  • Hyperbolic thin-shell cooling towers have complicated vibration modes, and are very sensitive to the effects of group towers and wind-induced vibrations. Traditional aero-elastic models of cooling towers are usually designed based on the method of stiffness simulation by continuous medium thin shell materials. However, the method has some shortages in actual engineering applications, so the so-called "equivalent beam-net design method" of aero-elastic models of cooling towers is proposed in the paper and an aero-elastic model with a proportion of 1: 200 based on the method above with integrated pressure measurements and vibration measurements has been designed and carried out in TJ-3 wind tunnel of Tongji university. According to the wind tunnel test, this paper discusses the impacts of self-excited force effect on the surface wind pressure of a large-scale cooling tower and the results show that the impact of self-excited force on the distribution characteristics of average surface wind pressure is very small, but the impact on the form of distribution and numerical value of fluctuating wind pressure is relatively large. Combing with the Complete Quadratic Combination method (hereafter referred to as CQC method), the paper further studies the numerical sizes and distribution characteristics of background components, resonant components, cross-term components and total fluctuating wind-induced vibration responses of some typical nodes which indicate that the resonance response is dominant in the fluctuating wind-induced vibration response and cross-term components are not negligible for wind-induced vibration responses of super-large cooling towers.

  • A novel three-degree-of-freedom (DOF) forced vibration system has been developed for identification of aeroelastic (self-excited) load parameters used in time-domain response analysis of wind-excited flexible structures. This system is capable of forcing sinusoidal motions on a section model of a structure that is used in wind tunnel aeroelastic studies along all three degrees of freedom - along-wind, cross-wind, and torsional - simultaneously or in any combination thereof. It utilizes three linear actuators to force vibrations at a consistent frequency but varying amplitudes between the three. This system was designed to identify all the parameters, namely, aeroelastic- damping and stiffness that appear in self-excited (motion-dependent) load formulation either in time-domain (rational functions) or frequency-domain (flutter derivatives). Relatively large displacements (at low frequencies) can be generated by the system, if required. Results from three experiments, airfoil, streamlined bridge deck and a bluff-shaped bridge deck, are presented to demonstrate the functionality and robustness of the system and its applicability to multiple cross-section types. The system will allow routine identification of aeroelastic parameters through wind tunnel tests that can be used to predict response of flexible structures in extreme and transient wind conditions.

  • The squeal of drum brakes was investigated numerically and experimentally. Modal testings were performed for shoes, drums, backing plates and their assemblies. In order to predict the squeal phenomena, stability analysis was performed based on a simplified self-excited vibration model. Based on modal testings, the dynamic properties of the brake elements and the parameters used in this analysis were determined. The geometries of shoes and drums were also considered. The result shows that the modification methods of the shoe and the drum design are feasible for noise reduction.

  • Brake noise is classified according to frequency territory: judder, groan and squeal. Squeal noise of disk brake is a noise and self excited vibration with frequency of $1{\sim}10Khz$ caused by the friction force between the disk and the pad of the automobile. Passengers in a vehicle feel uncomfortable. It causes unstable characteristic to the brake system when you try to stop the vehicle. Thus this study aims to find in which conditions the vehicles are stable during the braking hour and find ways to decrease a squeal noise and the vibration by measuring various factors including squeal noise and self excited vibration between the pad and disk brake system during the braking hour. From the result the countermeasure for a squeal noise and a vibration decrease is established. Also the analyzed data is found to be useful and can be applied to the actual brake model.

  • To simulate the self excited torsional vibrations of rotating drill strings (DSs) in vertical bore-holes, the nonlinear wave models of homogeneous and sectional torsional pendulums are formulated. The stated problem is shown to be of singularly perturbed type because the coefficient appearing before the second derivative of the constitutive nonlinear differential equation is small. The diapasons ${\omega}_b\leq{\omega}\leq{\omega}_l$ of angular velocity ${\omega}$ of the DS rotation are found, where the torsional auto-oscillations (of limit cycles) of the DS bit are generated. The variation of the limit cycle states, i.e. birth (${\omega}={\omega}_b$), evolution (${\omega}_b<{\omega}<{\omega}_l$) and loss (${\omega}={\omega}_l$), with the increase in angular velocity ${\omega}$ is analyzed. It is observed that firstly, at birth state of bifurcation of the limit cycle, the auto-oscillation generated proceeds in the regime of fast and slow motions (multiscale motion) with very small amplitude and it has a relaxation mode with nearly discontinuous angular velocities of elastic twisting. The vibration amplitude increases as ${\omega}$ increases, and then it decreases as ${\omega}$ approaches ${\omega}_l$. Sectional drill strings are also considered, and the conditions of the solution at the point of the upper and lower section joints are deduced. Besides, the peculiarities of the auto-oscillations of the sectional DSs are discussed.

  • This paper presents a study on amplitude-dependent self-excited aerodynamic forces of a 5:1 rectangular cylinder through free vibration wind tunnel test. The sectional model was spring-supported in a single degree of freedom (SDOF) in torsion, and it is found that the amplitude of the free vibration cylinder model was not divergent in the post-flutter stage and was instead of various stable amplitudes varying with the wind speed. The amplitude-dependent aerodynamic damping is determined using Hilbert Transform of response time histories at different wind speeds in a smooth flow. An approach is proposed to extract aerodynamic derivatives as nonlinear functions of the amplitude of torsional motion at various reduced wind speeds. The results show that the magnitude of A2*, which is related to the negative aerodynamic damping, increases with increasing wind speed but decreases with vibration amplitude, and the magnitude of A3* also increases with increasing wind speed but keeps stable with the changing amplitude. The amplitude-dependent aerodynamic derivatives derived from the tests can also be used to estimate the post-flutter response of 5:1 rectangular cylinders with different dynamic parameters via traditional flutter analysis.

  • This study proposes a numerical model to explain the closely placed double modes in the vibration of a layered stone pagoda system. The friction surface between the stones is modelled as the Timoshenko finite element while each stone layer is modelled as a rigid body. It is assumed that the irregular asperity on the friction surface enables the stone to be excited. This results in the closely placed modes that are composed of natural modes and self-excited modes. To examine the validity of the proposed model, a set of modal testing and analysis for a layered stone pagoda mock-up model has been conducted and a set of closely placed double modes are extracted. Applying the extended sensitivity-based system identification technique, the various system parameters are identified so that the modal parameters of the proposed numerical model are the same with those of the experimental mock-up. For a horizontal impulse excitation, the simulated acceleration responses are compared with measurements.
