BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to develop a sodium index, which is a tool for estimating and assessing sodium intake easily and quickly, to assist in the prevention of various diseases induced by excess sodium intake in Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The 24-h urine collection and dietary behavior surveys were performed on 640 healthy people in 4 regions of South Korea, and an equation for the estimation of 24-h sodium intake was developed. The validity and reliability of the equation were verified with 200 adults. The sodium index was developed by converting the estimated sodium intake using the equation. Finally, the sodium intake status of 1,600 adults was assessed using the sodium index. RESULTS: The equation included sex, age, body mass index, eating habit and dietary behaviors related to sodium intake. In validity test of the equation, the mean bias between sodium intake using 24-h urine analysis and using the equation from the Bland-Altman plots was -1.5 mg/day. The sensitivity and specificity of the equation for estimation of sodium intake were 80.5% and 64.4%, respectively. In the reliability test of the equation, there was no significant difference between the first and second sodium intakes calculated using the equations, and Spearman's correlation coefficient between the 2 sodium intakes was 0.98. Sodium intake can be assessed as 'very moderate' for 75-100 on the sodium index, 'moderate' for 100-150, 'careful' for less than 75 or 150-200, and 'severe' for 250 or more. When sodium intake was assessed using the sodium index in 1,600 subjects, 54.3% and 24.3% of the subjects were assessed to be in the 'careful' and 'severe' categories, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Using a simple questionnaire, the sodium index can be used to monitor and assess sodium intake status, assisting in nutrition education and counseling in a large population.

A generalized method is presented for shape design sensitivity analysis of axisymmetric thermal conducting solids. The shape sensitivity formula of a general performance functional arising in shape optimal design problem is derived using the material derivative concept and the adjoint variable method. The method for deriving the formula is based on standard axisymmetric boundary integral equation formulation. It is then applied to obtain the sensitivity formulas for temperature and heat flux constraints imposed over a small segment of the boundary. To show the accuracy of the sensitivity analysis, numerical implementations are done for three examples. Sensitivities calculated by the presented method are compared with analytic sensitivities for two examples with analytic solutions, and compared with sensitivies by finite difference for a cooling fin example.

In the direct Gun Fire Control System(GFCS), it is essential to analyze the impact of the specific error components on the hit probability to optimize the system design. For this purpose the sensitivity equations of these error components are conveniently used, but it is too difficult to get those equations for the complex system with too many system elements. Normally sensitivity analysis is performed using numerical and statistical methods for the ground combat system. This method requires much computation, and makes us difficult to estimate the sensitivity change of specific error component intuitionally for the changing operating conditions. In this paper we propose a set of sensitivity equations deriving from closed form solution of the ballistic differential equation for the bullet. They are handy equations with very little computations, easy to understand the physical meaning of the related system variables. Some simulation results are shown to demonstrate usefulness of our algorithm for the 30mm projectile.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of rejection sensitivity on aggression and to determine the mediating role of self-esteem level and its stability. Data based on self-report questionnaires from a sample of 312(N=312) undergraduate and graduate students were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0, and the Amos 18.0. Results from the structural equation modeling indicated that rejection sensitivity had a negative impact on self-esteem level and a positive impact on self-esteem instability. Self-esteem level had a negative impact on aggression. Self-esteem instability had a positive impact on aggression. The effect of rejection sensitivity on aggression was fully mediated by self-esteem level and instability. Current findings add to the extent literature on the influence of rejection sensitivity on self-esteem level, self-esteem instability, and aggression. Implications of the present study, limitations of current study as well as suggestions for future study were also included in the discussion.

This study aimed to determine the optimal thickness of the active layer and scan mode for a flexible radiochromic film (F-RCF) based on the active lithium salt of pentacosa-10,12-diynoic acid (LiPCDA). F-RCFs of 90, 120, 140, and 170-㎛ thickness were fabricated using LiPCDA. Several pieces of the F-RCFs were exposed to doses ranging from 0 to 3 Gy. Transmission and reflection modes were used to scan the irradiated F-RCFs. Their dose-response curves were obtained using a second-order polynomial equation. Their sensitivity was evaluated for both scanning modes, and the uniformity of the batch was also examined. For both the transmission and reflection modes, the sensitivity increased as the film thickness increased. For the reflection mode, the dose response increased dramatically under 1 Gy. The value of the net optical density varied rapidly as the thickness of the film increased. However, the dose-response curves showed a supralinear-curve relationship at doses greater than 2 Gy. The sensitivity of the reflection scan at doses greater than 2 Gy was higher than that of the reflection scan within 0-2 Gy. The sensitivity steadily decreased with increasing doses, and the sensitivity of the two modes was within 0.1 to 0.2 at 2 Gy and was saturated beyond that. For the transmission scan, the sensitivity was approximately 0.2 at 3 Gy. For the intra-batch test result, the maximum net optical density difference of the intra-batch was 5.5% at 2 Gy and 7.4% at 0.2 Gy in the transmission and reflection scans, respectively. In the low-dose range, film thickness of more than 120-㎛ was proper in the transmission mode. In contrast, the transmission mode showed a better result compared to the reflection mode. Therefore, the proper scan mode should be selected according to the dose range.

In this study, the hydraulic model test was performed for the 3 vertical inlets of the Shinwol rainwater storage & drainage system that Seoul City plans to install, and the control discharge value actually measured was analyzed comparing to the value obtained using the theoretical control discharge equation suggested by Yu and Lee (2009). In the results, it was 66~69% compared to the value obtained from theoretical equation showing that the control discharge value according to the theoretical equation is calculated excessively. The sensitivity analysis by design factor was performed using 3 models conducted in this study and 15 hydraulic experiment models conducted in existing research Yu and Lee (2009). The sensitivity analysis of control discharge equation was performed by dividing $Q_{cm}/Q_{cp}$ into 3 ranges. The suggested equation considered only the influence on the tangential intake structure design factor B, z, ${\beta}$, e/B, so ${\theta}$, L considered complex influence suggested equation needed to be more improved.
Rocking response of rigid bodies with rectangular footprint, freely standing on horizontal rigid plane is studied analytically. Bodies are subjected to simulated single component of horizontal earthquakes. The effect of baseline correction, applied to simulated excitations, on the rocking response is first examined. The sensitiveness of rocking motion to the details of earthquakes and geometric properties of rigid bodies is investigated. Due to the demonstrated sensitivity of rocking response to these factors, prediction of rocking stability must be made in the framework of probability theory. Therefore, using a large number of simulated earthquakes, the effects of duration and shape of intensity function of simulated earthquakes on overturning probability of rigid bodies are studied. In the case when a rigid body is placed on any floor of a building, the corresponding probability is compared to that of a body placed on the ground. For this purpose, several shear frames are employed. Finally, the viability of the energy balance equation, which was introduced by Housner in 1963 and widely used by nuclear power industry to estimate the rocking stability of bodies, is evaluated. It is found that the equation is robust. Examples are also given to show how this equation can be used.

In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework to predict the interaction probability of proteins. The notion of domain combination and domain combination pair is newly introduced and the prediction model in the framework takes domain combination pair as a basic unit of protein interactions to overcome the limitations of the conventional domain pair based prediction systems. The framework largely consists of prediction preparation and service stages. In the prediction preparation stage, two appearance pro-bability matrices, which hold information on appearance frequencies of domain combination pairs in the interacting and non-interacting sets of protein pairs, are constructed. Based on the appearance probability matrix, a probability equation is devised. The equation maps a protein pair to a real number in the range of 0 to 1. Two distributions of interacting and non-interacting set of protein pairs are obtained using the equation. In the prediction service stage, the interaction probability of a protein pair is predicted using the distributions and the equation. The validity of the prediction model is evaluated fur the interacting set of protein pairs in Yeast organism and artificially generated non-interacting set of protein pairs. When 80% of the set of interacting protein pairs in DIP database are used as foaming set of interacting protein pairs, very high sensitivity(86%) and specificity(56%) are achieved within our framework.
The classical optimal control (COC) method has been widely used for linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problems of structural control. However, the equation of motion of the structure is incorporated into the optimization model as the constraint condition for the LQR problem, which needs to be solved through the Riccati equation under certain assumptions. In this study, an explicit optimal control (EOC) method is proposed based on the explicit time-domain method (ETDM). By use of the explicit formulation of structural responses, the LQR problem with the constraint of equation of motion can be transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem, and therefore the control law can be derived directly without solving the Riccati equation. To further optimize the weighting parameters adopted in the control law using the gradient-based optimization algorithm, the sensitivities of structural responses and control forces with respect to the weighting parameters are derived analytically based on the explicit expressions of dynamic responses of the controlled structure. Two numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility of the EOC method and the optimization scheme for weighting parameters involved in the control law.
Soft clay is widely spread in nature and encountered in geotechnical engineering applications. The creep property of soft clay greatly affects the long-term performance of its upper structures. Therefore, it is vital to establish a reasonable and practical creep constitutive model. In the study, two updated hyperbolic equations based on the volumetric creep and deviatoric creep are respectively proposed. Subsequently, three creep constitutive models based on different creep behavior, i.e., V-model (use volumetric creep equation), D-model (use deviatoric creep equation) and VD-model (use both volumetric and deviatoric creep equations) are developed and compared. From the aspect of prediction accuracy, both V-model and D-model show good agreements with experimental results, while the predictions of the VD-model are smaller than the experimental results. In terms of the parametric sensitivity, D-model and VD-model are lower sensitive to parameter M (the slope of the critical state line) than V-model. Therefore, the D-model which is developed by incorporating the updated deviatoric creep equation is suggested in engineering applications.
