  • There ate various studies being conducted regarding efficient routing schemes to reduce energy consumption in the wireless sensor network, for which energy transformation is difficult. In terms of routing, many believe that the dynamic clustering technique is most efficient. The dynamic clustering technique consists of cluster construction and data transmission. Energy consumption for data transmission is proportional to $d^2$ and $d^4$ around the crossover area. This paper proposed algorithms for reducing energy consumption by improving efficiency of the cluster construction process that in the dynamic cluster mechanism and minimizing long-distance data transmission outside the crossover area. The proposed algorithms reduced energy consumption by implementing bridge clusters in the crossover area and decreasing the data transmission distance. The benefits of the proposed algorithms were confirmed through simulation experiments.

  • Monitoring and economical design of alternative energy generators such as wind turbines is becoming increasingly critical; however acquisition of the dynamic output data can be a time-consuming and costly process. In recent years, low-cost wireless sensors have emerged as an enabling technology for structural monitoring applications. In this study, wireless sensor networks are installed in three operational turbines in order to demonstrate their efficacy in this unique operational environment. The objectives of the first installation are to verify that vibrational (acceleration) data can be collected and transmitted within a turbine tower and that it is comparable to data collected using a traditional tethered system. In the second instrumentation, the wireless network includes strain gauges at the base of the structure. Also, data is collected regarding the performance of the wireless communication channels within the tower. In both turbines, collected wireless sensor data is used for off-line, output-only modal analysis of the ambiently (wind) excited turbine towers. The final installation is on a turbine with embedded braking capabilities within the nacelle to generate an "impulse-like" load at the top of the tower. This ability to apply such a load improves the modal analysis results obtained in cases where ambient excitation fails to be sufficiently broad-band or white. The improved loading allows for computation of true mode shapes, a necessary precursor to many conditional monitoring techniques.

  • Since being launched for ocean observing in 1997, the SeaWiFS sensor has supplied data on ocean chlorophyll distribution and environmental conditions of the atmosphere. Until now, a lot of SeaWiFS data have been archived and utilized for ocean monitoring and land observation. The SeaWiFS sensor has 1km spatial resolution, therefore, it is difficult to obtain data at the coastal zone. Since atmospheric correction algorithms at the coastal area have not been confirmed for chlorophyll algorithm, the ocean color data analysis for coastal zone is not common. In particular, domestic coastal areas have high suspended sediments concentrations and higher absorption influence of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), released from in-land, than open-sea. Thus, a useful algorithm for analysis of chlorophyll distribution in domestic coastal areas has not been developed. In this study, empirical algorithms, using data from the ocean color sensor, were developed for monitoring of chlorophyll distribution of coastal areas. In the process of the development of the algorithms, we can find that the red band (665nm) should be used for analyzing of domestic coastal areas near the Yellow Sea.

  • This paper presents a method to implement a low-cost driving simulator for developing autonomous driving algorithms. This is implemented by using GTA V, a physical engine-based commercial game software, containing a function to emulate output and data of various sensors for autonomous driving. For this, NF of Script Hook V is incorporated to acquire GT data by accessing internal data of the software engine, and then, various sensor data for autonomous driving are generated. We present an overall function of the developed driving simulator and perform a verification of individual functions. We explain the process of acquiring GT data via direct access to the internal memory of the game engine to build up an autonomous driving algorithm development environment. And, finally, an example applicable to artificial neural network training and performance evaluation by processing the emulated sensor output is included.

  • Recently, human based computing environment for supporting users to concentrate only user task without sensing other changes from users is being progressively researched and developed. But middleware deletes steream data processed for reducing process load of massive information from RFID sensor in this computing. So, this kind of middleware have problems when user demands probability or statistics needed for data warehousing or data mining and when user demands very important stream data repeatedly but already discarded in the middleware every former time. In this paper, we designs Sensor Middleware Architecture on Multi Level Spatial DBMS with Snapshot and manage repeatedly required stream datas to solve reusing problems of historical stream data in current middleware. This system uses disk databse that manages historical stream datas filtered in middleware for requiring services using historical stream information as data mining or data warehousing from user, and uses memory database that mamages highly reuseable data as a snapshot when stream data storaged in disk database has high reuse frequency from user. For the more, this system processes memory database management policy in a cycle to maintain high reusement and rapid service for users. Our paper system solves problems of repeated requirement of stream datas, or a policy decision service using historical stream data of current middleware. Also offers variant and rapid data services maintaining high data reusement of main memory snapshot datas.

  • There have been many autonomous robot calibration methods which form closed loop structures through the various attached sensors and mechanical fixtures. Single point calibration among them has been used for on-site calibration due to its convenience of implementation. The robot can reach a single point with infinitely many configurations so that single point calibration algorithm can be set up and easily implemented relative to the other methods. However, it is not still easy to drive the robots' sharp edge to its corresponding edge of the fixture. This is error-prone process. In this paper, we propose a 3 dimensional small displacement measuring sensor and a robot calibration algorithm based on this sensor. This method relieves the difficulty of matching two edges in the single point calibration and improves the resulting robot accuracy. Simulated study is carried out on a Hyundai HA06 robot to show the effectiveness of the proposed method over the single point calibration. And also, the resulting robot accuracy is compared with that from 3D laser tracker based calibration to show the dependency of robot accuracy on range of the workspace where the measurement data are collected.

  • FBG sensors are mainly used to measure deformation of structures such as tunnels, bridges and ships. In this paper, an interrogator of FBG sensors is developed and implemented to measure the status of structures. A developed interrogator includes CAN wired and Zigbee wireless communication for remote monitoring. Strain of structure is measured using shift of wavelength of reflected light from FBG sensor. A digital signal controller is used to process signals of a FBG sensor and transmit data for remote monitoring. As a result of experiment, developed interrogator is effective to measure deformation of structures.

  • This paper describes a real time reliable monitoring method and analysis system using wrist type oximeter for ubiquitous healthcare service based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard. Photoplethysmograph(PPG) is simple and cost effective technique to measure blood volume change. In order to obtain and monitor physiological body signals continuously, a small size and low power consumption wrist type oximeter is designed for the measurement of oxygen saturation of a patient unobtrusively. The measured data is transferred to a central PC or server computer by using wireless sensor nodes in wireless sensor network for storage and analysis purposes. LabVIEW server program is designed to monitor stress indicator from heart rate variability(HRV) and process the measured PPG to accelerated plethysmograph(APG) by appling second order derivatives in server PC. These experimental results demonstrate that APG can precisely describe the features of an individual's PPG and be used as estimation of vascular elasticity for blood circulation.

  • Sensor networks are often deployed in unattended environments, thus leaving these networks vulnerable to false data injection attacks in which an adversary injects forged reports into the network through compromised nodes. Such attacks by compromised sensors can cause not only false alarms but also the depletion of the finite amount of energy in a battery powered network. In order to reduce damage from these attacks, several security solutions have been proposed. Researchers have also proposed some techniques to increase the energy-efficiency of such security solutions. In this paper, we propose a CH(Cluster Header) selection algorithm to choose low power delivery method in sensor networks. The CNP(Contract Net Protocol), which is an approach to solve distribution problems, is applied to choose CHs for event sensing. As a result of employing CNP, the proposed method can prevent dropping of sensing reports with an insufficient number of message authentication codes during the forwarding process, and is efficient in terms of energy saving.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of set of sensor nodes. These sensor nodes are deployed in unattended area which are able to sense, process and transmit data to the base station (BS). One of the primary issues of WSN is energy efficiency. In many existing clustering approaches, initial centroids of cluster heads (CHs) are chosen randomly and they form unbalanced clusters, results more energy consumption. In this paper, an energy efficient clustering protocol to prevent unbalanced clusters based on firefly and midpoint algorithms called EEC-FM has been proposed, where midpoint algorithm is used for initial centroid of CHs selection and firefly is used for cluster formation. Using residual energy and Euclidean distance as the parameters for appropriate cluster formation of the proposed approach produces balanced clusters to eventually balance the load of CHs and improve the network lifetime. Simulation result shows that the proposed method outperforms LEACH-B, BPK-means, Park's approach, Mk-means, and EECPK-means with respect to balancing of clusters, energy efficiency and network lifetime parameters. Simulation result also demonstrate that the proposed approach, EEC-FM protocol is 45% better than LEACH-B, 17.8% better than BPK-means protocol, 12.5% better than Park's approach, 9.1% better than Mk-means, and 5.8% better than EECPK-means protocol with respect to the parameter half energy consumption (HEC).
