  • Polymeric micelles, supramolecular assemblies of block copolymers, are useful nanocarriers for the systemic delivery of drugs and genes. Recently, novel polymeric micelles with various functions such as the targetability and stimuli-sensitivity have been emerged as promising carriers that enhance the efficacy of drugs and genes with minimal side effects. This presentation focuses our recent approach to the preparation of functional block copolymers that are useful for constructing smart micellar delivery systems in advanced therapeutics, including chemo-gene therapy. Particular emphasis is placed on the characteristic behaviors of intracellular environment-sensitive micelles that selectively exert drug activity and gene expression in live cells.

  • This paper proposes a unique shot boundary detection algorithm for the video indexing and/or browsing. Conventional methods based on the frame differences and the histogram differences are improved. Instead of using absolute frame differences, block by block based relative frame differences are employed. Frame adaptive thresholding values are also employed for the better detection. for the cases that the frame differences are not enough to detect the shot boundary, histogram differences are selectively applied. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces both the “false positive” errors and the “false negative” errors especially for the videos of dynamic local and/or global motions

  • This study describes a method where the match of two different length scales, i.e., the patterns from self-assembled block copolymer (<50 nm) and electron beam writing (>50 nm), allow the nanometer scale pattern mask. The method is based on using block copolymers containing a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block, which is subject to be decomposed under an electron beam, as a pattern resist for electron beam lithography. Electron beam on self assembled block copolymer thin film selectively etches PMMA microdomains, giving rise to a polymeric nano-pattern mask on which subsequent evaporation of chromium produces the arrays of Cr nanoparticles followed by lifting off the mask. Furthermore, electron beam lithography was performed on the micropatterned block copolymer film fabricated by micro-imprinting, leading to a hierarchical self assembled pattern where a broad range of length scales was effectively assembled, ranging from several tens of nanometers, through submicrons, to a few microns.

  • In this letter, we propose a new prediction block filter that can reduce errors between the original and prediction blocks. The proposed filter adaptively adjusts filter coefficients by using the previously reconstructed adjacent blocks and their prediction blocks. Then, the filter is selectively applied to the current prediction block according to the rate-distortion optimization. Moreover, since the same filter coefficients can be derived in the decoder, they are not encoded into the bit-stream. The proposed method achieves a 4.65% bitrate saving on average compared with H.264/AVC.

  • Epidural block is used extensively in each of the fields of surgical anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and diagnosis and management of acute and chronic pain. New developments in the understanding of pain conduction have extended the use of continuous epidural blockade to the administration of drugs that selectively block pain conduction while leaving sensation and motor power essentially unchanged. The safety and the reliability of spinal epidural catheter techniques have permitted relief of acute and chronic pain. However, one of the important aspects of the management of the epidural catheter is the possibility of epidural infection. We have experienced a case of epidural infection during control of post-herpetic neuralgia and discuss management of the epidural catheter in this article.

  • In this study, a selecvively block barrier was developed to prevent the spread of contaminants (TPH, Phenol) in the ground only when contamination occurs. The materials were used Jumunjin sand, bentonite, polyolefin elastomer and spill hound marine. First, the properties and environmental hazards characteristics of materials were analyzed for evaluated their usability. Then, the possibility of use as a barrier material was confirmed by analyzing the water permeability characteristics that change after 24 hours of contact with contaminants. As a result of the analysis, the pH of each component was similar to the general groundwater pH range. In addition, the toxicity characteristics and the possibility of dissolution of hazardous substances, it was determined that there was no environmental hazard as the content was below the regulation value. Lastly, when comparing the permeability coefficient before and after contact with the contaminant, the permeability coefficient of approximately α × 10-3cm/sec before contact was reduced to α × 10-6cm/sec after contact with the contaminant.

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the availability of mandibular symphysis corticocancellous block grafts in patients treated for reconstruction of intraoral jaw defects. Materials & Methods: 8 patients with mandibular and maxillary bony defects were treated with corticocancellous block of symphysis. The types of defects included 4 pathologic jaw defects and 4 vertical and/or horizontal alveolar deficiencies. The age ranged from 13 to 45 years. Additional treatments such as plate fixation, alloplastic bony substitutes, and/or barrier membrane application were perfomred. They were evaluated for complications and healing of defects. Follow-up period ranged from 6 to 15 months. Results: 2 patients experienced complications such as wound dehiscence and mild resorption of exposed bone. None of the patients needed secondary operation. Paresthesia of lip, chin, and teeth were recovered completely by 6 months postoperatively. Reconstructed wound showed favorable healing and bony consolidation. Conclusion: Corticocancellous block of mandibular symphysis can be used for the reconstruction of a variety of intraoral local jaw defects selectively. Advantages were easy fixation of graft, possibility of restoration of original alveolar contour, and decreased donor site morbidity.

  • This paper describes and analyzes IBC (intra block copy) in HEVC (high efficiency video coding) SCC (screen content coding) to improve the coding efficiency of IBC. HEVC SCC reference software SCM 2 is employed to analyze the selection ratio of IBC which is newly adopted in HEVC SCC, and the tools for IBC such as the block vector prediction and block vector coding method are evaluated. Experimental results show the average IBC selection ratio is 31.08% and 0.33% in I-Slice and B-Slice, respectively. Based on this results, the coding efficiency of IBC could be improved by utilizing IBC selectively. In addition, analysis tests of block vector prediction and the block vector coding method show the current methods are not efficient to screen content videos, and the analysis results are presented to improve these methods.

  • In this paper, an adaptive temporal and spatial filter (ATSF) based on mean square error (MSE) estimation is proposed. ATSF is a block based de-noising algorithm. Each noisy block is selectively filtered by a temporal filter or a spatial filter. Multi-hypothesis motion compensated filter (MHMCF) and bilateral filter are chosen as the temporal filter and the spatial filter, respectively. Although there is no original video, we mathematically derivate a formular to estimate the real MSE between a block de-noised by MHMCF and its original block and a linear model is proposed to estimate the real MSE between a block de-noised by bilateral filter and its original block. Finally, each noisy block is processed by the filter with a smaller estimated MSE. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm achieves substantial improvements in terms of both visual quality and PSNR as compared with the conventional de-noising algorithms.

  • Naturally, block mapping FTL works well for sequential writes while page mapping FTL does well for random writes. To exploit their advantages, a practical FTL should be able to selectively apply a suitable scheme between page and block mappings for each write pattern. To meet that requirement, we propose a hybrid mapping FTL, which we call Janus-FTL, that distributes data to either block or page mapping areas. Also, we propose the fusion operation to relocate the data from block mapping area to page mapping area and the defusion operation to relocate the data from page mapping area to block mapping area. And experimental results of Janus-FTL show performance improvement of maximum 50% than other hybrid mapping FTLs.
