  • High-performance concrete, besides aggregate, cement, and water, incorporates supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, and chemical admixture, such as superplasticizer. Hence, it is a highly complex material and modeling its behavior represents a difficult task. This paper presents an evolutionary system for the prediction of high performance concrete strength. The proposed framework blends a recently developed version of genetic programming with a local search method. The resulting system enables us to build a model that produces an accurate estimation of the considered parameter. Experimental results show the suitability of the proposed system for the prediction of concrete strength. The proposed method produces a lower error with respect to the state-of-the art technique. The paper provides two contributions: from the point of view of the high performance concrete strength prediction, a system able to outperform existing state-of-the-art techniques is defined; from the machine learning perspective, this case study shows that including a local searcher in the geometric semantic genetic programming system can speed up the convergence of the search process.

  • This paper describes an algorithm for semantic video object tracking using semi automatic method. In the semi automatic method, a user specifies an object of interest at the first frame and then the specified object is to be tracked in the remaining frames. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps: object boundary projection, uncertain area extraction, and boundary refinement. The object boundary is projected from the previous frame to the current frame using the motion estimation. And uncertain areas are extracted via two modules: Me error-test and color similarity test. Then, from extracted uncertain areas, the exact object boundary is obtained by boundary refinement. The simulation results show that the proposed video object extraction method provides efficient tracking results for various video sequences compared to the previous methods.

  • Semantic web technology is the evolution of current World Wide Web including a machine-understandable knowledge database, ontology, it may be enable machine and people to work together. However, problems arise when we try to communicate with different data, which are annotated by different ontologies created by different people with different concepts. Thus, to communicate between ontologies, it needs to align between heterogeneous ontologies. When it is aligned between concept nodes of heterogeneous ontologies, one of main problems is a misalignment situation caused by false negative of automatic ontology mapping. So, in this paper, we present a new method to minimize the false negative error in the process of aligning concept nodes of different ontology.

  • Multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory mechanisms are largely divided into the phonological channel and the lexical-semantic channel. The former is called phonological short-term memory and the latter is called semantic short-term memory. Phonological short-term memory is further segmented into the phonological input buffer and the phonological output buffer. In this study, the language performance of each of three patients with similar levels of conduction aphasia was analyzed in terms of multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory. To this end, three patients with conduction aphasia were instructed to perform four different aspects of language tasks that are spontaneous speaking, repetition, spontaneous writing, and dictation in both word and sentence level. Moreover, the patients' phonological memories and semantic short-term memories were evaluated using digit span tests and verbal learning tests. As a result, the three subjects exhibited various types of performances and error responses in the four aspects of language tests, and the short-term memory tests also did not produce identical results. The language performance of three patients with conduction aphasia can be explained according to whether the defects occurred in the semantic short-term memory, phonological input buffer and/or phonological output buffer. In this study, the relations between language and multi-dimensional verbal short-term memory were discussed based on the results of language tests and short-term memory tests in patients with conduction aphasia.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of defining concrete and abstract nouns for the elderly. A total of 382 elderly participated in this study and they were classified into four age groups (i.e., over 55 to under 64, over 65 to under 74, over 75 to under 84, and over 85 year-old group). They performed the word definition task, composed of five concrete and five abstract nouns. The total scores and numbers and ratio of core/supplementary meanings were compared among four elderly groups. The frequency and ratio of error types were also examined. The results showed that all four groups had statistically significant differences in total scores, numbers and ratio of core and supplementary meaning of concrete noun definition task. In addition, abstract noun definition performances revealed group differences except the two groups (over 75 to under 84 and over 85-year-old group). The oldest group showed a sharp increase in error production. The highest ratio of error types were personal experience in over 55 to under 64-year-old group, and over 65 to under 74 year-old groups; and for the target word repetition in over 75 to under 84 year-old group; and no response in over 85 year-old group. In conclusion, both concrete and abstract word defining abilities had age-related deterioration. This decline results from impairment in spreading semantic knowledge within semantic network, which is vulnerable to aging. Characteristics of word definition for elderly can provide basic information to understand various neurolinguistic disorders associated with age.

  • In this paper, we propose a new adaptive dissolve detection method based on the analysis of a dissolve modeling error which is the difference between an ideally modeled dissolve curve with no correlation and an actual dissolve curve including a correlation. The proposed dissolve detection method consists of two steps. First, candidate dissolve regions are extracted using the characteristics of a downward convex parabola, then each candidate region is verified based oil the dissolve modeling error. If the dissolve modeling error for a candidate region is less than a threshold defined by the target modeling error with a target correlation, the candidate region is determined as a resolve region with a lower correlation than the target correlation. The threshold is adaptively determined based on the variances between the candidate regions and the target correlation. By considering the correlation between neighbor scenes, the proposed method is able to be a semantic scene-change detector. The proposed method was tested on various types of data and its performance proved to be more accurate and reliable regardless of variation of variance of test sequences when compared with other commonly use methods.

  • This paper is a study on context-sensitive spelling error correction and uses the Korean WordNet (KorLex)[1] that defines the relationship between words as a graph to improve the performance of the correction[2] based on the vector information of the word embedded in the correction technique. The Korean WordNet replaced WordNet[3] developed at Princeton University in the United States and was additionally constructed for Korean. In order to learn a semantic network in graph form or to use it for learned vector information, it is necessary to transform it into a vector form by embedding learning. For transformation, we list the nodes (limited number) in a line format like a sentence in a graph in the form of a network before the training input. One of the learning techniques that use this strategy is Deepwalk[4]. DeepWalk is used to learn graphs between words in the Korean WordNet. The graph embedding information is used in concatenation with the word vector information of the learned language model for correction, and the final correction word is determined by the cosine distance value between the vectors. In this paper, In order to test whether the information of graph embedding affects the improvement of the performance of context- sensitive spelling error correction, a confused word pair was constructed and tested from the perspective of Word Sense Disambiguation(WSD). In the experimental results, the average correction performance of all confused word pairs was improved by 2.24% compared to the baseline correction performance.

  • An equivalent schema matching among several different source schemas is very important for information integration or mining on the XML based World Wide Web. Finding most similar source schema corresponding mediated schema is a major bottleneck because of the arbitrary nesting property and hierarchical structures of XML DTD schemas. It is complex and both very labor intensive and error prune job. In this paper, we present the first complex matching of XML schema, i.e. XML DTD, inlining two dimensional DTD graph into flat feature values. The proposed method captures not only schematic information but also integrity constraints information of DTD to match different structured DTD. We show the integrity constraints based hierarchical schema matching is more semantic than the schema matching only to use schematic information and stored data.
