Purpose: This study aimed to assess the levels of and relationships among health literacy, knowledge about diabetes, and self-care activities in the Korean low-income elderly with diabetes and to identify factors influencing the self-care activities of this vulnerable population. Methods: This study surveyed a total of 151 low-income elderly patients with diabetes registered at 16 Visiting Health Care Services in B City, Korea. Health literacy was measured with the Newest Vital Sign. Diabetes knowledge was measured with the Diabetes Knowledge Test. The Summary of Diabetes Self-care Activities Questionnaire was used to assess diabetes self-care activities. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify significant factors influencing diabetes self-care activities in these patients. Results: In the regression model, diabetes knowledge (${\beta}=.322$, p<.001), exercise (${\beta}=.337$, p<.001), and experiences of diabetes education (${\beta}=.241$, p=.001) were significantly associated with increased diabetes self-care activities in low-income elderly patients with diabetes when gender, education, health literacy, and subjective health state were controlled. Conclusion: To improve diabetes self-care activities in the low-income elderly with diabetes, it is important to develop a customized program considering their knowledge, exercise, and diabetes education experience.
This study was made to provide basic materials required to develop the program for desirable change of eating behavior which might be regarded as the aim of nutrition education. In this study, the relationship between the factors known to be affecting eating behavior like nutrition knowledge and dietary self efficacy was examined with high grade elementary students in Gangwon Province. The results are as follows; First, positive relationship was observed with significant difference(p<0.001) in the relationships between eating behavior and dietary self efficacy(r=0.465), between nutrition knowledge level and eating behavior(r=0.216) and between nutrition knowledge level and dietary self efficacy(r=0.312). Second, the ratio explaining the effect of dietary self efficacy and nutrition knowledge on eating behavior was 22.3%, and it affected in the order of significance level such that dietary self efficacy(p<0.001) and nutrition knowledge level(p<0.05). Third, the level of desirable eating behavior was consistent with the level of nutrition knowledge. And the scores of nutrition knowledge were $28.97{\pm}4.66$ for 'poor' group, $30.01{\pm}3.85$ for 'normal' group, $31.13{\pm}3.94$ for 'good' group and $31.75{\pm}4.10$ for 'excellent' group. When the scores of eating behavior was considered in accordance with the level of nutrition knowledge, there was difference between the groups with poor and normal scores and the groups with good and excellent scores(p<0.001), however, there was no difference between poor and normal group, and between good and excellent group. Fourth, it was found that dietary self efficacy affected the eating behavior level by level. The eating behavior score was $23.82{\pm}5.25$ for the poor dietary self efficacy group, $26.88{\pm}4.00$ for the normal group, $30.27{\pm}3.66$ for the good group and $32.81{\pm}3.79$ for the excellent group. It showed that as the degree of dietary self efficacy increased the degree of eating behavior increased in all four groups (p<0.001).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of structured information provided on self care knowledge, self care performance, and functional status. Method: The data were collected using self care knowledge and performance assessment tool, and functional status assessment tool from both group hospitalized patients at D hospital in Busan. Results: There was a significant improvement(p=.032) in self care knowledge in experimental group compared to the control group. But there were not improvement in self care performance and functional status in experimental group compared to the control group. But comparing to pretest and posttest in experimental group, There were significant improvement in self care performance (p=.003) and functional status(p=.013). Conclusion: Structured information provided showed increased in the degree of knowledge, self care performance, and functional status. But the effect size of program which had been developed in this study was estimated small, so there is needed to modify this program and to research repeatedly.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of education about pressure ulcer classification and incontinence-associated dermatitis on knowledge and self-efficacy in pressure ulcer among nurses. Methods: One group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were 41 nurses in a tertiary hospital in Seoul. A 90 minutes lecture was delivered. The self-reported-questionnaire on knowledge and self-efficacy and photograph test for knowledge were done at pre- and post-education. Results: After education, there was significant increase in the score of knowledge measured by questionnaire (mean 1.76, p<.001), in the score of knowledge measured by photographs (mean 2.00, p<.001) and in the score of self-efficacy (mean 5.17, p<.001). Conclusion: This study showed that knowledge and self-efficacy in pressure ulcer were improved by the education about pressure ulcer classification and incontinence-associated dermatitis. This program may be used for enhancing nurses' abilities of caring pressure ulcer.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the knowledge and attitude of applicants on self-help teacher's program for arthritis patients. Subjects of the study constituted 407 applicants who attended the self-help teacher's program for arthritis patients. Self report questionnaires were used to measure the knowledge about arthritis and the attitude toward self-help education. In data analysis, SPSS PC 9.0 Program was utilized for descriptive statistics and one-way anova analysis. The results were as follows : Average age of the participants were 37, while 62% married, 62% had 4-year or above education, and 32.7% had experience of community health nursing. The mean score of knowledge about arthritis was 17.99/28 ; the mean score of applicants' appraisal on the arthritis patients' ability of self-help was 31.66/40 ; the mean score of applicants' attitude toward self-help education for arthritis patients was 35.64/56. According to regions of education for applicants' self-help program, there were not significant differences in applicants' knowledge and appraisal and attitude on self-help program.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of self-efficacy, knowledge about the disease, and self-care behavior to the metabolic level in patients with NIDDM. Method: Data were collected from March 15 to April 15, 2001. Participants in the study were 48 patients with NIDDM who were seen regularly at the endocrinology out-patient department of Gwangju Christian Hospital. The data were collected through individual interviews and patient blood samples. The data were analyzed with SPSS/PC+, using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and Cronbach's Alpha. Result: 1. The mean score for self-efficacy was $71.37{\pm}15.56$, knowledge $15.00{\pm}2.84$, self-care behavior $63.18{\pm}13.10$. The mean score for HbAlc level was $7.66{\pm}1.77%$, HDL cholesterol level, $46.22{\pm}13.04 mg/dl$ and total cholesterol level, $187.93{\pm}41.45 mg/dl$. 2. There was a significant difference between patients with a spouse and those without one (t=-2.08, p=0.042), in knowledge according to level of obesity (t=5.14, p=0.010), duration of illness (t=3.22, p=0.031) and presence of complications related to diabetes (t=-2.58, p= 0.013). There were no significant differences in self-care behavior, but there were significant differences in sugar metabolic level according to sex (t=-2.02, p=0.050). 3. The correlation between diabetic patients' self-efficacy, knowledge and self-care behaviour and metabolic control was significantly related only to self-efficacy and self-care behavior (r=.692, p=0.000). Conclusion: It is necessary to improve self-efficacy, knowledge, and self-care behavior for patients with NIDDM by using nursing intervention programs to promote and maintain metabolic control.

Purpose: Breast cancer is a common cancer in women in Korea. Early detection of breast cancer is very important for the protection of a woman's health. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to determine the effect of BSE education on knowledge, self efficacy and performance in middle-aged women. Method: The participants were 33 women who agreed to participate in the study. They responded to a questionnaire that included items on knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE. The experimental group was given a 90 minute-session including a lecture and practice with a BSE practice model and their own body. Their knowledge of the BSE was measured using Choi's tool and self-efficacy was measured using the scale by Champion and Scott. Results: Homogeneity for knowledge, self-efficacy and performance of BSE between the experimental and the control groups was confirmed. After 3 months of BSE education, knowledge, self-efficacy and frequency of BSE performance in the experimental group were significantly higher than for the women in the control group. Conclusion: A BSE education program would be helpful to enhance health behavior by early detection of breast cancer in middle-age women.
Purpose: This study was done to examine actor and partner effect of dementia knowledge, self-efficacy and depression on dementia preventive behavior in elderly couples. Methods: Participants were 115 couples aged 60 years or over who met eligibility criteria. All measures were self-administered. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 program. Results: Dementia knowledge in elderly couples showed actor and partner effect on dementia preventive behavior. Self-efficacy in the wife did not have direct effects on dementia preventive behavior, but showed indirect effects through dementia knowledge. Self-efficacy in the husband showed direct effects on dementia preventive behavior and indirect effects through dementia knowledge. Wife's depression had direct actor effect on dementia preventive behavior and indirect effect through self-efficacy and dementia knowledge. Husband's depression did not have direct actor effect on dementia preventive behavior, but indirect effect through self-efficacy and dementia knowledge. Effect size of wives' dementia knowledge, self-efficacy and depression on dementia preventive behavior was larger than that of husbands'. Dementia preventive behavior, dementia knowledge and depression had a mutual effect. Conclusion: Results indicate that to promote dementia preventive activity in elderly couples, programs should be conducted for both of the couple, but focused differently for wife and husband.
Objectives : It is important to catch individual characteristics by measuring the level of self-efficacy, radiation safety knowledge, attitudes to increase behavior levels in the radiation safety management(RSM) and we consider this should be applied to the professional program development to improve RSM activities of dental hygienist and students at department of dental hygiene. Methods : This study mentioned mainly self-efficacy, radiation safety knowledge, attitudes for dental hygienists and the second & third year students at department of dental hygiene in Pusan area to provide the correct information associated with the use of radiation and to be aid in the development program to increase behavior levels in the RSM in dental care institutions and schools in the future and performed a survey 8 May to 7 Juiy, 2011. The survey results were as follows Results : 1. The results of self-efficacy is $3.53{\pm}0.42$ points for the dental hygienist and $3.32{\pm}0.40$ points for students(p<0.001). 2. According to the knowledge level of RSM, the result is $11.7{\pm}3.12$ points for the dental hygienist and $9.56{\pm}2.72$ points for students(p<0.001). 3. According to the knowledge level of RSM, the result is $4.40{\pm}0.49$ points for the dental hygienist and $4.22{\pm}0.56$ points for students(p<0.001). 4. According to relationship among self-efficacy, radiation safety knowledge and attitudes, the higher the score for knowledge of RSM was, the higher the score for self-efficacy was. The higher the score for attitudes was, the higher the score for self-efficacy and knowledge was(p<0.01). 5. The factors to affect attitudes about RSM were self-efficacy, knowledge(p<0.01).

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the knowledge, attitude and self-confidence of student nurses regarding control of nosocomial infections and to provide data for preparation of an efficient policy and education program regarding nosocomial infections. Method: A descriptive survey design was utilized, and, using a questionnaire, which included 15 items for knowledge, 81 items for attitude, 81 items for self-confidence, data were collected from 520 student nurses. Descriptive statistic, t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients, and Stepwise multiple regression analysis were used with SPSS win 12.0 to analyze the data. Results: The mean score for knowledge was 0.63, for attitude, 4.38 and for self-confidence, 3.50. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge, attitude and self-confidence in control of nosocomial infections. Attitude, practical attitude, and education were significant factors affecting self-confidence regarding nosocomial infection control. Conclusion: These research findings should be useful in promoting continuous and repeated educational programs on nosocomial infection for student nurses.
