Various electrophysiological tests have provided a large body of valuable information on neuronal responses to a presented stimulus. The special and general somatic sensory pathways are main targets of evoked potentials. Two types of evoked potentials, exogenous and endogenous, are commonly used. Exogenous evoked potentials of general and special somatic sensory systems will be reviewed. One of general somatic sensory functional pathways, proprioception, can be evaluated by general somatosensory evoked potentials with electrical stimulation on nerves. The special somatosensory functional pathways, including vision, and audition, can be evaluated by visual evoked potentials and auditory evoked potentials. Also laser-evoked potentials are newly developed for pain pathway, including lateral spinothalamic pathway, and vestibular myogenic evoked potentials for sacculocollic pathways. The evoked potentials of sensory system have maximal clinical utility in evaluating functional deficits along the sensory pathways. They are used for evaluating comatose patients, hysterical patients, premature infants, patients with suspected demyelinating diseases or neoplasms, and research. We discuss the neurophysiologic tests of sensory systems in views of practical points. The organized evaluation of sensory electrophysiologic tests can be helpful in detecting and estimating the abnormalities in neurological diseases.
The phenomenon of color sensory has been mainly studied on the relation with the stimulus source of light source color according to dispersed energy of light. However, it has not been definitely found that the phenomenon of color sensory be collcerned with evoked potentials stimulated by object color. This paper proposes the method that evoked potentials stimulated by object colors are analyzed and examined on the phenomemon of color sensory. The model of evoked potentials is assumed that it is consisted of an additive noise and a transient signal caused by stimulus. The method which is used to estimate the signal is time-varying filtering.

Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (INM) is very useful in monitoring the motorsensory pathway and vascular circulation system during intraspinal, or intracranial neurosurgery. Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEPs) are for detecting the problems along the auditory pathways including, the eighth cranial nerve and brainstem. Motor Evoked Potentials (MEPs) is a useful adjunct to conventional monitoring of Somato-sensory Evoked Potentials (SEPs) during surgery. Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) has been regarded as having limited significance for the preservation of visual function during neurosurgical procedures. In this paper, we propose that the most appropriate averaging of the number of inspections in the inspection of each used in the operative field, is good and efficient, functionally.
Evoked potentials(EP) are defined as electric responses of the nerves system to sensory stimulation. EPs are used mainly to test conduction in the visual, auditory, and somatosensory systems, especially in the central parts of these systems. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) are the potentials elicited by stimulation of peripheral nerves and recorded at various sites along the sensory pathway. SEPs types consist mainly of SEPs to electric stimulation of arm or leg nerves. SEPs to arm stimulation are usually recorded simultaneously from clavicular, cervical, and scalp electrodes; SEPs to leg stimulation are recorded from lumbar, low thoracic, and scalp electrodes. Subject variables that have practical impotance are age, limb length, body height, and temperature. General clinical interpretation of abnormal SEPs wave decreases of peripheral conduction time, and abolition of SEPs recorded from different levels to identify lesions of peripheral nerves, plexus, nerve root, spinal cord, cauda equina, hemispheric brainstem, and cerebral parts of the somatosensory pathway.
Clinical usefulness of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) as a prognostic tool was evaluated with three dogs showing clinical signs associated with intervertebral disc diseases. Prior to measure SSEP, history taking, physical examination, radiological study and neurological examination were performed. In case 1, poor prognosis was predicted because deep pain was not observed and loss of sensory function was observed in SSEP. And the clinical signs persisted with the conservative treatment. However, in cases 2 and 3, good prognoses were predicted by normal conduction velocity in SSEP that meant the presence of sensory function. The clinical signs of cases 2 and 3 disappeared at days 18 and 13 after treatment, respectively. These results suggest SSEP be used clinically as a prognostic tool in dogs with intervertebral disc diseases.
Dysfunction of the inferior alveolar nerve may result from trauma, diseases or iatrogenic injury. The development and refinement of an objective method to evaluate this clinical problem is highly desirable and needed, especially concerning for an increasing medico-legal issue. Evoked potential techniques have attracted considerable attention as a means of assessing the function and integrity of nerve pathways. The purpose of this study was to characterize the Sensory Evoked Potentials(SEPs) and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials(SSEPs) elicited by electrical stimulation of mental nerve. SEPs and SSEPs were measured and analyzed statistically before and after needle injury on the inferior alveolar nerve of Sprague-Dawalye rats. Measuring SEPs was more sensitive in evaluation of the recovery of sensory function from inferior alveolar nerve injury then measuring SSEPs but we measured SSEPs in the hope of providing a safe, simple and objective test to check oral and facial sensibility, which is acceptable to the patient. We stimulated mental nerve after needle injury on the inferior alveolar nerve and SEPS on the level of mandibular foramen and SSEPs on the level of cerebral cortex were recorded. Threshold, amplitude, and latency of both of SEPs and SSEPs were analyzed. The results were as follows ; 1. Threshold of SEPs and SSEPs were $184{\pm}14{\mu}A$ and $164{\pm}14{\mu}A$ respectively. 2 SEPs were composed of 2 waves, i.e., N1 N2 in which N1 was conducted by II fibers and N2 was conducted by III fibers. 3. SSEPS were composed of 5 waves, of which N1 and N2 shower statistically significant changes(p<0.01, unpaired t-test). 4. SEPs and SSEPs were observed to be abolished immediately after local anesthesia and recovered 30 minutes later. 5. SEPs were abolished immediately after injury. N1 of SSEPs was abolished immediately and amplitued of N2 was decreased($20.7{\pm}12.2%$) immediately after 23G needle injury, but N3, N4 and N5 did not change significantly. Recovery of waveform delayed 30 minutes in SEPs and 45 minutes in SSEPs. 6. The degree of decrease in amplitude of SEPs and SSEPs, after 30G needle injury was smaller than those with 23G. SEPs recorded on the level of mandibular foramen were though to be reliable and useful in the assessment of the function of the inferior alveolar nerve after injury. Amplitude of SSEPs reflected the function and integrity of nerve and measuring them provided a safe, simple and abjective test to check oral and facial sensibility. These results suggest that measuring SEPs and SSEPs are meaningful methods for objective assessment in the diagnosis of nerve injury. N1 and N2 of SSEPs can be useful parameters for the evaluation of the nerve function following a needle injury.

Sensory dysfunction following the injury of the inferior alveolar nerve requires objective examination to get a reproducible data and to provide necessary treatment. This study was designed to evaluate if the SEP(somatosensory evoked potentials) of the mental nerve can be used as an objective method for the diagnosis of nerve injury and sensory disturbances. The subjects were nineteen patients ($37.4{\pm}11.3$ years old) who had been suffered from sensory disturbance of the unilateral lower lip and mental region for over 6 months after the inferior alveolar nerve injuries confirmed by the microsurgical explorations. The clinical neurosensory tests as SLTD(static light touch discrimination), MDD(moving direction discrimination), 2PD(two point discrimination), PPN(pin prick nociception) and accompanied pain were preceded to electro-physiologic examinations as SEP. The score of sensory dysfunction (sum score of all sensory tests) ranged from 0 to 8 were compared to the latency differences of the mental nerve SEPs. The correlation between clinical sensory scores and SEPs were tested by Spearman nonparametric rank correlation analysis, the differences in SEP latency by Kruskal-Wallis test and the latency differences according to PPN and accompanied pain by Mann-Whitney U test. This study resulted that the difference of the latencies between normal side and affected side was $2.22{\pm}2.46$ msec and correlated significantly with the neurosensory dysfunction scores (p=0.0001). Conclusively, the somatosensory evoked potentials of the mental nerve can be a useful diagnostic method to evaluate the inferior alveolar nerve injuries and the change of sensory dysfunction to be reproduced as an objective assessment.
This paper proposes the method that evoked potentials stimulated by object colors are analyzed and examined on the phenomemon of color sensory. The method which is used to estimate the signal is time-varying. filtering (TVF). At the results of experiment which used object colors, it is shown that color sensory times of red are within the range of 0.0~0.25[sec], those of yellow are within the range of 0.25~0.55[sec], and those of blue are within the range of 0.55~0.75[sec]; they are inclined to sequence in accending order as red, yellow, and blue.
The visual evoked potentials(VEPs) is used to assist in the diagnosis of specific disorders associated with involvement of the sensory visual pathways. The P100 latency is an important parameter which is diagnosis of optic nerve disorders. There are characteristics of latency delay, wave distortion, amplitude deduction in abnormal subjects. It is difficult to diagnose in the case of producing peak at the P100 latency. In this paper, difference of pattern between normal VEPs and abnormal VEPs using the Choi-Williams distribution method is studied. We observed the relationship about time and spectrum. The result shown that normal VEPs had maximum spectral value at 20Hz~26.7Hz and abnormal VEPs had maximum spectral value at 16.7Hz~20Hz. Also normal VEPs spectrum is higher than abnormal VEPs spectrum.

Cerebral vascular surgery can damage patients' motor and sensory nerves; therefore, neuromonitoring is performed intraoperatively. Patients with diabetes often have peripheral neuropathy and may be prone to nerve damage during surgery. This study aimed to identify factors that should be considered when diabetic patients undergo intraoperative neuromonitoring during brain vascular surgery and to present new criteria. Methods: In patients with and without diabetes who underwent cerebrovascular surgery (n = 30/group), we compared the intraoperative stimulation intensity, postoperative motor power and sensory, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and glucose levels, and imaging findings. Results: Fasting glucose, blood glucose, and HbA1c levels were 10%, 12.1%, and 9.7%, respectively; they were higher in patients with than in patients without diabetes. Two patients with diabetes had weakness, and 10 required increased Somato sensory evoked potential (SSEP) stimulation, while in 16, motor power recovered over time rather than immediately. The non-diabetic group had no weakness after surgery, but 10 patients required more increased SSEP stimulation. The diabetic group showed significantly more abnormal test results than the non-diabetic group. Conclusion: For patients with diabetes undergoing surgery with intraoperative neuromonitoring, whether diabetic peripheral neuropathy is present, their blood glucose level and the anesthetic used should be considered.
