  • The present paper describes the application of an improved impression transfer vector method (Sakurai et al., 2007) to transform the three basic dimensions (Evaluation, Activity, and Potency) of higher-order impression. First, a set of shapes and surface textures of faces was represented by multi-dimensional vectors. Second, the variation among faces was coded in reduced parameters derived by applying principal component analysis. Third, a facial attribute along a given impression dimension was analyzed to select discriminative parameters from among principal components with higher sensitivity to impressions, and obtain an impression transfer vector. Finally, the parametric coordinates were changed by adding or subtracting the impression transfer vector and the image was manipulated so that its facial appearance clearly exhibits the transformed impression. A psychological rating experiment confirmed that the impression transfer vector modulated three dimensions of higher-order impression. We discussed the versatility of the impression transfer vector method.

  • The idia of modern product design is translated from the concept of functional importance as the basic function to that of emotional importance as the supplement function. In other words, the interests of the emotion in human performance side based on psychological factors of human are increased as well as the function in technical performance side based on physical factors of product. The standard emotional works for understanding the human's emotion are arranged in this paper. The standard emotional words are composed of words expressing the humaa's emotion. The adjectives adaptable to human's emotional works are collected from Korean dictionaries and arranged in the semantic differential(SD) scale. Next, the words with great marks evaluated by SD method are analyzed by factor analysis(FA) method and characterized as emotional words for understanding the human's emotion. The standard emotional words arranged in this paper are important because they are basic information for the development of product or technology as well as for the matter of emotional measurement technical development.

  • To clarify the motion characteristics of free-style Okinawan dance“Kachaasi”, first the subjective impression was quantitatively evaluated with semantic differential technique to cluster its types. Then, the contingency of joint rotation in shoulder, elbow and wrist joints was examined with multivariate autoregressive model. The time-series data of positions and angels of three joints were calculated according to the deforming conditions and shielding directions of the ring lights. As the results, in an excellent dancer, the motions of shoulder and elbow were highly synchronized and smoothly controlled. The low-frequency output of the shoulder and elbow were mutually interacted. Meanwhile, the wrist behaved independently of other joints' rotation.

  • This paper considers an a, pp.ication of one of the sensory engineering's techniques, extraction and categorization of the sensory words, to the product of cars. The fourty five (45) sensory words are extracted in three steps. Two groups, which are characterized by whether possessing a car or not and each group consisting of one hundred persons randomly selected from the twenties or thirties, are asked to answer the questionaires with the extracted words in the five-grade semantic differential. The factor analysis is used to categorize the extracted sensory words, and shows that the words can be grouped into four categories.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the physiological and psychological benefits of indoor garden to humans and to analyze the comparison according to Type A behavior pattern. The subjects included 18 male university students. Heart rate variation was used as a parameter of physiological assessment, and Semantic Differential (SD), Profile of Mood States-Brief (POMS), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used as tools for psychological evaluation. The participants were subjected to a psychological evaluation when they were present in a garden. As a result, the parasympathetic nervous activity was increased in the indoor garden. In the analysis of psychological evaluation, indoor garden improved the positive mood states and decreased negative feelings with significant changes only in Type A group. This study supported that indoor garden can have physiological and psychological relaxing effects, which could be more significant in Type A group than Type B.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors and variables which have significant effects on visual preference of urban stream in Taejon city and to suggest design & management information for urban stream. These works consist of two phases. First, we tested the Hyechon college students' visual preference for 36 spots of urban stream slide and then selected 10 spots slide by the Sturges' formula. Second, we analyzed factors and variables of visual preference of urban stream using the semantic differential scale method and then processed using descriptive analysis, factor analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The difference of landscape adjectives between the highest score of visual preference slide (No.10) and the lowest score of visual preference slide (No.2) was cleanness. 2. Three factors, the nature, the cleanness and the movement, were derived from the factor analysis. 3. Factors covering the visual preference of urban stream have been found to be the landscape of urban stream, the nature, the cleanness, and the movement. The visual preference factors of urban stream need to be considered in creating or restoring the ecological urban stream landscape.

  • This study is conducted to prove a hypothesis that Dokdo Island has "National Landscape Image," being a region with special meaning for Korean people. University students(51 Koreans and 44 foreigners) were surveyed on landscape images of Dokdo Island, and the statistical analysis of the survey responses was performed subsequently. The findings showed no substantial difference between the opinions of Korean men and women: Especially the photo of whole Dokdo was highly rated by Korean respondents as "considerably or very valuable and impressive, but also mysterious and symbolic at the same time." These are unique images of Dokdo Island, which are not found in responses to natural landscape of other national parks. Meanwhile, there were significant contrasts between the responses of Koreans and foreigners in every variables. Some landscape adjectives used as semantic differential scale demonstrate remarkable differences between Korean and foreign respondents, particularly on the photo of whole Dokdo: impressive(1.41), mysterious(1.25), symbolic (1.00), valuable(0.98), intimate(0.95), beautiful(0.93), interesting(0.85). There were substantial differences in responses between Korean and foreigners on two rock islands, which have names related with some national image: The Korean Peninsula Rock(0.57) and Independence Gate Rock(0.51). Finally, three primary factors drawn from the factor analysis were (1) national landscape image, (2) natural characteristics of Dokdo Island, and (3) spatiality of Dokdo Island.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method to analyze and quantitatively evaluate the impression of landscapes and soundscapes about traditional area of Chungnam Asan city in Korea. For this, we collated data about impression evaluation of Korean and Japanese students and, based on these result, we proved the validity and usefulness of the evaluation system that we proposed through this study. The research process conducted in this study as follows: first of all, we had selected five traditional places of interest in Asan City, and investigated various conditional elements of the area including soundscapes which is forming the landscape using video camera. And we made both Korean and Japanese students evaluate the impression for these videotaped landscape data through using the SD(semantic differential) method. And then, we quantified these qualitative data through applying the quantification theory and cluster analysis method to them. Though this process, we could obtain both data as a result derived by classifying each sample and categorizing levels of those impression evaluation. Because of totally difference between those two analyzing processes, which one is for sample classification and the other is for determining impression level, we could validate the usefulness of our evaluation system through conducting comparative analysis of results from both methods. Analysis showed that our novel evaluation system for landscape is effective and, in most part of the traditional landscape, Japanese students' responses are different far from the Korean students' responses.
