Space-born remote sensing camera systems tend to be developed to have very high performances. They are developed to provide extremely small ground sample distance, wide swath width, and good MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) at the expense of big volume, massive weight, and big power consumption. Therefore, the camera system occupies relatively big portion of the satellite bus from the point of mass and volume. However, the camera systems for lunar exploration don't need to have such high performances. Instead, it should be versatile for various usages under various operating environments. It should be light and small and should consume small power. In order to be used for national program of lunar exploration, electro-optical versatile camera system, called MAEPLE (Multi-Application Electro-Optical Payload for Lunar Exploration), has been designed after the derivation of camera system requirements. A ground model of the camera system has been manufactured to identify and secure relevant key technologies. The ground model was mounted on an aircraft and checked if the basic design concept would be valid and versatile functions implemented on the camera system would worked properly. In this paper, results of design and functional test performed with the field campaigns and air-born imaging are introduced.
Recently, the improvement of on-board satellite sensors covering hyperspectral image sensors, high spatial resolution sensors provide data on earth in diverse aspect. The application field relating remotely sensed data also varies depending on what type of job one wants. The various resolution of sensors from low to extremely high is also available on the market with a user defined specific location. The expense to purchase remote sensed data is going down compare to the cost it need past few years ago in terms of research or private use. Now, the satellite remote sensed data is used on the field of forecasting, forestry, agriculture, urban reconstruction, geology, or other research field in order to extract meaningful information by applying special techniques of image processing. There are many image processing packages available worldwide and one common aspect is that they are expensive. There need to be a advanced satellite data processing package for people who can not afford commercial packages to apply special remote sensing techniques on their data and produce valued-added product. The study was carried out with the purpose of developing a special satellite data processing package which covers almost every satellite produced data with normal image processing functions and also special functions needed on specific research field with friendly graphical user interface (GUI). And for the people with any background of remote sensing with windows platform.
TM data, which have better resolution in spatial and spectral than MSS data, were used for this study, and several Image Processing Techniques (IPT) were examined for finding the best IPT to fit to lineament extraction and mineralized zone mapping. The Ryeongnam area was selected as test area, because the area is one of major mineralized zones in Korea and its hydrothermal alteration zone is wider and deeper than other areas. The spatial filtering method is most optimum one for limeament extraction: that is, the directional spatial filtering is most efficient to detect N-S, E-W direction lineaments on the image, and the high boost filtering can be applied for mapping all direction lineaments. The ratio method was selected for detecting altered zone. It is possible to make several tens combinations in ratio with 7 bands of TM data, but considering spectral characteristics of each band of TM to the geological meterials and vegetation, the band 4/band 3(A), band 5/band 7(B), and B/A ratio methods were chosen among them. The 5/7 ratio image did not show clearly the altered area due to noise from vegetation cover, so the 4/3 ratio imae was used for trying to decrease the effect of vegetation. As a result the B/A ratio image showed quite nicely the altered zone of the test area. In conclusion, the spatial filtering is the best image processing techniques for lineament mapping, and the B/A ratio image in TM data is useful for the mineralized zone mapping.
Look direction bias in a single look SAR image can often be misinterpreted in the geological application of radar data. This paper investigates digital processing techniques for SAR image data integration and compensation of the SAR data look direction bias. The two important approaches for reducing look direction bias and integration of multiple SAR data sets are (1) principal component analysis (PCA), and (2) wavelet transform(WT) integration techniques. These two methods were investigated and tested with the ERS-1 (VV-polarization) and CCRS*s airborne (HH-polarization) C-SAR image data sets recorded over the Sudbury test site, Canada. The PCA technique has been very effective for integration of more than two layers of digital image data. When there only two sets of SAR data are available, the PCA thchnique requires at least one more set of auxiliary data for proper rendition of the fine surface features. The WT processing approach of SAR data integration utilizes the property which decomposes images into approximated image ( low frequencies) characterizing the spatially large and relatively distinct structures, and detailed image (high frequencies) in which the information on detailed fine structures are preserved. The test results with the ERS-1and CCRS*s C-SAR data indicate that the new WT approach is more efficient and robust in enhancibng the fine details of the multiple SAR images than the PCA approach.
A wireless sensing system is designed for application to structural monitoring and damage detection applications. Embedded in the wireless monitoring module is a two-tier prediction model, the auto-regressive (AR) and the autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (ARX), used to obtain damage sensitive features of a structure. To validate the performance of the proposed wireless monitoring and damage detection system, two near full scale single-story RC-frames, with and without brick wall system, are instrumented with the wireless monitoring system for real time damage detection during shaking table tests. White noise and seismic ground motion records are applied to the base of the structure using a shaking table. Pattern classification methods are then adopted to classify the structure as damaged or undamaged using time series coefficients as entities of a damage-sensitive feature vector. The demonstration of the damage detection methodology is shown to be capable of identifying damage using a wireless structural monitoring system. The accuracy and sensitivity of the MEMS-based wireless sensors employed are also verified through comparison to data recorded using a traditional wired monitoring system.
The real-time reception and recording of down-link mission data from a satellite requires the highest reliability because the data lost in receiving process cannot be recovered. The data receiving and recording system has moved from a set of dedicated hardware and software components to commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components in order to reduce the system cost as well as to upgrade the system easily for handling other satellite data. The use of COTS hardware and middleware components prevents the system developer from correcting or modifying the internal operations of the COTS components, and hence, instant performance degradation of the COTS components which affects the reliable data acquisition must be covered by a software algorithm. This paper introduces the instant performance problem of a COTS data recording device which leads to the data loss in the real-time data reception and recording process. As a result, the requirement of the modification of the conventional data read/write technique is issued. In order to overcome the data loss problem due to the use of COTS components and the conventional software technique, a new algorithm called a software buffering technique is proposed. The experiments show that the application of the proposed technique results in reliable real-time reception and recording of high speed serial data.
$Au@TiO_2$ core-shell decorated rGO nanocomposite (NC) was prepared using a simple solvothermal method followed by heat treatment for gas sensor application. The crystal structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The $NO_2$ sensing response of the $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC was tested at operating temperatures from $250^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$, and was compared with those of the bare rGO and $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs. The $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC-based sensor showed a far higher response than the rGO or $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell based sensors, with the maximum response detected when the operating temperature was $400^{\circ}C$. This improved response was due to the high rGO gas absorption capability for $NO_2$ gas and the catalytic effect of $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs in oxidizing $NO_2$ to $NO_3$.
Since the successful launch of FORMOSAT -2 satellite by National Space Organization of Taiwan in May 2004, the Remote Sensing Instrument (RSI) on- board the FORMOSAT -2 has continuously acquired images at one panchromatic and four multi-spectral bands (http://www.nspo.org.tw). In general, the RSI performs well and receives high quality images which proved to be very useful for various applications. However, some RSI panchromatic products exhibit obvious trembling artifact that must be removed. Preliminary study reveals that the trembling artifact is caused by the instability of the spacecraft attitude. Though the magnitude of this artifact is actually less than half of a pixel, it affects the applicability of panchromatic products. A procedure removing this artifact is therefore needed for providing image products of consistent quality. Due to the nature of trembling artifact, it is impossible to describe the trembling amount by employing an analytic model. Relied only on image itself, an algorithm determining trembling amount and removing accordingly the trembling artifact is proposed. The algorithm consists of 3 stages. First, a cross-correlation based scheme is used to measure the relative shift between adjacent scan lines. Follows, the trembling amount is estimated from the measured value. For this purpose, the Fourier transform is utilized to characterize random shifts in frequency domain. An adaptive estimation method is then applied to deduce the approximate trembling amount. In the subsequent stage, image re-sampling operation is applied to restore the trembling-free product. Experimental results show that by applying the proposed algorithm, the unpleasant trembling artifact is no longer evident.
Interannual variability in the patterns of satellitederived pigment concentrations, sea-level height anomaly, sea surface temperature anomaly, and zonal wind anomaly are observed during the 2002-2003 El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o. The largest spatial extent of the phytoplankton bloom was recovery from El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o over the equatorial Pacific. The evolution towards a warm episode (El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o) started from spring of 2002 and continued during January 2003, while equatorial Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA) remained greater than +1$^{\circ}$C in the central equatorial Pacific. The EOS (Earth Observing System) and OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager) data are used for detection of dramatic changes in the patterns of pigment concentration during El Ni${\tilde{n}}$o.
