  • This study is about a semi-active quarter car simulation method including a MR(magneto-rheological) damper. The MR damper was modeled as Spencer model that can capture nonlinear and hysteretic behavior. The parameters of the Spencer model were extracted from a random excitation test and optimum treatment of the test data. Then, a suspension control algorithm based on Sky-hook theory was applied for the quarter car simulation. Also, an experiment was done using a quarter car simulator to confirm the simulation results with the Spencer MR damper model.

  • In this study, the flow path width (Gap Size), which is the flow path of fluid, was selected differently among various factors that determine the Ccontrol Force of MR damper, and the change of Control Force was confirmed accordingly. For this purpose, two MR dampers with a Gap Size of 1.0mm and 1.5mm were fabricated, respectively, and dynamic load experiments were conducted according to changes in applied current and vibration conditions The experimental results showed that the minimum Control Force was 3.2 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size, and the maximum Control Force was 2.3 times higher than 1.5mm in the case of 1.0mm Gap Size. In addition, the increased width of the Control Force according to applied current was 34N for Gap Size 1.0mm, and 12.7N for Gap Size 1.5mm. As the gap Size increased, the overall Control Force and the increase in the Control Force by the applied current decreased. Next, the dynamic range, which is a performance evaluation index of the semi-active Control device, was 2.3 on average under 1.0mm condition and 2.8 on average under 1.5mm condition, confirming the possibility of utilization as a semi-active Control device.

  • New insights into our previously proposed hybrid-type method for vibration control are highlighted in terms of energy analysis, such as the assessment of energy efficiency and system stability. The hybrid method improves the bang-bang active method by combining it with an energy-recycling approach. Its simple configuration and low energy-consumption property are quite suitable especially for isolated structures whose energy sources are strictly limited. The harmful influence of the external voltage is assessed, as well as its beneficial performance. We show a new chattering prevention approach that both harvests electrical energy from piezoelectric actuators and eliminates the displacement-offset of the equilibrium point of structures. The amount of energy consumption of the hybrid system is assessed qualitatively and is compared with other control systems. Experiments and numerical simulations conducted on a 10-bay truss can provide a thorough energy-efficiency evaluation of the hybrid suppression system having our energy-harvesting system.

  • The time delay in active and semi-active controls is an important research subject. Many researches on the time-delay control for deterministic systems have been made (Hu and Wang 2002, Yang et al. 1990, Abdel-Mooty and Roorda 1991, Pu 1998, Cai and Huang 2002), while the study on that for stochastic systems is very limited. The effects of the time delay on the control of nonlinear systems under Gaussian white noise excitations have been studied by Bilello et al. (2002). The controlled linear systems with deterministic and random time delay subjected to Gaussian white noise excitations have been treated by Grigoriu (1997). Recently, a stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems with time delay has been proposed (Liu and Zhu 2007). In the present paper, a stochastic optimal time-delay control method for stochastically excited nonlinear structural systems is proposed based on the stochastic averaging method for quasi Hamiltonian systems with time delay and the stochastic dynamical programming principle. An example of stochastically excited and controlled hysteretic column is given to illustrate the proposed control method.

  • In military vehicles moving over poor roads, severe vibration of the chassis can damage internal components. Currently, many studies have focused on active and semi-active suspensions to reduce the vibration of the chassis. In this study, a vibration reduction technique is suggested by applying a unique rotating suspension structure. SH-ADD, a type of modified Skyhook, was selected as a controller for vibration reduction. A random ISO class E road was selected as the driving road. The simulation was performed using ADAMS Control and Matlab Simulink. The control result was compared with the RMS acceleration with a focus on the cumulative fatigue of the internal equipment.

  • Active window system which can reduce the environmental noises, such as traffic noise and construction noise, from an open window into a room was proposed in the previous works. The key idea of the proposed active window system was that the control sources are approximately collocated with the primary noise source in terms of the acoustic power for global noise reduction throughout the interior room. Moreover, because it is important not to intrude into the living space in the building environment, no error sensors were used and an open-loop control method using control sources at the window frame and the reference sensors outside the room was used for the proposed system. The open-loop control gain was calculated by the interior room model assumed as the semi-infinite space, and the interior sound field was estimated by Rayleigh integral equation under the baffled window model assumption. However, windows with a finite thickness should were considered for the calculation of the open-loop control gain of the active window system since these are representative of most window cases. Therefore, the finite thickness window model based on the Sgard's model was derived and the open-loop control gain using the interior sound field estimated by that model was calculated for active window system. To compare the performance of these two models, a scale-model experiment was performed in an anechoic chamber according to noise source directions. Experimental results showed that the performance for the thickness window model is better than the baffled window model as the angle with respect to the perpendicular direction is larger.

  • The aim of this research is to develop a new method to use magnetorheological (MR) damper for vibration control. It is a new way to achieve the MR damper response without the need to have detailed constant parameters estimations. The methodology adopted in designing the control structure in this work is based on the experimental results. In order to investigate and understand the behaviour of an MR damper, an experiment is first conducted. Force-displacement and force-velocity responses with varying current have been established to model the MR damper. The force for upward and downward motions of the damper piston is found to be increasing with current and velocity. In cyclic motion, which is the combination of upward and downward motions of the piston, the force with hysteresis behaviour is seen to be increasing with current. In addition, the energy dissipated is also found to be linear with current. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, based on the established characteristics for a quarter car suspension model, has been adapted in this study. A fuzzy rule based PID controller (F-PID) is opted to achieve better response for a varying frequency input. The outcome of this study can be used in the modelling of MR damper and applied to control engineering. Moreover, the identified behaviour can help in further development of the MR damper technology.
