Purpose: This study was done to examine whether depression, self-esteem, and social support influence suicidal ideation among college students. Methods: Using a correlation study design, participants were recruited from two universities selected by convenience sampling. Data were collected from June 1, to August 31, 2014 from the 206 participants included in the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS / Win 18.0. Results: There was a significant correlation between depression, self esteem, social support, and suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was negatively correlated with self-esteem (r=-.64, p<.001) and social support (r=-.45, p<.001), while, suicidal ideation showed a positive correlation with depression (r=.69, p<.001). The significant predictors related to suicidal ideation were depression, self-esteem, and social support. Conclusion: Findings indicate that sensitively assessing depression in college students and efforts to reduce depression can reduce the risk of suicide. Self-esteem and social support of college students are also important resources for suicide prevention.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate self-esteem, family function, and social support which might influence stress in college students. Method: Data were collected from October 15 to December 20, 2007 when 411 students completed a questionnaire which included Self-esteem scale, Family APGAR questionnaire, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and Global Assessment of Recent Stress scale. The collected data was analyzed with the SPSS Win 14.0 statistics program. Results: The scores for stress showed significantly negative correlations with the scores for self-esteem (r= -.394, p<.001), family function (r= -.215, p<.001), and social support (r= -.249, p<.001). Self-esteem, family function and social support by friends were significant predictors and accounted for 18.5% of the variance in stress in undergraduate students. Conclusion: Future stress management programs for undergraduate students should be developed to reinforce self-esteem, family function and social support by friends.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the correlation between uncertainty, self efficacy, social support, and self-care performance among liver transplant recipients. Methods: Participants comprised 111 liver transplant recipients who visited the outpatient clinic at the hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery department of a hospital in D city. Data were collected from September to October 2021 using self-report questionnaires, and were analyzed by the SPSS 23.0 program. Results: Self-care performance was correlated with uncertainty (r=-.31, p=.001), self efficacy (r=.22, p=.023), and social support (r=.38, p<.001). Conclusion: To improve self-care performance in liver transplant recipients, it is necessary to develop nursing interventions that can reduce uncertainty and enhance self efficacy and social support.
Purpose; This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy, family support and health promotion behavior of the elderly in a community. Method: The sample consisted of 208 elderly and data was collected from November 18 to December 21, 2002. The instrument of this study was a structured questionnaire including health promoting behaviors, self-efficacy, family support, general characteristics. Analysis of the data was done by use of descriptive statistics, t or F, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Stepwise multiple regression. Results: 1. The general characteristics related to health promoting behavior were gender, family structure, education level and monthly pocket money. 2. The general characteristics related to self efficacy were gender, age, family structure, education level, religion and monthly pocket money. 3. The general characteristics did not affect family support. 4. Health promoting behavior score was the highest in the interpersonal support (2.72) and in order was nutrition(2.65), stress management(2.31), self actualization(2.30), exercise(2.05), health responsibility(1.86). 5. There was a significantly high correlation between health promoting behavior and self efficacy(r= .605, p= .000), and family support(r= .500, p= .000) and between self-efficacy and family support were correlated relatively high(r= .498, p= .000) 6. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor of health promotion behavior in elderly was self-efficacy (39.6%). A combination of self-efficacy, family support, monthly pocket money, education level and present illness status explained 48.5% of the variance for health promoting behavior. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that self-efficacy and family support are very important variables in explaining the health promoting behaviors in elderly. Therefore, these variables should be considered in nursing intervention development and education, especially, self-efficacy improving programs that considered exercise and health responsibility are expected to effect the health promoting behavior in elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among perceived health status, exercise self-efficacy, social support, and exercise compliance and factors influencing exercise compliance in older adults in an area. Methods: The sample consisted of 154 older adults who attended a senior welfare center in D metropolitan city. Data were collected from the 25th to the 31th of January in 2012. Results: The mean score for perceived health status was 2.94, 911.69 for exercise self-efficacy, 46.99 for social support, and 6.83 for exercise compliance. The highest score on social support domains was emotional support, followed by self-esteem, material, and informational support. There were significant correlations between perceived health status and exercise self-efficacy, between perceived health status and exercise compliance, between exercise self-efficacy and social support, between exercise self-efficacy and exercise compliance, between emotional support and exercise compliance. Findings of multiple regression indicated that only exercise self-efficacy significantly explained exercise compliance. Conclusion: Health care providers may need to develop various intervention program to promote exercise self-efficacy in order to influence on exercise compliance and adherence among older adults.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on anxiety of patients who had received hemopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT). Method: A total of 81 patients who had undergone a HSCT at a university hospital were recruited from July of 2001 to June of 2002. They were asked to complete questionnaires about anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. Result: The mean score of anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support was 41.9, 3.0, 4.6, 7.6 and 7.3, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between anxiety and self-esteem. Self-esteem was positively correlated with family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. The major variable that influenced anxiety was the self-esteem, explaining 25.4% of the anxiety. Conclusion: On the basis of these results, it is necessary for HSCT patients to develop a nursing intervention for the enhancement of self esteem. Also, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support should be considered as a main support system in the nursing strategy for improving the quality of life of patients undergone HSCT.
This study was designed to identify the relation between the Perceived Social Support and the Self-care Agency of high school students in a rural area. The subjects for this study were 250 students living in Chonnam province: among first grade, second grade and third grade students were 98, 89 and 63 respectively. The data were collected during the period from April 2 to 4, 2001. The instruments used in this study were the Generally Perceived Social Support Scale developed by Park, J. W.(1985) and Self-Care Agency Questionnarie developed by Deneys(1981). The data were analyzed by descriptive statistic, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation using the SAS PC+ Program. The results were as follows: 1. The mean score of the Perceived Social Support was 3.19. 2. The mean score of the Self-care Agency was 2.65. 3. There was a significant differences in school year(F=3.11, p=.046), educational level of the father(F=3.41, p=.035) that of the mother(F=4.07, p=.019), and economic status(F=8.99, p=.000), school performance(F=16.37, p=.000) from Perceived Social Support between general characteristics. 4. There was a significant differences in economic status(F=4.55, p=.004), school performance(F=6.72, p=.002) from self care agency between general characteristics. 5. The relation between the score of the Perceived Social Support and Self-care Agency was significant(r=.49, p=.0001). The relation between the score of the direct Perceived Social Support and Self-care Agency was significant(r=.50, p=.0001) and the relation between the score of the indirect Perceived Social Support and Self-care Agency was also significant(r=.40, p=.0001). In conclusion, it was found that higher score of the Social Support was a higher level of the Self-care Agency, especially the direct Perceived Social Support. The score of the Social Support and Self-care Agency was significantly differentiated according to economic status and school performance.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the influencing factors on oral health related self-efficacy and social support in high school students. Methods: The subjects were 750 high school students in Jeonbuk by convenience sampling. A self-reported questionnaire was completed from April 3 to June 4, 2013. Except incomplete answers, 589 data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program for t-test, ANOVA, post hoc Scheffe test, and multiple regression analysis. The questionnaire consisted 6 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 8 questions of oral health related self-efficacy, and 8 questions of oral health related social support. The instrument for self-efficacy was developed by Sherer and Maddux and measured by Likert 4 scale. Interpersonal Support Evaluation List(ISEL) was developed by Cohen and Hoberman and revised by Suh as oral health related social support in high school students, and measured by Liker 4 scale. Cronbach's alpha in self-efficacy was 0.768 and that in social support was 0.772. Results: The good oral health behavior in the high school students was closely related ro self-efficacy and social support. Higher self-efficacy and social support could make the students practice good oral behavior. Conclusions: Higher self-efficacy and social support can influence on the good oral health behavior in high school students. So it is very important to provide the continuous oral health education that can enhance self-efficacy and health promotion.

This study examined the structural relationship between life stress perceived by university students and their gambling behaviors through their self-control and family support. For this, it conducted the questionnaire on life stress, self-control, family support and gambling behavior with 387 university students attending universities in Gwangju city and analyzed the data collected. The results of the analysis were described below. As a result of analyzing the direct effects of life stress on gambling behavior, self-control and family support, it was found that the life stress had the positive effect on gambling behavior and it meant that when the university students couldn't cope with the life stress effectively and felt frustrated, they were likely to be involved in gambling behavior to escape from their helplessness. In addition, as a result of analyzing the direct effects of life stress on self-control and family support, it was found that life stress had negative effect on self-control and family support. The more experiences of life stress they had, the lower their self-control was. As their life stress was higher, they didn't make supportive relationship network with family members. As a result of mediating effects, it was shown that self-control and family support played the partially negative roles in the relationship between life stress and gambling behavior and it suggested that as the life stress was perceived less, self-control was performed better and as family support was higher, gambling behavior was effectively reduced. These results of the research suggested that life stress could be handled actively through self-control and family support and development and distribution of the program to cope with life stress could minimize the gambling behaviors. Also the limitations of this study and necessity of further studies were discussed.
This study was undertaken in order to examine the relationship of self-efficacy, control, perceived health status. self-esteem, social support, and demographic characteristics to health promoting lifestyle of college students, and to determine factors affecting health promoting lifestyle of college students. The subjects were 92 students of one university in Taejon. The instruments used for this study were a survey of general characteristics, health promoting lifestyle(44 items), self-efficacy (28 items), self-esteem(10 items). control(8 items), perceived heath status(1 item), and social support(12 items). Analysis of data was done by use of mean, percentage, t-test. ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise regression with SAS program. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The average item score for the health promoting lifestyles was low at 2.30. In the sub-categories, the highest degree of performance was interpersonal support(2.90), and the lowest degree was exercise(1.67). 2) Male students showed a significant higher score in exercise subscale than female students. Students who had more income had higher scores in self actualization subscale. Students who's family had experienced severe disease had higher scores in health responsibility and interpersonal support subscale. Students who had experienced exercise had higher scores in total health promoting lifestyle, exercise, interpersonal support, and stress management subscale. 3) Significant correlation between perceived health status and self-efficacy, perceived health status and self-esteem, control and self-efficacy, control and self-esteem, control and social support, self-esteem and self-efficacy was found. 4) Self-efficacy and control revealed significant correlations with total health promoting lifestyle and all subscales of health promoting lifestyle except self actualization, A significant correlation between perceived health status and self actualization subscale was found. Self-esteem revealed significant correlations only with self actualization and interpersonal support subscale. 5) Significant correlations were found between most of the subscales of total health promoting lifestyle. 6) Self-efficacy was the highest factor predicting health promoting lifestyles of college students (30.55%). Self-efficacy and control accounted for 36.55% in health promoting lifestyle of college students.
