Designing efficient routing protocols for a wireless sensor network with mobile sinks (mWSN) is a challenging task since the network topology and data paths change frequently as sink nodes move. In this paper, we design a novel lightweight reactive ring based routing protocol called R3, which removes the need of proactively maintaining data paths to mobile sinks as they move in the network. To achieve high packet delivery ratio and low transmission cost, R3 combines ring based forwarding and trail based forwarding together. To support efficient ring based forwarding, we build a ring based structure for a network in a way such that each node in the network can easily obtain its ring ID and virtual angle information. For this purpose, we artificially create a virtual hole in the central area of the network and accordingly find a shortest cycled path enclosing the hole, which serves as base ring and is used for generating the remaining ring based structure. We accordingly present the detailed design description for R3, which only requires each node to keep very limited routing information. We derive the communication overhead by ring based forwarding. Extensive simulation results show that R3 can achieve high routing performance as compared with existing work.

This paper presents a unique pressure sensor design for environmental applications. The design uses a new geometry for a multi bossed beam-membrane structure with a SOI (silicon-on-insulator) substrate and a mechanical transducer. The Intellisuite MEMS CAD design tool was used to build and analyze the structure with FEM (finite element modeling). The working principle of the multi bossed beam structure is explained. FEM calculations show that a sensing diaphragm with Mises stress can provide superior linear response compared to a stress-free diaphragm. These simulation results are validated by comparing the estimated deflection response. The results show that, the sensitivity is enhanced by using both the novel geometry and the SOI substrate.
Optimal design of a piezoelectric smart structure is studied for cabin noise control. A cubic shaped acoustic cavity with a flat plate which covers one side is taken as the problem. The sensor signal is returned to the actuator through a negative gain. The acoustic cavity is modeled using the modal approach which represents the pressure fields in the cavity as a sum of mode shapes of the cavity with unknown coefficients. By using orthogonality of the mode shapes of the cavity, finite element equation for the structure with the influence of the acoustic cavity is derived. The objective function is the average pressure at a certain region, so-called silent zone, in the cavity and the design variables are the locations and sizes of the piezoelectirc actuator and sensor. The optimal design is performed at several frequencies and the results show a remarkable noise reduction. To see the robustness of the optimally designed result, the configuration is used to examine the noise reduction at different frequencies. By adjusting the gain at each frequencies, it is possible to reduce the noise in comparison with the result when the actuator is not activated.
In controlling manipulators interacting with the external environment, an important role is played by the Force/Torque(F/T) sensors. Recently, a number of structures for F/T sensors have been proposed, and some criteria for their evaluation have been introduced. This paper presents a systematic analysis of F/T sensor at the design stage. A model of the F/T sensors, based on Stewart Platform structure, is developed on the basis of static and kinematic equation. The condition number defined by the kinematic velocity and force analysis of F/T sensor is used as a performance Index. Thus, 4 optimal structure factors of 6 D.O. F. F/T sensor are determined by using the condition number.

This paper describes the design processes and evaluation results of a small-sized six-axis force/torque sensor. The new six-axis force/torque sensor including S-type structure has been developed using a parallel plate structure as a basic sensing element. In order tominimize coupling errors, the location of strain gages has been determined based on the finite element analysis and the connections of strain gages have been made such that the bridge circuit with 4 strain gages becomes balanced. Several design modifications result in a similar strain sensitivity for six-axis forces and moments, and the reduced coupling errors of 2.6% FS between each forces and moments. Calibration test results show that the six-axis load cell developed which has light weight of 135g and the maximum capacities of 196 N in forces and 19.6 N.m in moments is estimated to be within 7.1% FS in coupling error.
We developed a glucose sensor using glucose dehydrogenase flavin adenine dinucleotide (GDH-FAD). The structure of the three-layer glucose sensor was simplified, in which a single-layer design was used to lower the unit cost, and GDH-FAD was used to increase the measurement reliability. GDH-FAD has less impact on the 20 interfering substances that affect blood glucose measurement, such as galactose and maltose compared to glucose oxidase (GOD), and is not affected by the oxygen saturation; therefore, it is possible to measure both arterial or venous blood and thus less susceptibility to hematocrit. In this study, we developed a single-layer glucose sensor strip with low hematocrit effect using the GDH-FAD enzyme, and measured and evaluated the performance.
A simple array of metal-insulator-metal capacitive elements was proposed for a potential application in humidity sensing platforms. We fabricated meso-scale sensors with different sizes(large-size: $2.7{\times}2.7mm^2$ ; mid-size: $1.5{\times}1.5mm^2$ ; small-size: $0.7{\times}0.7mm^2$) and characterized the performance of each design. Polyimide films were utilized as a humidity-sensitive layer. Capacitance changes of the polyimide layer were measured with respect to water absorption. The device showed sensitivity in the full range of relative humidity (RH) with excellent linearity(correlation coefficient > 0.994). This array structure exhibits unique advantages including easy fabrication process, high batch productivity, and high structural compatibility with various substrate materials. It is anticipated that this device structure will be potentially useful in unique applications including mapping spatial humidity variations over a meso-scale area and implementing flexible humidity sensing element arrays.
The capacitive sensor has a simple structure, compact size and low cost, but a small dynamic range. The small range is caused by use of gap variation. If the sensor takes area variation type with one plate moving horizontally, it can have a large measurable range. While the area variation has relatively low sensitivity, some studies have found methods to improve the sensitivity. Even though the methods are effective, parameters of the results are limited and 2 dimensional. This study provides more practical and 3 dimensional analysis and suggests relations between parameters. Using the results, the optimized design parameters of a high dynamic range capacitive sensor can be found.

This study proposes a novel optical sensor structure based on a refractometer combining a bend waveguide with an air trench. The optical sensor is a $1{\times}2$ splitter structure with a reference channel and a sensing channel. The reference channel has a straight waveguide. The sensing channel consists of a U-bend waveguide connecting four C-bends, and a trench structure to partially expose the core layer. The U-bend waveguide consists of one C-bend with the maximum optical loss and three C-bends with minimum losses. A trench provides a quantitative measurement environment and is aligned with the sidewall of the C-bend having the maximum loss. The intensity of the output power depends on the change in the refractive index of the measured material. The insertion loss of the proposed optical sensor changes from 3.7 dB to 59.1 dB when the refractive index changes from 1.3852 to 1.4452.
This paper describes the design of a two-axis force sensor with two step plate beams for measuring forces in an upper-limb rehabilitation robot. The two-axis force sensor is composed of a Fz force sensor and a Ty torque sensor. The Fz force sensor measures the force applied to a patient's arm pushed by a rehabilitation robot and the force of patient's arm. The Ty torque sensor measures the torque generated by a patient's arm motion in an emergency. The structure of sensor is composed of a force transmitting block, two step plate beams and two fixture blocks. The two-axis force sensor was designed using FEM (Finite Element Method), and manufactured using strain-gages. The characteristics test of the two-axis force sensor was carried out. as a test results, the interference error of the two-axis force sensor was less than 1.24%, the repeatability error of each sensor was less than 0.03%, and the non-linearity was less than 0.02%.
