This study aims the development of a semi-analytic method for the parametric roll of large containerships advancing in longitudinal waves. A 1.5 Degree-of-Freedom(DOF) model is proposed to account the change of transverse stability induced by wave elevations and vertical motions (heave and pitch). By approximating the nonlinearity of restoring moment at large heel angles, the magnitude of roll amplitude is predicted as well as susceptibility check for parametric roll occurrence. In order to increase the accuracy of the prediction, the relationship between righting arm(GZ) and metacentric height(GM) is examined in the presence of incident waves, and then a new formula is proposed. Based on the linear approximation of the mean and first harmonic component of GM, the equation of parametric roll in irregular wave excitations is introduced, and the computational results of the proposed model are validated by comparing those of weakly nonlinear simulation based on an impulse-response-function method combined with strip theory. The present semi-analytic doesn’ t require heavy computational effort, so that it is very efficient particularly when numerous sea conditions for the analysis of parametric roll should be considered.

In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytic approach based on the generalized Taylor series for solving nonlinear differential equations of fractional order. Assuming the solution is expanded as the generalized Taylor series, the coefficients of the series can be computed by solving the corresponding recursive relation of the coefficients which is generated by the given problem. This method is called the generalized differential transform method(GDTM). In several literatures the standard GDTM was applied in each sub-domain to obtain an accurate approximation. As noticed in [19], however, a direct application of the GDTM in each sub-domain loses a term of memory which causes an inaccurate approximation. In this work, we derive a new recursive relation of the coefficients that reflects an effect of memory. Several illustrative examples are demonstrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. It is shown that the proposed method is robust and accurate for solving nonlinear differential equations of fractional order.

To improve the reliability of control systems, certain robustness to plant uncertainties and disturbance inputs is required in terms of well founded mathematical basis. Robust control theory was set up and developed until now from this motivation. In this field, H$_2$or H\ulcorner norm performance measures are frequently used nowadays. Moreover a mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner control problem is introduced to combine the merits of each measure since H$_2$control usually makes more sense for performance while H\ulcorner control is better for robustness to plant perturbations. However only some partial analytic solutions are developed to this problem under certain special cases at this time. In this paper, the mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner control problem is considered. The analytic(or semi-analytic) solutions of (sub)optimal mixed H$_2$/H\ulcorner state-feedback controller are derived for the scalar plant case and the multivariable plant case, respectively. An illustrative example is given to compare the proposed analytic solution with the existing numerical one.
To determine the flow stress of semi-solid materials, a new combined method has been studied by experimental and analytic technique in the current approach. Using backward extrusion experiment and its numerical analysis, the characterization scheme of semi-solid materials according to the change of initial solid volume fraction has been proposed. Because that solid volume fraction is sensitive to temperature change, it is required to precisely control the temperature setting. Model materials can guarantee the establishment of material characterization technique from the noise due to temperature change. Thus, clay mixed with bonded abrasives was used for experiment and the change of initial solid fraction was copied out through the variation of mixing ratio. Upper bound method was adapted to increase in efficiency of the calculation in numerical analysis and new kinematically admissible velocity field was employed to improve the accuracy of numerical solution. It is thought that the material characterization scheme proposed in this study can be applied to not only semi-solid materials, but also other materials that is difficult to obtain the simple stress state.

This paper deals with approximate integral solutions to the one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks. Temperature is assumed to be the form of Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which can be separated to two sets of cubic polynomials for each hot and cold side of thermal boundary layers. Proposed approximate integral solutions are compared to the previous works of the approximate analytic solutions and show reasonable agreement. The approach, however, has benefits in mathematical difficulties, complicated solution form and unstable convergence of series solution founded in the previous analytic solutions. Solutions for a semi-infinite region, which have simple closed form solutions, give close agreement to those for a finite region. Thermocline thickness is obtained in closed form and shows proportional behavior to the square root of time and inverse proportional behavior to the square root of flow rate.

In this study, a Volterra system for the variations of metacentric height (GM) in waves is employed to simulate the parametric roll phenomena of ships in head sea condition. Using the present Volterra system, the transfer function of each harmonic component in the GM variation is computed for different ship models, including mathematical models and a real containership, and the results are validated through the comparison with the values obtained using the direct calculations based on a weakly nonlinear time-domain method. Then, a semi-analytic approach employing a 1-degree of freedom equation for roll motion is developed to simulate the parametric roll motions in irregular waves. In the derived approach, the nonlinear and time-varying restoring forces in the waves are approximated using the Volterra system. Through simulations of the parametric roll for different sea states, the effects of the 1st and 2nd-order harmonic components of the variations in the occurrence and amplitude of the parametric roll motions are investigated. Because of the strong nonlinearities in the phenomena, a stochastic analysis is conducted to examine the statistical properties of the roll motions in consideration of the sensitivities and uncertainties in the computations.
Reusing the used pile has not yet been implemented due to the unpredictability of the bearing capacity evolution. This paper presents an analytic approach to estimate the sides shear setup after the dissipation of pore pressure. Long-term evolution of adjacent soil is simulated by viscoelastic-plastic constitutive model. Then, an innovative concept of quasi-overconsolidation is proposed to estimate the strength changes of surrounding soil. Total stress method (α method) is employed to evaluate the long term bearing capacity. Measured data of test piles in Louisiana and semi-logarithmic time function are cited to validate the effectiveness of the presented method. Comparisons illustrate that the presented approach gives a reasonably prediction of the side shear setup. Both the presented method and experiment show the shaft resistance increase by 30%-50%, and this highlight the potential benefit of piles reutilization.

The surface collective modes of thin K films deposited on Al(111) have been investigated using frequency dependent photoyield measurements and momentum resolved inelastic electron scattering. Jellium based theoretical calculations have predicted a richer set of features in the thin films than for the surface of a semi-infinite solid because there are th interference between two interfaces (substrate-film and film-vacuum) and heavy damping on the substrate. The use of an optical probe and electron scattering has allowed us to draw a more complete picture of the dynamic screening in thin films. The number, dispersion, damping and optical activity of the collective modes of the thin films have been measured as a function of K film thickness. New overlayer-induced excitations are observed : At qII=0, they correspond to the antisymmetric slab mode and the multipole surface plasmon. At finite qII=0, these modes undergo a transition towards the K multipole and monopole surface plasmons. With increasing coverage, the overlayer excitations turn into the collective modes of semi-infinite K. For a consistent interpretation of photoyield and electron energy loss spectra it is crucial to account for the non-analytic dispersion of the overlayer modes at small parallel wave vectors and for the finite angular resolution of the detector. The observed dispersions confirm predictions based on the time-dependent density functional approach.
During the hierarchical formation of large scale structure in the universe, the progressive collapse and merging of dark matter should inevitably drive shocks into the gas, with nonthermal particle acceleration as a natural consequence. Two topics in this regard are discussed, emphasizing what important things nonthermal phenomena may tell us about the structure formation (SF) process itself. 1. Inverse Compton gamma-rays from large scale SF shocks and non-gravitational effects, and the implications for probing the warm-hot intergalactic medium. We utilize a semi-analytic approach based on Monte Carlo merger trees that treats both merger and accretion shocks self-consistently. 2. Production of $^6Li$ by cosmic rays from SF shocks in the early Galaxy, and the implications for probing Galaxy formation and uncertain physics on sub-Galactic scales. Our new observations of metal-poor halo stars with the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph are highlighted.
