The self-efficacy as the mediating variable to connect knowledge to behavior was Identified as the most powerful predictor that determines behavior. The purpose of this study was, first, to develop the slides /tape program based on the self-efficacy theory of Bandura(1977) second, to investigate that the Slides /Tape program would increase self-efficacy and self-care in patients with hypertension. The subjects for this study were 54 hypertensive outpatients and data collection was carried out from January 9, 1995 until March 18, 1995. The design of this study was one-group pretest and posttest design and the results are as follows 1) The slides /tape program was developed to based on performance accomplishment and vicarious experience which are induction modes of efficacy expectation. It composed of 80 slides and 20 minutes long tape. 2) The effectiveness of the slides /tape program “The self-efficacy score after giving the slides /tape program will be higher than one before giving the slides /tape program.” was supported (t=3.67, p=0.001). “The self-care score after giving the slides /tape program will be higher than one before giving the slides /tape program.” was supported(t=5.23. 000), 3) A significant difference was found between the self-care and sex. Also, the significant difference was found between the self-care and job. From these results, the slides /tape program is effective to increase the hypertensive patients' self-care.
Purpose: This study was designed to explore pain and self-care behaviors and identify related variables in patients with chronic arthritis. Method: One hundred fifty patients with arthritis were recruited from two university based arthritis centers according to selection criteria. Collected data were analyzed using the SAS program to analyze the responses to the structured questionnaires of the study. Result: Most of the participants expressed pain and the intensity of the pain was moderate. There were significant differences according to age, educational level, diagnosis, duration of illness, number of affected joint, and use of complementary therapy. Self-care behavior scores were moderately high. The highest practice was for 'regular visits to the hospital', and the lowest for 'applying physical therapy at home'. The mean self-care behavior scores showed significant differences according to economic status and educational level. Pain scores showed no correlation with self-care behavior. Conclusion: Developing self-management programs for patients with chronic arthritis should focus on self-care skills which are applicable in the relief of pain and enhancement of knowledge. The skills are recommended not only for better health practices but also for enhancing the level of well-being and life satisfaction.
Objectives: This study thus set out to examine the health literacy and self-care behaviors of community-dwelling elderly patients with hypertension and investigate their relations and influential factors, thus providing basic data to develop a nursing intervention program to promote self-care behaviors among hypertension patients. Methods: The subjects include 180 hypertension patients using community health centers, public senior centers, and welfare centers in Jeju. Results: The subjects scored a mean of 49.8 (${\pm}12.4$) points on health literacy and 55.8 (${\pm}6.7$) points on self-care behaviors. In the results of hierarchical regression analysis, health literacy independently predicted self-care behaviors (${\beta}=.12$, p=.050) after controlling for general characteristics, hypertension-related knowledge and self-efficacy. Conclusions: These results suggest that interventions for improving health literacy are important to enhance elder's ability of self-care behaviors. It is necessary to understand the health literacy of elderly patients with hypertension before providing them with educational intervention and information and to develop appropriate educational materials and intervention programs.

Purpose: This study aimed to test the efficacy of a nurse-led postpartum self-care (NLPPSC) intervention at reducing postpartum fatigue (PPF) and depressive mood and promoting maternal functioning among first-time mothers in Bangladesh. Methods: A non-synchronized quasi-experimental design was used. First-time mothers were recruited during postpartum and assigned to the experimental or control group (34 each). The experimental group received the NLPPSC in the hospital, a 1-day intervention that focused on increasing self-efficacy. The control group received usual care. Data on PPF, depressive mood, maternal functioning, self-care behaviors, postpartum self-efficacy, and self-care knowledge were collected at postpartum 2 weeks (attrition 23.5%) and 6 weeks (attrition 16.1%). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, bivariate statistics, and linear mixed model analysis. Results: One-third (33.3%) of new mothers experienced depressive mood (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale scores of ≥13 points). The NLPPSC intervention was statistically significant in decreasing PPF (β=-6.17, SE=1.81, t=-3.39, p<.01) and increased maternal functioning at postpartum 6 weeks in the experimental group (β=13.72, t=3.73, p<.01) compared to the control. Knowledge was also statistically significant for increased maternal functioning over time (β=.37, SE=.18, t=2.03, p<.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in depressive mood over time. Conclusion: The NLPPSC intervention was feasible and effective in improving fatigue and maternal functioning in Bangladeshi mothers by postpartum 6 weeks and thus supports implementing the NLPPSC intervention for new mothers after childbirth.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to help care workers to do their best as first respondents by analysing their recognition, knowledge, and self-efficacy on basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) that is directly connected to the lives of patients and thus their education and methods can be improved for their positive basic lifesaving work. Method: For this purpose 360 structured questionnaires were used to the subjects in the eastern area of Jeonnam province from June 20 to July 4, 2011. Of these questionnaires 217 were used excluding 113 incomplete, 27 error, and 3 male ones. The collected data were analysed by the real number, the percentage, the average, the standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey with SPSS WIN 18.0. Results: 1. In the view of subjects, those aged over 51 accounted for 96(44.2%) as the majority, high school graduates, 95(43.8%), worked for 1 or more than 1 year-less than 2 years, 66(30.4%), experienced to see persons collapsed losing their consciousness, 46(21.2%), took the education, 184(85.7%), had 1 session of education, 80(43%), got the last education for 2 or more than 2 years 68(37%), and practiced through mannequin for the education aids, 86(46.7%). 2. There was significant difference in the view of recognition with the length of work (p=.010) and experienced to see persons collapsed losing their consciousness (p=.020), in the view of knowledge with academic background (p=.040) and the length of work, and in the view of self-efficacy with academic background (p=.002), the length of work (p=.010) and experienced to see persons collapsed losing their consciousness (p=.000). 3. There was significant difference in the session of education (p=.000), last education (p=.025) and education aids for basic CPR. Self-efficacy had significant difference according to the session of education for basic CPR (p=.001) and the time of education (p=.000). 4. There was correlation between recognition and self-efficacy (r=.41). The higher the recognition is, the better the self-efficacy improves. However the correlation between knowledge and self-efficacy was so low that the former did not have influence on self-efficacy. Conclusions: It needs to offer education to the lifesaving workers based on their experiences. If there is education more than 2 sessions in a year with mannequin and the simulation providing sufficient hours, care workers' recognition would be increased resulting in higher self-efficacy and thus they could keep the role of active lifesaving worker at the first practical site.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the individual, job, and organizational factors affecting the individual innovative behaviors among tertiary care hospitals' nurses. Methods: The participants in this study were 230 nurses who have worked more than one year in tertiary care hospitals. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires that included individual factors (self efficacy, and empowerment), job factors (knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice, and beliefs for evidence-based practice), organizational factors (perceived organizational support), and individual innovation behavior. The SPSS/WIN 25.0 program was used for data analysis which included descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results: Individual innovative behavior had significant positive correlations with all of individual, job, and organizational factors. The results of hierarchical regression analysis showed that knowledge and skills for evidence-based practice (β=.28, p<.001), self efficacy (β=.25, p=.002), gender (female, β=.23, p<.001), and beliefs for evidence-based practice (β=.17, p=.016) were significant factors influencing on individual innovative behavior. Conclusion: These findings suggest that knowledge, skills and beliefs for evidence-based practice, and self efficacy were linked to individual innovative behaviors. Therefore, education and human resource management improving self efficacy, knowledge, skills and beliefs for evidence-based practice are needed to increase nurses' individual innovative behaviors in tertiary care hospitals.
This study was surveyed the knowledge and attitude toward the elderly in dental personnels, who play an important role in oral health of the elderly in the aging society, In order to arrange the basic data that is conducive to development in the mouth care of the elderly, the research was conducted from January 7 to February 14, 2008, targeting 270 dental personnels in Daejeon & Chungnam area, who are in charge of oral duties in the current clinic. As a result of analyzing so that questionnaire can be prepared with the self-administered questionnaire, the following results were obtained 1. The knowledge level on the elderly in dental hygienist was 13.47 marks out of 25-mark perfection. There was no difference in knowledge depending on job category and volunteer-work activity experience, And, there was no difference even depending on physical & physiological sphere, psychological sphere, and family & social sphere. 2. The attitude level toward the elderly in dental hygienist was 91.63 marks out of 150-mark perfection. Dental hygienist showed positive attitude in personality characteristic, emotional characteristic, and self-management ability by sphere, and showed statistically significant difference (p=0.011). 3. In case of having volunteer-work activity experience, the attitude level toward the elderly was 92.57 marks out of 150-mark perfection, A case of having volunteer-work activity experience showed positive tendency in emotional characteristic, self-management ability, and judgement-ability characteristic by sphere, And, the attitude toward family relation was indicated to be negative tendency, thus there was statistical significance(p=0.022). 4. As for the correlation between knowledge and attitude toward the elderly, dental hygienist was indicated to have high interest in the volunteer-work experience, the elderly education experience, and the elderly problem(r=0. 444). The knowledge and attitude toward the elderly had slightly positive correlation(r=0.155). Dental hygienists are being required gradually as the primary staff for the elderly people's dental care in the aging society. A continuous education is needed so that dental hygienists can have positive sight in understanding, knowledge, and attitude. And, the development in a mouth care program for the elderly in line with it is considered to be necessary.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate foot ulcer risk factors, foot care knowledge, and foot care practice in patients with type 2 diabetes. Method: One hundred fifty type 2 diabetic patients were in and out-patients in a large urban hospital. The data were collected using a self-report questionnaire, chart review and foot examination. The questionnaires were developed by the researchers through the experts consultation and literature review. High risk for foot ulcer was evaluated by peripheral neuropathy(PN), peripheral vascular disease(PVD), and prior foot ulcer. Foot risk scores(FRS) means numbers of present risk factors. Results: 31.3% of subjects show 1 FRS, and 13.3% showed 2 FRS. Mean foot care frequency was 3.5 times per week. There were significant differences in foot care knowledge according to DM education (t=2.96, p=.004) and foot care education (t=3.65, p=.001). There were significant differences in the foot care practice activities according to duration of DM (t=3.48, p=.010) and educational levels. Conclusion: There were high proportion of foot ulcer risk among the patients. It is necessary to screen high risk foot ulcer patients and provide practical education for foot care practice of diabetic patients.
Diabetes mellitus, a universal and prevalent chronic disease, is projected to be one of the most formidable worldwide health problems in the 21st century. For those living with diabetes, there is a need for self-care skills to manage a complex medical regimen. Self-efficacy which refers to one's belief in his/her capability to monitor and perform the daily activities required to manage diabetes has be found to be related to self-care. The concept of self-efficacy comes from social cognitive theory which maintains that cognitive mechanism mediate the performance of behavior. The literature cites several research studies which show a strong relationship between self-efficacy and self-care behavior. Meta-analysis is a technique that enables systematic review and quantitative integration of the results from multiple primary studies that are relevant to a particular research question. Therefore, this study was done using meta-analysis to quantitatively integrate the results of independent research studies to obtain numerical estimates of the overall effect of a self-efficacy with diabetic patient on self-care behaviors. The research proceeded in three stages : 1) literature search and retrieval of studies in which self-efficacy was related to self-care, 2) coding, and 3) calculation of mean effect size and data analysis. Seventeen studies which met the research criteria included study population of adults with diabetes, measures of self-care and measures of self-efficacy as a predictive variable. Computation of effect size was done on DSTAT which is a statistical computer program specifically designed for meta-analysis. To determine the effect of self-efficacy on self-care practice homogeneity tests were conducted. Pooled effect size estimates, to determine the best subvariable for composite variables, metabolic control variables and component of self-efficacy and self-care, indicated that the effect of self-efficacy composite on self-care composite was moderate to large. The weighted mean effect size of self-efficacy composite and self-care composite were +.76 and the confidence interval was from +.66 to +.86 with the number of subjects being 1,545. The total for this meta-analysis result showed that the weighted mean effect sizes ranged from +.70 to +1.81 which indicates a large effect. But since reliabilities of the instruments in the primary studies were low or not stated, caution must be applied in unconditionally accepting the results from these effect sizes. Meta-analysis is a useful took for clarifying the status of knowledge development and guiding decision making about future research and this study confirmed that there is a relationship between self-efficacy and self-care in patients with diabetes. It, thus, provides support for nurses to promote self-efficacy in their patients. While most of the studies included in this meta-analysis used social cognitive theory as a framework for the study, some studies use Fishbein & Ajzen's attitude model as a model for active self-care. Future research is needed to more fully define the concept of self-care and to determine what it is that makes patients feel competent in their self-care activities. The results of this study showed that self-efficacy can promote self-care. Future research is needed with experimental design to determine nursing interventions that will increase self-efficacy.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the emergency response ability to develop an education program to strengthen the emergency response ability of caregivers having the highest probability of discovering emergency situations. Methods: This study is a descriptive research study conducted by 204 caregivers working in elderly care facilities and home care centers located in one area. The collected data were analyzed by independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0 statistical program. Results: First aid knowledge was related to work time (F=3.52, p=.008), number of care people (F=2.58, p=.038), workplace (F=6.76, p=.001), and self-efficacy (F=3.70, p=.026), and the ability to cope with emergency situations showed a statistically significant difference in education level (F=3.58, p=.015). There was a positive correlation between self-efficacy and emergency response ability (r=.179, p<.05), and the factors affecting emergency response ability were education level (β=-.164, p=.050), workplace (β=.290, p=.023), and self-efficacy (β=.103, p=.022). Conclusion : Factors influencing the improvement of caregivers' ability to cope with emergency situations, workplace, education level, and self-efficacy were found. Thus, it is suggested to develop and apply an emergency education program to increase self-efficacy and consider the workplace and educational level.
