  • MANET(Mobile Ad-hoc Network)s have been researched primary at routing protocols and at the guarantees of QoS(Quality of Service) for mobile environments. Otherwise the Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USNs) have some limitations in power energies and in processing of sensing data, as well as their network topologies are frequently changed by fading off and node failures. Thus we should redesign network protocols with concerning to energy efficiency for the USNs above all. In this paper, we focus on the protocol interface for managing for USNs based on the surveys. And then we figure the topology of USNs out and design the network protocol interface to make power saved, with data gathering and processing more efficient using our designed packet structures.

FE model of electrical resistivity survey for mixed ground prediction ahead of a TBM tunnel face

  • Accurate prediction of mixed ground conditions ahead of a tunnel face is of vital importance for safe excavation using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Previous studies have primarily focused on electrical resistivity surveys from the ground surface for geotechnical investigation. In this study, an FE (finite element) numerical model was developed to simulate electrical resistivity surveys for the prediction of risky mixed ground conditions in front of a tunnel face. The proposed FE model is validated by comparing with the apparent electrical resistivity values obtained from the analytical solution corresponding to a vertical fault on the ground surface (i.e., a simplified model). A series of parametric studies was performed with the FE model to analyze the effect of geological and sensor geometric conditions on the electrical resistivity survey. The parametric study revealed that the interface slope between two different ground formations affects the electrical resistivity measurements during TBM excavation. In addition, a large difference in electrical resistivity between two different ground formations represented the dramatic effect of the mixed ground conditions on the electrical resistivity values. The parametric studies of the electrode array showed that the proper selection of the electrode spacing and the location of the electrode array on the tunnel face of TBM is very important. Thus, it is concluded that the developed FE numerical model can successfully predict the presence of a mixed ground zone, which enables optimal management of potential risks.

Tutorial on the Principle of Borehole Deviation Survey - An Application of the Coordinate Transforms (시추공 공곡 측정의 원리 - 좌표계 변환의 응용)

  • To share an understanding of trajectory measurement in surveys using borehole, this tutorial summarizes the relevant mathematical principles of the borehole deviation survey based on coordinate transform. For uncased or open holes, calculations of the azimuth-deviation-tool face rotation using three-component accelerometer and magnetometer measurements are summarized. For the steel-cased holes, calculations are based on the time-derivative formula of the coordinate transform matrix; yaw-pitch-roll angles through time are mathematically determined by integrating the threecomponent angular velocity measurements from the gyroscope while also removing the Earth's rotation effect. Sensor and data fusion to increase the accuracy of borehole deviation survey is explained with an example of the method. These principles of borehole deviation surveys can be adapted for attitude estimation in air-borne surveys or for positioning in tunnels where global positioning system (GPS) signals cannot be accessed. Information on the optimization filter that must be incorporated in sensor fusion is introduced to help future research.

  • As mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs become more popular, users are becoming accustomed to consuming a massive amount of multimedia content every day without time or space limitations. From the industry, the need for user satisfaction investigation has consequently emerged. Conventional methods to investigate user satisfaction usually employ user feedback surveys or interviews, which are considered manual, subjective, and inefficient. Therefore, the authors focus on a more objective method of investigating users' brainwaves to measure how much they enjoy their content. Particularly for multimedia content, it is natural that users will be immersed in the played content if they are satisfied with it. In this paper, the authors propose a method of using a portable and dry electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor device to overcome the limitations of the existing conventional methods and to further advance existing EEG-based studies. The proposed method uses a portable EEG sensor device that has a small, dry (i.e., not wet or adhesive), and simple sensor using a single channel, because the authors assume mobile device environments where users consider the features of portability and usability to be important. This paper presents how to measure attention, gauge and compute a score of user's content immersion level after addressing some technical details related to adopting the portable EEG sensor device. Lastly, via an experiment, the authors verified a meaningful correlation between the computed scores and the actual user satisfaction scores.

Monitoring Efficiency Evaluation of Camera Trapping in Terrestrial Mammals (카메라 트래핑을 이용한 육상포유류 모니터링 효율성 평가)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the monitoring efficiency of camera trapping in wild animals and to determine ways to increase its utilization. Nineteen sensor cameras were installed in Sobaeksan National Park from October 2012 to September 2013. During the study period, a total of 1045 terrestrial mammal photos were secured and 15 species habitats were identified. Shooting frequency was higher for medium and large mammals, especially full images of carnivores accounted for approximately 83%. A comparison of track surveys revealed that camera trapping was highly efficient and helped in capturing real image of species. The supply of lure and bait stimulates the sense of smell in carnivores, which further enhances the capturing of images by camera trapping. The results of this study provide data on the ecological characteristics of mammals, which can aid in determining habitat use by these animals, and thereby facilitate prevention of crop damage by wildlife.

  • The maintenance of a ship is essential for safe navigation and hence regular surveys are prescribed according to the rule of classification societies. A hull inspection is generally performed by professional divers, but it takes a long time and the efficiency is low in terms of time and cost. In this research, a ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) named as SNU-ROV(Seoul National University-ROV) is developed to replace the conventional inspection method. In this system, the ROV is intended to be used for inspecting ship and harbor because harbor inspection is merging as a safety measure against any possible terror actions. In order to increase the efficiency of inspection, the ROV must be able to measure the exact position of damages. SNU-ROV has a positioning system based on LBL(Long Base Line). In shallow water such as harbor, however, LBL has bad DOP(Dilution of Precision) in the depth direction due to the limited depth. Thus LBL only can not locate the exact depth position. To solve the DOP problem, a pressure sensor is introduced to LBL and a complementary filter is attached by using indirect feedback Kalman filter. Thus developed positioning system is verified by simulation and experiment in towing tank.

  • The occurrence of harmful algae on the coast of Korea has been a cause of damage to the aquaculture industry and deterioration of the coastal ecosystem environment. A method is required to predict their outbreak in real-time at the site. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a small hybrid optical sensor and real-time monitoring system based on LiDAR that can be used in the field and laboratory and can be applied to various platforms. FMS-L specifically suggested the amount of Chlorophyll a (Chl a) in the sample by measuring and analyzing the fluorescence emitted by the irradiating light. The accuracy of FMS-L was verified by measuring the concentrations of standard Chlorophyll a substances and Margalfidinium polykirkoids. In addition, the precision was verified by comparing the measurement results of FMS-L using commercial equipment Phyto-PAM-II. This equipment is compact and easy to move. Therefore, it can be easily applied to field surveys, allows short time measurements (10 s), and can be applied at a distance of 10 m from the measurement site.

  • Plasmonic-based biosensing technologies have been successfully commercialized and applied for monitoring various biomolecular interactions occurring at a sensor surface. In particular, the recent advances in nanofabrication methods and nanoparticle syntheses provide a new route to overcome the limitations of a conventional surface plasmon resonance biosensor, such as detection limit, sensitivity, selectivity, and throughput. In this paper, optical and physical properties of plasmonic nanostructures and their contributions to a realization of enhanced optical detection platforms are reviewed. Following vast surveys of the exploitation of metallic nanostructures supporting localized field enhancement, we will propose an outlook for future directions associated with a development of new types of plasmonic sensing substrates

  • The geometry PIG provides pipeline operators with continuous measurement of pipe centerline coordinates, bend radius, displacement, and bending strain in a single pass through the pipeline. This study introduces the developed geometry PIG(Pipeline Inspection Gauge) which is used for geometry surveys. This tool is equipped with the several sensor systems. The Inertial Navigation System (INS) comprises angle rate gyros and linear accelerometers. The system measures the precise path of the PIG during its traverse of the pipeline.   • This paper surveys past and state-of-the-art SLAM technologies. The standard methods for solving the SLAM problem are the Kalman filter, particle filter, graph, and bundle adjustment-based methods. Kalman filters such as EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) and UKF (Unscented Kalman Filter) have provided successful results for estimating the state of nonlinear systems and integrating various sensor information. However, traditional EKF-based methods suffer from the increase of computation burden as the number of features increases. To cope with this problem, particle filter-based SLAM approaches such as FastSLAM have been widely used. While particle filter-based methods can deal with a large number of features, the computation time still increases as the map grows. Graph-based SLAM methods have recently received considerable attention, and they can provide successful real-time SLAM results in large urban environments.
