Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate factors affecting social problem-solving ability of alcohol-dependent patients with a focus on gender differences. Methods: Participants were 250 alcohol-dependent people(men 140, women 110) who were living in B, G and Y cities. Data were collected from January 10 to March 31, 2017 using self-report questionnaires. Abstinence self-efficacy, alcohol insight, unconditional self-acceptance, and social problem-solving ability were investigated. For data analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression were employed. Results: Factors influencing social problem-solving ability for men were unconditional self-acceptance and age. The explanatory power was 28%. Factors influencing social problem-solving ability for women were unconditional self-acceptance, stress, religiousness, age, occupation and abstinence self-efficacy and the explanatory power was 72%. Unconditional self-acceptance and age were significant variables of social problem-solving ability in both men and women. Stress, occupation, religiousness and abstinence self-efficacy were significantly associated with social problem-solving ability in women but not in men. Conclusion: The results suggest that it is necessary to consider gender characteristics in order to develop effective management programs for social problem-solving ability in alcohol-dependent people.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of perceived self-esteem and maternal caretaking behaviors of college students. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires in which maternal caretaking behaviors and self-esteem were included. This study chose 293 students studying at universities and a college in Busan and a college in Taebaek as subjects. The data were analyzed by the SPSS program. The results were as follows ; 1. The mean score of the subjects on self-esteem was 29.6(Range=10-40). 2. The mean score of the subjects on maternal caretaking behaviors was 82.7(Range=22-110). The mean scores of subsets on the maternal caretaking behaviors were as follows ; achievement(4.03), affection(3.86), rational direction(3.79), active participation (3.60), consistent restriction(3.59), authoritative control(3.49) and over-protection(3.28). 3. The level of maternal caretaking behavior revealed some difference according to the students' gender and their mothers' academic career. 4. The level of self-esteem was positively correlated to the level of maternal caretaking behaviors in subjects. In conclusion, the above findings indicate that mothers' positive pattern of maternal caretaking behaviors are closely related to the students' higher self-esteem.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify and prioritize the content needs of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) for developing self-management mobile applications. Methods: A total of 126 participants with OA were recruited from two orthopedic hospitals. They completed the self-report questionnaires after providing written informed consent. The Borich needs assessment model was used to assess the perceived level of competence and perceived level of importance regarding 21 items for self-management of OA. The collected data were weighted and ranked in order of priority. Results: The top five content items needed by OA patients were 'How to avoid excessive use of the joints' (15.03); 'Lifestyle tips on the prevention and management of arthritis' (13.69); 'Exercise types and procedures for OA' (12.54); 'Good and bad exercises for the joints' (9.80); and 'Precautions for exercise (duration, frequency, safety)' (8.88). Need rankings related to causes and treatment of OA were relatively low. Conclusion: OA patients requested self-management competencies that should be practiced in daily activities to reduce the discomfort. The results of this study have practical implications for defining the content of self-management applications for patients with OA. Based on the results, developing a self-management intervention program for OA patients using a mobile is recommended.
Purpose: In order to assess the effects of smoking cessation counseling provided by a public health center in terms of smoking temptation, smoking cessation self-efficacy, and satisfaction with smoking cessation counseling, and also to provide baseline data for the improvement of smoking cessation counseling programs. Methods: A total of 52 current and former smokers who utilized smoking cessation counseling provided by the health center at least once participated in this study. Using a self-report survey method, data were collected in November 2005. Results: The mean age and duration of smoking of the participants were 49 and 28 years, respectively. Seventy-one percent had experienced smoking cessation trials prior to using the counseling services, and most of the participants had utilized smoking cessation counseling less than 5 times. Mean scores of temptation, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with counseling were $3.39{\pm}0.75,\;3.80{\pm}0.66$, and $4.38{\pm}0.55$ (range,1-5), respectively. The participants were largely vulnerable to smoking temptations under conditions of anxiety or stress. The duration of counseling was associated negatively with smoking temptation, but was associated positively with self-efficacy. Conclusion: To help adopt and maintain smoking cessation, smoking cessation counseling should emphasize methods for coping with smoking temptations and to increase smoking cessation self-efficacy in various tempting situations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the mental health promotion program based on Positive Psychology for adolescents with problem behavior. Methods: The study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Eligible participants were first grade students in two high schools in K Province. The inclusion criteria for the study were those with scores in the upper 15% on the Korean Youth Self-Report. A total of 74 participants were assigned to an 8-session program (n=38) or to a control (n=36) group. The outcome variables were psychological well-being, depression, and self-esteem. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in demographic variables or outcome variables, except self-esteem, between the two groups at the baseline. The experimental group had higher mean scores on psychological well-being and self-esteem and a lower mean score on depression. There were significant differences in psychological well-being (t=3.45, p=.001), self-esteem (F=5.45, p=.022), and depression (t=-2.80, p=.007) between the two groups. Conclusion: The mental health promotion program based on Positive Psychology was effective in decreasing depression as well as improving psychological well-being and self-esteem for adolescents with problem behavior. This study contributes to suggesting a framework for promoting mental health for high school students with problem behavior.
Objectives : This study investigated the influence of traumatic experience on the ego identity, self-esteem, and general psychopathology of adolescent North Korean refugees. Methods : The participants were 146 adolescents North Korean refugees who attended H High School for North Korean refugees. We divided the subjects into two groups according to the severity of their traumatic experience : the more-traumatic-experience group and the less-traumatic-experience group. Each group performed self-report assessments including an assessment to reveal demographic characteristics, the Traumatic Experiences Scale for North Korean Defectors, the Scale for Ego identity, the Scale for Self-esteem and the Symptom Check-90-Revision (SCL-90-R). Statistical analysis of t-test and multiple regression utilized SPSS 12.0 for Window for comparison between more-traumatic-experience group and less-traumatic-experience group. Results : The prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder among adolescents North Korean refugees was 37%. The factor with the greatest influence on ego identity was length of time living in South Korea, while, for self-esteem the most influential factor was perception of health. The more-traumatic-experience group had lower self-esteem scores on some subscales of the Scale for Ego identity. They had higher scores on all SCL-90-R subscales than the less-traumatic-experience group. Conclusion : Adolescent North Korean refugees experienced high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder. The more traumatic-experience-group had lower self esteem and poorer ego identity and mental health than the less-traumatic-experience group.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the application of the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) in nursing with regard to the learning process and learning outcomes. Method: PBL modules were provided to the students so that they could identify the nursing problems related to nutrition, regulation, and elimination, and implement appropriate nursing interventions according to the problems. PBL was also used to develop ability to use self-evaluation for nursing intervention outcomes. The modules were developed by the authors for the course, Nursing 1(3 credits) at Y university, and used during one semester, March to June 2003. Evaluation of the learning process and learning outcomes was done by self-report questionnaires and a semi-structured self -report developed by the authors. Result: The PBL evaluation included role of the facilitators, group work process, and self-directed learning attitude. The students evaluated the facilitator's role positively in fostering positive interactions and cooperative study among students and stimulating students to apply various problem-solving strategies. Students evaluated their own group work performances as a good opportunity to improve their group work participation, contribution, cooperation, and leadership through the PBL session. Their responsibility for their own learning and develop self-directed learning attitudes to connect present learning to long-term goals. Conclusion: Critical thinking, problem solving skills, self-directed learning and group work accomplishments in undergraduate student nurses were fostered and improved through the PBL program.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gambling environment factors (being around gambling, gambling ad access) and irrational gambling belief on the gambling behaviors of college students who experienced sports gambling. Methods : Study participants were 240 college students with sports gambling experience. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and analyzed with SPSS 18.0. Results : Being around gambling and sports gambling ad access have a statistically significant effect on irrational gambling beliefs, which have statistically significant statistical effects on gambling addiction. Self-regulation did not show statistically significant regulatory effects between irrational gambling beliefs and gambling addiction. Conclusions : It is necessary to take a proactive approach to minimize the negative effects of sports betting and to be aware of the rapidly changing sports gambling environment factors.
Objectives: Self-reported disease history is often used in epidemiological studies. In this study, we acquired the hospital records of subjects who self-reported stroke or myocardial infarction (MI) and evaluated the validity of the participants' self-reported disease history. We also determined the level of agreement between specialists and non-specialists. Methods: Among the participants in the Health Examinees study, 1488 subjects self-reported stroke or MI during 2012-2017, and medical records were acquired for the 429 subjects (28.8%) who agreed to share their medical information. Each record was independently assigned to 2 medical doctors for review. The records were classified as 'definite,' 'possible,' or 'not' stroke or MI. If the doctors did not agree, a third doctor made the final decision. The positive predictive value (PPV) of self-reporting was calculated with the doctors' review as the gold standard. Kappa statistics were used to compare the results between general doctors and neurologists or cardiologists. Results: Medical records from 208 patients with self-reported stroke and 221 patients with self-reported MI were reviewed. The PPV of self-reported disease history was 51.4% for stroke and 32.6% for MI. If cases classified as 'possible' were counted as positive diagnoses, the PPV was 59.1% for stroke and 33.5% for MI. Kappa statistics showed moderate levels of agreement between specialists and nonspecialists for both stroke and MI. Conclusions: The validity of self-reported disease was lower than expected, especially in those who reported having been diagnosed with MI. Proper consideration is needed when using these self-reported data in further studies.
Purpose: This study examined the mediating effects of self-esteem on the relationship of college students' parental acceptance-rejection rearing attitude and aggression according to gender. Methods: This study was conducted as a descriptive survey. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from the 1st to 20th of November 2017, and questionnaires from 266 college students were used in the analysis using a Chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, simple and multiple regression techniques with the PASW/WIN 20.0 program. Results: In male students, self-esteem had perfect mediating effects on the relationship between the parental acceptance-rearing attitude and aggression. On the other hand, it had partial mediating effects on the relationship between the parental rejection-rearing attitude and aggression. In female students, self-esteem did not have mediating effects on the relationship between the parental acceptance-rejection rearing attitude and aggression. Conclusion: To reduce college students' aggression, it is necessary to build effective strategies to redefine the parent-child relationship and develop a self-esteem promotion program considering gender.
