Korean Children's Knowledge of Reciprocal Sentences with Active and Stative Verbs

  • In this paper I investigate whether Korean-speaking children know the basic meaning of reciprocal anaphors like each other. I further examine whether they have knowledge of subtle differences in the interpretations of such anaphors depending on the two types of verbs. Fiengo and Lasnik (1973) pointed out a contrast between reciprocal sentences with active verbs and stative verbs. For example, a sentence with an active verb like The men in the room are hitting each other, has both a strong reciprocal reading (i.e., everyone of them in the room is hitting every other one) and a weak reciprocal reading (i.e., certain pairs of men are not engaged in the action of hitting each other). In contrast, a sentence with a stative verb like The men in the room know each other allows only a strong reciprocal reading (i.e., everyone of them know every other one). 16 Korean children and 15 Korean adults were tested using the Truth Value Judgment Task methodology. The results of the present study show that like English children, Korean children know the meaning of reciprocal anaphor, and that they also know the semantic difference of reciprocal sentences with active and stative verbs. Therefore, the present study strongly supports the claim that the semantic distinction of reciprocal sentences with active and stative verbs may be universal, and that children's ability of this semantic distinction might be innately given.

남성 의복착용자의 의복유형과 얼굴의 매력성이 인상에 미치는 영향(II) -직업관련특성 및 외모특성 추론을 중심으로- (The Effect of Clothing Type and Facial Attractiveness of Men Clothed on Impressions (ll))

  • The purpose of this study was 1) to investigate the effect of male clothing type and facial attractiveness on the subjects' inferences of occupational and appearance characteristics for the wearers. The subjects 'inferences of occupational and appearance characteristics for the wearers were measured by means of semantic-differential scales and open-ended questionnaires. The stimuli were composed of 18 color photographs which were made of 3 levels of facial attractiveness in combination with 6 types of clothing. The subjects were 216 male and 216 female university students. The results were as follows: First, the responses to the semantic-differential scales were factor analyzed to identify the underlying constructs of occupational characteristics. As the result, 4 factors were emerged. The first factor was interpreted to Appearance·Ability, the second, Individuality, the third, Dominance, and the fourth, Naivety. Second, the type of clothing influenced on all the 4 factors, and was more influencial than the facial attractiveness which influenced on the 3 factors except the Naivety factor. Third, There were differences perceptions for the wearers beteen subjects 'sex type; The male subjects perceived for the wearers with categorization more exactly than the female's. Fourth, there were accordances between free-association and inference in semantic-differential scales for the wearers.

'영끌' 보도에 대한 언어망 분석: 뉴스 정보원 다양성을 중심으로 (Semantic Network Analysis of 'Young-Kl(panic buying)': Focusing on News Source Diversity)

  • 이번 연구는 일간지, 경제지, 지상파 TV 등 총 11개의 언론 매체들이 보도한 '영끌' 관련 뉴스 기사를 분석하여 각 보도 프레임과 인용문 프레임을 파악하였다. 의미망 분석을 활용하여 매체별 인용문의 프레임, 정보원의 종류별 인용문 프레임 등을 비교, 분석하였고 인용된 정보원의 종류와 빈도, 그리고 각 프레임의 집중도 지수도 측정하였다. 분석 결과, 보도 프레임은 10개의 주제로 구성되었고 인용문의 프레임은 14개의 주제로 구성된 것으로 나타났다. 매체별 인용문과 정보원 종류별 인용문 프레임들 사이 차이는 관찰되었지만 인용 빈도가 높은 정부, 정치권, 비즈니스 정보원 프레임의 집중도가 상대적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 정보원의 수적 다양성만으로는 보도 프레임의 다양성을 확립하는 것이 제한적일 수 있다는 실증적 근거를 제시하였다.

의복디자인의 평가도구 개발을 위한 연구 -실루엣 평가를 중심으로- (A Study on the Development of a Clothing Design Evaluation Instrument)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the visual effects of clothing design. The specific objectives were: 1) to develop a clothing design evaluation instrument using semantic differential scales for the purpose of measuring visual responses with clothing design: 2) to identify the factor structure of the clothing design evaluation instrument: 3) to test the differences of perception to the clothing design depending on sex and knowledge about clothing design. The major findings were: 1. 37 pairs of descriptors of clothing form were found to include five factor dimensions (total variance:62.1%). Five major factors were found: attractiveness, practicability, elegance, comfort, hardness and softness. 2. for the visual evaluation of silhouettes, there were significant differences. H-line was explained by the simple image. A-line was explained by the comfortable image. V-line was explained by the mature and refined image. X-line was explained by the attractive and femine image and evaluated positively. 3. For the visual evaluation of observers, there were partly significant differences depending on sex and knowledge about clothing design in the observers' responses. But there were greater differences depending on sex than knowledge about clothing design in the observers' responses.

  • This paper discusses constraints on grammaticalization, a primarily diachronic process through which lexical elements take on grammatical functions. In particular, it will argue that two constraints on this process, namely Persistence and Lwering, explain the different distributional patterns of time-relationship adverbs in Japanese, Korean, English and German. Furthermore, it will suggest that the distributional difference between Japanese and Korean time-relationship adverbs is not an isolated phenomenon but is a reflection of the overall semantic typological differences between the two languages in the sense of Hawkins (1986).

정신지체아동과 일반아동의 부정하기 비교 (Comparison in Negation of the Children with Mental Retardation and Normal Children)

  • In this study, children with MR were compared with normal children in overall production rate and production types of six semantic categories of negation. For this purpose, 10 children with MR and another 10 language-age matched normal children were selected. The results of this study were as the following: First, the children with MR showed significantly low overall production rate, compared with normal children. Two groups demonstrated signifiant differences in denial, disability, ignorance, prohibition and rejection except nonexistence. Second, in production type, the children with MR tended to use more gestures, and in comparison, normal children used more 'mixed types'.

English Absolutes, Free Adjuncts, and WITH: A Constructional Analysis

  • English absolutes and free adjuncts, despite their abridged syntactic forms, function as full subordinating adverbial clauses, with their semantic roles varied according to the interpretation of the matrix clauses. This paper investigates how to represent the syntactic structures and semantic variability of absolutes and free adjuncts in a unified way, accounting for overlapping properties among various subtypes of the constructions on the one hand, and differences on the other. In the proposed analysis, the clausal properties of absolutes and free adjuncts are captured by the subject selecting property and the clausal meaning associated with a predicative phrase, thus not calling for a null verb or complementizer. In classifying and defining diverse subtypes of the constructions via type constraints, the present work also provides an account of different uses of with involved in absolutes and free adjuncts.

A QUALITATIVE METHOD TO ESTIMATE HSI DISPLAY COMPLEXITY

  • There is mounting evidence that complex computer system displays in control rooms contribute to cognitive complexity and, thus, to the probability of human error. Research shows that reaction time increases and response accuracy decreases as the number of elements in the display screen increase. However, in terms of supporting the control room operator, approaches focusing on addressing display complexity solely in terms of information density and its location and patterning, will fall short of delivering a properly designed interface. This paper argues that information complexity and semantic complexity are mandatory components when considering display complexity and that the addition of these concepts assists in understanding and resolving differences between designers and the preferences and performance of operators. This paper concludes that a number of simplified methods, when combined, can be used to estimate the impact that a particular display may have on the operator's ability to perform a function accurately and effectively. We present a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach and a method for complexity estimation.

웨딩드레스에 대한 시각적 감성 연구 (A Study on Visual Sensibility of Wedding Dress)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the visual sensibility of wedding dress. There are 28 kinds of costume samples from photographs in wedding dress magazines. They were divided into simple, accent and decorative design. The Semantic Differential method was used in this study to measure them. The semantic scale was composed of 20 pairs of adjective words. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, ANOVA, MDS and regression analysis. The results are as follow; 1. Factor analysis has extracted five factors which consist of the visual sensibility of wedding dress. The factors are High quality, Cuteness, Femininity, Decoration and Modernness. 2. There were significant differences in the visual sensibility of wedding dress and demographics.3. The evaluative dimensions of the visual sensibility of wedding dress were identified by Cute-Adult and Simple-Decorative. 4. Preference was related to what are wearing-desirable, chic, cute, natural and beautiful, etc., and the wearing desire was related to what are favorite, lively, chic, special and gracious, etc. The noble sensibility was related to what are elegant, cute, feminine and chic, etc.

가상 비서와 스마트 스피커에 대한 인식과 기대: 의미 연결망 분석과 감성분석을 중심으로 (Perception of Virtual Assistant and Smart Speaker: Semantic Network Analysis and Sentiment Analysis)

  • 인공지능과 음성인식을 기반으로 한 스마트 디바이스의 장점이 부각되면서, 가상 비서(Virtual Assistant)가 인기를 끌고 있다. 가상 비서는 스마트 스피커를 통해 사용자 경험을 제공하며, 일반 소비자들이 가장 사용하기 쉬운 IoT 디바이스로 평가받고 있다. 본 연구는 주요 가상 비서브랜드의 음성인식 플랫폼과 디바이스에 대한 사람들의 인식에 차이가 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해, 트위터에서 가상비서 서비스를 하는 세 기업의 총 6가지 키워드를 포함한 트윗을 수집했다. 수집한 데이터는 의미 연결망 분석 기법(Semantic network analysis)을 적용해 키워드에 대한 사람들의 인식을 분석했다. 추가로 LIWC 감성분석을 통해 사람들의 긍정/부정적 반응을 분석했다. 분석 결과 사람들은 각 키워드에 대한 반응이 다른 것으로 나타났다. 주로 Virtual Assistant가 제공하는 기능과 서비스에 대한 기대와 사용성에 대한 내용이었다. 또한 대부분의 키워드에 긍정적 반응을 보였다.
