  • New experimental devices and methods to measure shaft forces of ships are proposed in this paper. The strain gauge type six-component load cell was newly designed and installed to the end of the propeller shaft. The signals generated from the sensor in the propeller rotating are transferred to the new data amplifying and processing board on the shaft and the data is transmitted to the self-made wireless receiver. To find out the characteristics of shaft forces during port and starboard turning motions in sea trial, oblique and combined yaw maneuvering tests at straight, transient, maximum yaw rate, steady conditions were performed with the model ship installed the shaft forces measuring device using circular motion tester of Samsung Ship Model Basin. Characteristics of the measured shaft forces in model tests show quantitatively good agreement with the computed values obtained by the CFD programs using the measured wake data in oblique towing conditions. In the near future, It is hoped that the estimated shaft forces for a ship from this experimental method could be validated through comparison with directly measured values of a ship.

  • As a part of basic research to improve screen quality, which deteriorates when strain occurs within optical sheets in LCD modules for laptop computers, a measurement system is needed to analyze the influence of heat and moisture, which are the main factors causing the strain. It is assumed that the existence of an air gap less of than 0.5 mm inside the LCD module causes humid air from outside to permeate through the module. To investigate this phenomenon, in this study a thin printed circuit board (PCB) of compact sensors that measure temperature and humidity is inserted into LCD modules, and thus, the changes in temperature and humidity can be analyzed in real time. The results can be used as basic data for simulation of the deformation behavior and structural design of LCD modules in the future.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective web service software platform for remote monitoring and control. We removed the servlet container for better web service performance so as to improve the gSOAP processing which is an essential element of web service implementation. Furthermore, we designed the web service server/client software platform which can be applied to robot or ubiquitous sensor applications. For validation of this study we tested it by manufacturing robot hardware for monitoring control which combined tanks and sensors on a LDS4000 engine board mounted with a PXA270 processor. The practical excellence and the efficiency of the result of this study was validated by the comparison of gSOAP message exchange load between the web service client application and the conventional remote monitoring control technique through a web server.

  • Miniaturization of equipments which have wireless network function and sensor have changed utilization method of computer in daily life, and have contributed to development for ubiquitous computing environment. In this paper, we design camera control system based wireless mobile and web-environmental through which nurse, doctor and family of patient can share and observe the information on condition of patient in hospital. Besides, this camera control system makes it possible to integrate diverse equipments of hospital into one system, and to conduct remote control function which can be applied to the patient control system. It is impossible to control shooting direction of camera apparatus in a remote area for observing patient in a hospital room through general web camera. So in this paper, we showed new design; we attached step motor which can rotate 360 degrees to web camera, and the step motor can operate through control board. Besides, we developed application for two environments, mobile and web-based environment, which enables us to offer proper efficiency in accordance with condition of observer through observation of control and collected image data.

  • As increasing of using induction motors, the induction motors faults cause serious damage to the industry. Therefore to find out faults of induction motor is recognized as important problem awaiting solution. But to make matters worse, the faults of induction motors often progress through long time. It means that early diagnosis is very important. Many researches have been progressed and general method of diagnosis is using vibration sensor to diagnose fault of induction motor. However, although it is reliability technique, it demands high price and it is difficult to use. This paper presents an implementation of technique for fault diagnosis of induction motor using wavelet transform based stator current and it is composed with algorithm that decides whether fault existence or not using C++ based on windows software. The algorithm will be accomplished in real-time using current data acquisition board and PC automatically with Neural Network algorithm.

  • The present paper describes the design of a Solid State Telescope (SST) on board the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute satellite-1 (KASISat-1) consisting of four [TBD] nanosatellites. The SST will measure these radiation belt electrons from a low-Earth polar orbit satellite to study mechanisms related to the spatial resolution of electron precipitation, such as electron microbursts, and those related to the measurement of energy dispersion with a high temporal resolution in the sub-auroral regions. We performed a simulation to determine the sensor design of the SST using GEometry ANd Tracking 4 (GEANT4) simulations and the Bethe formula. The simulation was performed in the range of 100 ~ 400 keV considering that the electron, which is to be detected in the space environment. The SST is based on a silicon barrier detector and consists of two telescopes mounted on a satellite to observe the electrons moving along the geomagnetic field (pitch angle $0^{\circ}$) and the quasi-trapped electrons (pitch angle $90^{\circ}$) during observations. We determined the telescope design of the SST in view of previous measurements and the geometrical factor in the cylindrical geometry of Sullivan (1971). With a high spectral resolution of 16 channels over the 100 keV ~ 400 keV energy range, together with the pitch angle information, the designed SST will answer questions regarding the occurrence of microbursts and the interaction with energetic particles. The KASISat-1 is expected to be launched in the latter half of 2020.

  • Electro-Optical Camera(EOC) is the main payload of Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) with the mission of cartography to build up a digital map of Korean territory including Digital Terrain Elevation Map(DTEM). This instrument which comprises EOC Sensor Assembly and EOC Electronics Assembly produces the panchromatic images of 6.6 m GSD with a swath wider than 17 km by push-broom scanning and spacecraft body pointing in a visible range of wavelength, 510 ~ 730 nm. The high resolution panchromatic image is to be collected for 2 minutes during 98 minutes of orbit cycle covering about 800 km along ground track, over the mission lifetime of 3 years with the functions of programmable rain/offset and on-board image data storage. The image of 8 bit digitization, which is collected by a full reflective type F8.3 triplet without obscuration, is to be transmitted to Ground Station at a rate less than 25 Mbps. EOC was elaborated to have the performance which meets or surpasses its requirements of design phase. The spectral response the modulation transfer function, and the uniformity of all the 2592 pixel of CCD of EOC are illustrated as they were measured for the convenience of end-user. The spectral response was measured with respect to each gain setup of EOC and this is expected to give the capability of generating more accurate panchromatic image to the EOC data users. The modulation transfer function of EOC was measured as greater than 16% at Nyquist frequency over the entire field of view which exceeds its requirement of larger than 10%, The uniformity that shows the relative response of each pixel of CCD was measured at every pixel of the Focal Plane Array of EOC and is illustrated for the data processing.

  • In this paper, we implemented a real-time system which displays 3-dimensional (3D) stereoscopic image with stereo camera. The system consists of a set of stereo camera, FPGA board, and 3D stereoscopic LCD. Two CMOS image sensor were used for the stereo camera. FPGA which processes video data was designed with Verilog-HDL, and it can accommodate various resolutional videos. The stereoscopic image is configured by two methods which are side-by-side and up-down image configuration. After the left and right images are converted to the type for the stereoscopic display, they are stored into SDRAM. When the next frame is inputted into FPGA from two CMOS image sensors, the previous video data is output to the DA converter for displaying it. From this pipeline operation, the real-time operation is possible. After the proposed system was implemented into hardware, we verified that it operated exactly.

  • Internationally the load carrying capacity of bridges is decreasing due to material deterioration while at the same time increasing live loads mean that they are often exposed to stresses for which they were not designed. However there are limited resources available to ensure that these bridges are fit for purpose, meaning that new approaches to bridge maintenance are required that optimize both their service lives as well as maintenance costs. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide a tool that could support such an optimized maintenance program. In many situations WSNs have advantages over conventional wired monitoring systems in terms of installation time and cost. In order to evaluate the potential of these systems two WSNs were installed starting in July 2007 on the Humber Bridge and on a nearby approach bridge. As part of a corrosion prevention strategy, a relative humidity and temperature monitoring system was installed in the north anchorage chambers of the main suspension bridge where the main cables of the bridge are anchored into the foundation. This system allows the Bridgemaster to check whether the maximum relative humidity threshold, above which corrosion of the steel wires might occur, is not crossed. A second WSN which monitors aspects of deterioration on a reinforced concrete bridge located on the approach to the main suspension bridge was also installed. Though both systems have provided useful data to the owners, there are still challenges that must be overcome in terms of monitoring corrosion of steel, measuring live loading and data management before WSNs can become an effective tool for bridge managers.
