualitative sensory testing can be conveniently used to screen sensory dysfunction in patients with altered sensation involving oral and facial regions.

그룹 감각통합치료가 학령전기 발달지연 아동의 감각운동 및 행동 변화에 미치는 효과 (The Effects of Group Sensory Integrative Intervention for Sensory Motor Ability and Behaviors for Children With Developmental Delay)

  • 목적: 본 연구는 그룹 감각통합치료가 학령전기 발달지연 아동의 감각운동 및 행동 변화에 미치는 효과에 대하여 알아보았다. 연구방법: 연구대상은 만 3~5세의 발달지연 아동 5명이었고, 실험기간은 2009년 6월에서 11월까지이었다. 그룹 감각통합치료는 주 1회(매 70분), 총 26회기를 실시하였다. 그룹 감각통합치료의 효과를 알아보기 위해 단일집단 사전-사후 설계(one group pretest-posttest design)를 사용하였다. 그룹감각통합치료 사전/사후의 임상관찰, Behavior during testing의 차이는 윌콕슨 순위검정(Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks test)을 사용하여 분석하였다. 결과: 그룹 감각통합치료 전과후의 임상관찰(Z=-2.023, p=.043) 점수는 소폭 상승하였으나 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 행동 변화를 보기 위한 하위 카테고리인 사회성(Z=-2.121, p=.034), 주의집중(Z=-2.032, p=.042)과총B점ehavior during testing (Z=-2.032, p=.042)에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보였다. 결론: 본 연구는 그룹 감각통합치료가 감각운동 발달에 긍정적인 영향을 미치나 확실한 근거를 제시하기 에는 미흡하며, 사회성 및 주의집중과같은 행동 변화에는 효과가 있음을 제시하였다. 이는 개별적인 감각통합치료에 대한 연구는 많으나 그룹 감각통합치료의 효과에 대한 연구는 거의 없는 실정이므로 그룹치료에 대한 근거를 제시하였다는 것에 의의가 있다. 그러나 연구대상자의 수가 적고, 다양한 내적 환경적 요소에 의해 영향을 받을 수 있으므로 연구결과를 일반화하기에는 어려움이 있다. 따라서 향후 연구에서는 대상 아동의 수를 고려하고, 외적변인을 제한하며, 보다 객관적인 자료 수집 방법을 사용해야 할 것으로 사료된다.

  • The potential impact of the methods of sensory science on consumer testing and marketing is reviewed. Areas such as predicting purchase behavior, new approaches to scaling, and cross cultural effects are discussed. An example of the complexity of sensory measurement used to obtain consumer and marketing information is highlighted, using the simple paired preference test as an example.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the contents of job for the sensory inspection on the basis of the probability theory, and the new determination for an index(d') of the testing power precision in carrying out sensory inspections. Also presented are the evaluation method of determining the ability of inspector by presuming the confidence interval for the average record of inspector, and the computation method for the index (de') of the testing power precision required as the goal-value in accordance with quality character, process inferior ratio, and required AOQ.

Effect of 8% lidocaine spray on the sensory and pain thresholds of the skin of the face and hands evaluated by quantitative sensory testing

  • Background: Recently, we examined the effects of 2% lidocaine gel on the tactile sensory and pain thresholds of the face, tongue and hands of symptom-free individuals using quantitative sensory testing (QST); its effect was less on the skin of the face and hands than on the tongue. Consequently, instead of 2% lidocaine gel, we examined the effect of 8% lidocaine spray on the tactile sensory and pain thresholds of the skin of the face and hands of healthy volunteers. Methods: Using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, QST of the skin of the cheek and palm (thenar skin) was performed in 20 healthy volunteers. In each participant, two topical sprays were applied. On one side, 0.2 mL of 8% lidocaine pump spray was applied, and on the other side, 0.2 mL of saline pump spray was applied as control. In each participant, QST was performed before and 15 min after each application. Pain intensity was measured using a numeric rating scale (NRS). Results: Both the tactile detection threshold and filament-prick pain detection threshold of the cheek and thenar skin increased significantly after lidocaine application. A significant difference between the effect of lidocaine and saline applications was found on the filament-prick pain detection threshold only. NRS of the cheek skin and thenar skin decreased after application of lidocaine, and not after application of saline. Conclusion: The significant effect of applying an 8% lidocaine spray on the sensory and pain thresholds of the skin of the face and hands can be objectively scored using QST.

  • 관능검사법(官能檢査法)에 의한 식품(食品)의 품질(品質) 평가(評價)를 위하여 관능(官能) 파넬을 선발(選拔)하여 우유에 대한 차이(差異) 식별(識別) 시험(試驗)을 실시하여 다음과 같은 결과(結果)를 얻었다. 1. 파넬원 선발(選拔)의 일반(一般) 기준(基準), 감도(感度) 시험(試驗)및 차이(差異) 식별(識別) 능력(能力) 시험(試驗)을 통하여 40명의 관능(官能) 파넬을 선발(選拔)하였으며 또한 그들이 우유 품질(品質)의 관능적(官能的) 평가(評價)에 있어서 정상 능력을 갖도록 훈련(練訓)을 실시하였다. 2. 파넬원의 기본(基本) 맛에 대한 감도(感度) 시험(試驗) 결과(結果) 짠맛, 신맛, 쓴맛 및 단맛의 평균 최소(最小) 감도(感度)양(量)은 각각 0.0128M sodium chloride, 0.008M citric acid, 0.0016M caffeine 및 0.0256 M sucrose이었다. 3. 시판(市販) 5개(個) 회사(會社) 제품(製品)의 우유 시료(試料) 간(間)에 단일시료법(單一試料法), 2점(點) 대비법(對比法), 1 2 점(點) 시험법(試驗法) 및 3점(點) 시험법(試驗法)에 의한 차이(差異) 식별(識別) 시험(試驗)을 통하여 1% 수준(水準)이상에서 유의적(有意的)인 차이(差異)가 인정(認定)되었다.

Evaluation of Sensory on Gochujang with Zanthoxylum piperitum and Chrysanthemum indicum Essential Oils

  • Gochujang samples with essential oils were evaluated for sensory including taste and, smell during various storage periods with the aim of developing improved high value-added products. The sensory testing was performed on Gochujang with 0.005% Zanthoxylum piperitum and Chrysanthemum indicum essential oils, extracted through steam distillation. During storage at 4 and $20^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks, sensory testing was performed at 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks by trained panelists. Overall quality decreased in Gochujang samples containing Z.piperitum essential oil and increased in samples containing C.indicum essential oil, at 4 and $20^{\circ}C$. Samples stored at $4^{\circ}C$ were quality more then those stored at $20^{\circ}C$. Sensory evaluation was highest for Gochujang with C.indicum essential oil stored at $4^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that functional Gochujang can be developed by adding small quantities of essential oils. Increasing the amount of essential oil added is likely to affect the innate taste and flavor of Gochujang.

뇌졸중 환자의 상지부종에 대한 정량적 감각 평가 (Quantitative sensory Testing on Edema of Upper Extremity for Stroke Patients)

  • 본 연구는 뇌졸중 편마비 환자를 대상으로 비마비측과 상지부종이 있는 마비측의 정량적 감각 평가(QST)를 비교함으로서 부종 관리 및 치료에 대한 기초자료를 제공하고자 하였다. 연구의 목적에 맞는 아급성기 뇌졸중 환자I군(n=15)과 만성기 뇌졸중 환자II군(n=17)을 대상으로 비마비측과 마비측에 대한 상지용적의 차이, 기계적 동통 역치(MPT), 냉감역치(CST), 온감역치(WST), 냉통증역치(CPT), 온통증역치(WPT), 진동감각 역치(VST)에 대한 정량적 감각 평가(QST)를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 각 군내 비교 시 모든 측정 항목에서 유의한 차이가 나타났고(p<.001), I군과 II군의 군간 마비측 감각 평가 비교에서는 기계적 동통 역치(MPT)를 제외한 모든 측정 항목에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.05). 아급성기에는 만성기에 비해 상지부종으로 감각역치 증가로 인한 감각저하가 초래되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 뇌졸중 환자의 부종에 따른 감각적 특성 차이를 정량적 평가를 통해 알아보고자 하였다.

Orofacial Thermal Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST): A Study of Healthy Korean Women and Sex Difference

  • Purpose: Thermal sensory test as an essential part of quantitative sensory testing (QST) has been recognized as a useful tool in the evaluation of the trigeminal nerve function. Normative data in the orofacial region have been reported but the data on differences in the test site, sex and ethnicity are still insufficient. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the normal range of orofacial thermal QST data in the healthy Korean women, and assess sex difference of thermal perception in the orofacial regions. Methods: Thermal QST was conducted on 20 healthy women participants (mean age, 26.4 years; range, 21 to 34 years). The thermal thresholds (cold detection threshold, CDT; warm detection threshold, WDT; cold pain threshold, CPT; and heat pain threshold, HPT) were measured bilaterally at the 5 trigeminal sites (the forehead, cheek, mentum, lower lip and tongue tip). The normative thermal thresholds of women in the orofacial region were evaluated using one-way ANOVA and compared with the previously reported data from age- and site-matched 30 healthy men (mean age, 26.1 years; range, 23 to 32 years) using two-way ANOVA. One experienced operator performed the tests of both sexes and all tests were done in the same condition except the time variability. Results: Women showed significant site differences for the CDT (p<0.001), WDT (p<0.001), and HPT (p=0.047) in the orofacial region. The CDT (p<0.001) and the CPT (p=0.007) presented significant sex difference unlike the WDT and the HPT. Conclusions: The thermal sensory evaluation in the orofacial region should be considered in the context of site and sex and the normative data in this study could be useful for assessment of the sensory abnormalities in the clinical setting.

Comparison of South Korean and Japanese Sensibility about Beauty of HIRAGANA

  • Because hand-written characters, especially drawn by a brush can give readers various impressions, they are not only a communication method but also art works. Authors have already investigated the relationship between brush motion analytical results and sensory testing results obtained from Japanese hiragana and reported quantitative evaluation method for the beauty of hiragana, In this paper, sensory tests for South Koreans who cannot recognize the word are carried out, compared with sensory testing results of Japanese. The evaluation objects are 6 hiragana drawn by 4 beginners and 2 experts, Semantic Differential Method based on 30 paired evaluation words are used in the sensory tests. Therefore South Koreans also feel the beauty in hiragana drawn by experts, as compared with by beginners. On the other hand it was confirmed that South Koreans couldnt recognize the difference among beginners. Judging from the factor analysis results, both Japanese and South Koreans selected stability as the 1st factor, there is interesting difference in the following orders.
