  • Application of WBAN technology in medical field facilitates the prevention of diseases by collecting the vital signs remotely. It also enables to prevent the accidental emergency situation in advance plus long-tem monitoring of patients with chronic diseases such as heart diseases, hypertension, or the elderly and infirm. For emergency patients, major vital signal information collected by the 'Sensing' should have the top priority and such information should be transferred as promptly as possible without competition. In addition, when an emergency occurs to a patient, a priority mechanism is necessitated for a urgent message to get through to the final destination. However, LR-WPAN IEEE 802.15.4 technology does not consider such emergency message handling features. To deal with aforementioned issues, the IEEE 802.15.4 super frame protocol structure has been designed for stable transfer of emergency information in WBAN environment in this study, and alternation to super frame structures have been made, allowing GTS(Guaranteed Time Slot) can be used first at CFP (Contention Free Period) by reserving the resources in advance and prioritize the emergency signals. NS-2 has been utilized for the performance test and analysis.

  • In this study, we fabricated a liquid light-guide-based radiation sensor with a LaBr3:Ce scintillator for remote gamma-ray spectroscopy. We acquired the energy spectra of Cs-137 and Co-60 using the proposed sensor, estimated the energy resolutions of the full energy peaks, and compared the scintillation light output variations. The major peaks of the radionuclides were observed in each result, and the estimated energy resolutions were similar to that of a general NaI(Tl) scintillation detector without a liquid light guide. Moreover, we showed the relationships of energy resolution and analog-to-digital channel regarding the number of photoelectrons produced and confirmed the effects of light guide length on remote gamma-ray spectroscopy. The proposed sensor is expected to be utilized to perform remote gamma-ray spectroscopy for distances of 3 m or more and would find application in many fields of nuclear facilities and industry.

  • As an aged population has increased in Korea, the number of patients with chronic disease has soared up as well. The rapid increase of the chronic disease triggers a need of new paradigm of healthcare. In terms of data transmission of healthcare system, a use of data-transmission protocol based on bluetooth could be dismal in application of healthcare due to its postponement of connection. On the contrary, WPAN is evaluated to be proper to support the application of healthcare in restricted geographic areas. In addition, the bluetooth, a base of the current wireless network, doesn't support a special mechanism to cope up with emergent patients because of its delayed connection among devices. Against this backdrop, this study aims to design an integrated interface of multi bio-sensing and suggest a measuring and monitering system for the patients with chronic illnesses by using Zigbee of WPAN as a sufficient bandwidth is anticipated owing to frequent deliveries of complicated biological signals.

  • A high-intensity ultrasound wave generates acoustic streaming and acoustic radiation forces when propagating through a medium. An acoustic radiation force generated in a three-dimensional space can produce a solid tactile sensation, delivering spatial information directly to the human skin. We placed 154 ultrasound transmit elements with a frequency of 40 kHz on a concave circular dish, and generated an acoustic radiation force at the focal point by transmitting the ultrasound wave. To feel the tactile sensation better, the transmit elements were excited by sine waves whose amplitude was modulated by a 60 Hz square wave. As an application of ultrasonic tactile sensing, a region where tactile sense is formed in the air is used as an indicator for the position of the hand. We confirmed the utility of ultrasonic tactile feedback by implementing a system that provides the number of fingers to a machine by receiving the shape of the hand at the focal point where the tactile sense is detected.

  • In ubiquitous sensor networks, sensor nodes can be compromised by an adversary since they are deployed in hostile environments. False sensing reports can be injected into the network through these compromised nodes, which may cause not only false alarms but also the depletion of limited energy resource in the network. In the security solutions for the filtering of false reports, the choice of a security threshold value which determines the security level is important. In the existing adaptive solutions, a newly determined threshold value is broadcasted to the whole nodes, so that extra energy resource may be consumed unnecessarily. In this paper, we propose an application of the recursive contract net protocol to determine the threshold value which can provide both energy efficiency and sufficient security level. To manage the network more efficiently, the network is hierarchically grouped, and the contract net protocol is applied to each group. Through the protocol, the threshold value determined by the base station using a fuzzy logic is applied only where the security attack occurs on.

  • Radiometric calibration is a prerequisite to quantitative remote sensing, and its accuracy has a direct impact on the reliability and accuracy of the quantitative application of remotely sensed data. This paper presents absolute radiometric calibration of the KOMPSAT-3 (KOrea Multi Purpose SATellite-3) and cross calibration using the Landsat-8 OLI (Operational Land Imager). Absolute radiometric calibration was performed using a reflectance-based method. Correlations between TOA (Top Of Atmosphere) radiances and the spectral band responses of the KOMPSAT-3 sensors in Goheung, South Korea, were significant for multispectral bands. A cross calibration method based on the Landsat-8 OLI was also used to assess the two sensors using near simultaneous image pairs over the Libya-4 PICS (Pseudo Invariant Calibration Sites). The spectral profile of the target was obtained from EO-1 (Earth Observing-1) Hyperion data over the Libya-4 PICS to derive the SBAF (Spectral Band Adjustment Factor). The results revealed that the TOA radiance of the KOMPSAT-3 agree with Landsat-8 within 5.14% for all bands after applying the SBAF. The radiometric coefficient presented here appears to be a good standard for maintaining the optical quality of the KOMPSAT-3.

  • Wireless sensor network technology is an emerging technology consisting of small, low power, and low cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. An ad-hoc home network system based embedded system for home environment monitoring was fabricated and tested. The wireless sensor node consists of a MCU, RF transceiver and sensors (temperature, humidity and light). Wireless sensor nodes run application software for data sampling and wireless communication, that was developed using 'nesC language' which runs on TinyOS. In our tests, acquired sensors data were monitored on 6.4" TFT-LCD of base-station through IEEE802.15.4 standard wireless communication. Also, the sensor data can be monitored by client user at the terminal PC to monitor environmental status of home in real time.

  • The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers eon the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analyses of the AE signal are used to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented

  • This paper describes link analysis on the processed data, HRIT (High Rate Information Transmission) and LRIT (Low Rate Information Transmission), for the preliminary design of interface between COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) and ground station. At the MODAC (MeteorologicaVOcean Data Application Center), the processed data are transmitted to user station via COMS with normalization and calibration by pre-processing of MI (Meteorological Imager) data. Due to consider satellite as radio relay, overall analysis containing uplink and downlink is needed. Specific link parameters can be obtained with using the outcomes of SRR (System Requirement Review) which was held on 13-14 June 2005, in Toulouse. From the relation between overall link margin and output power of HPA (High Power Amplifier) of MODAC, it is shown that even though the minimum power related with COMS receiving power range is transmitted at MODAC, the obtained link margin of HRIT could be above 3 dB at user station which antenna elevation angle is 10 degree.
