  • With increasing of GDP, the registration number of passenger cars has exceeded 20 million last year in Korea. Especially, the registration number of the diesel engine vehicles has been increasing. However, the WHO(World Health Organization) IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has reported that diesel engine exhaust gas is an one of HAPs, which has carcinogenic for human, and they have designated it to Group 1. To solve this problem, exhaust gas from diesel engines has to be controlled. Thus, it has been controlling by European regulatory standard in Korea. On the other hand, in order to meet the enhanced emission regulations, all manufacturing company applied $NO_x$ control device to vehicles such as EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) and so on. However, these devices (EGR, SCR) were operated by difference reaction mechanism respectively, and the composition of exhaust gas would be differenced from that of them. In this study, it was conducted to evaluate variety characteristics on changing of exhaust gas composition by each $NO_x$ control device, and the heavy duty diesel trucks were chosen as experimental vehicles. From the result, it revealed that vehicles (with EGR) were discharged higher THC as 52.5% than that of others (with SCR). However, it did not followed that trend, in the case of CO; it was discharged as 57.2% lower than that of others (with SCR). In the future, these data would be used to apply to efficient $NO_x$ control device for meeting to EURO 6.

  • To improve the flow and mixing characteristics of marine SCR system, two different mixer including up-down and swirl type mixer were considered. The purpose of this study is to analyse turbulence intensity and uniformity index in detail and to improve the performance of SCR with respect to the mixer structure. The results showed that, the concentration uniformity index is improved by about 5% with the utilization of both mixers in the front of catalyst part. Although the RMS value and relative turbulence intensity increased after the up-down type mixer, it could observed that the value of two parameters decreased with the flow proceeding forward to the downstream. For the case of swirl type mixer, the decrease of RMS value and relative turbulence intensity were relatively smaller than that of up-down type mixer, and uniform distribution of relative turbulence intensity was observed. As a results, it could be concluded that the mixing effects and the distance of the two kinds of mixer were different.

  • A Urea-SCR(Selective Catalytic Reactor) system, which converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water in the presence of a reducing agent, creates a major exhaust gas aftertreatment system for NOx reduction among other compounds. With regard to vehicle applications, a urea solution was chosen based on its eutectic composition of a 32.5wt% urea-water solution. An important advantage of this eutectic composition is that its melting point of $-11.7^{\circ}C$ is sufficiently low to avoid solidification in cold environments. However, the storage tanks must be heated separately in case of low ambient temperature levels to ensure a sufficient amount of liquid is available during scheduled start ups. In this study, therefore, a numerical investigation of three-dimensional unsteady heating problems analyzed to understand the melting processes and heat transfer characteristics including liquid volume fraction, temperature distributions, and temperature profiles. The investigations were performed using Fluent 6.3 commercial software that modeled coolant and electric heater models based on a urea solution. It is shown that the melting performance with the electric heater is higher than a coolant heater and is more efficient.

  • Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) is known as one of promising methods for reducing $NO_x$ emissions in diesel exhaust gases. $NO_x$ emissions react with ammonia in the catalyst surface of SCR system at working temperature of catalyst. In this study, to raise the reacting temperature when the exhaust gas temperature is too low, a heater is located at the bottom of SCR reactor. At an ambient temperature, ammonia is radially injected perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow at inlet pipe and uniformly mixed in the mixing area after being impinged against the wall. To predict the turbulent model inside the mixing area of SCR system, the standard ${\kappa}\;-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is applied. This work investigates numerically the effects of induced heat on the gaseous flow. The results show that the Taylor-$G{\ddot{o}}rtler$ type vortex is generated after the gaseous flow impinges the wall in which these vortices influence the temperature distribution. The addition of heat disturbs the flow structure in bottom area and then stretching flow occurs. Vorticity strand is also formed when heat is continuously increased. Constriction process takes place, however, when a further heat input over a critical temperature is increased and finally forms shed vortex which is disconnected from the vorticity strand. The strong vortex restricts the heat transport in the gaseous flow.

  • In this paper the selective reduction catalyst (SCR) for controlling the NOx at high temperature range was studied. XRD and FT-IR BET analysis was also performed to determine the structural properties and adsorption/desorption characteristics of the catalyst. In the case of anatase $TiO_2$ support, a negligible NOx conversion was observed, but the $W/TiO_2$ catalyst made using W as a active metal showed an excellent ability to remove NOx. In particular, the $W/TiO_2$ exhibited a rapid increase in the catalytic activity due to the presence of W for the NOx conversion compared to that of using the pure $TiO_2$ at a high temperature range over $400^{\circ}C$. In addition, the phenomenon of reduced reaction activity due to the heat shock for a long time was found to be suppressed.

  • To improve the $NO_X$ conversion over a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst, the DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) is usually placed upstream of the SCR catalyst to enhance the fast SCR reaction ($4NH_3+2NO+2NO_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) using equimolar amounts of NO and $NO_2$. Here, a ratio of $NO_2/NO_X$ above 50% should be avoided, because the reaction with $NO_2$ only ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$) is slower than the standard SCR reaction ($4NH_3+4NO+O_2{\rightarrow}4N_2+6H_2O$). In order to accurately predict the performance characteristics of SCR catalysts, it is therefore desired to develop a more simple and reliable mathematical and kinetic models on the oxidation kinetics of nitric oxide over a DOC. In the present work, the prediction accuracy and limit of three different chemical reaction kinetics models are presented to describe the chemicophysical characteristics and conversion performance of DOCs. Steady-state experiments with DOCs mounted on a light-duty four-cylinder 2.0-L turbocharged diesel engine then are performed, using an engine-dynamometer system to calibrate the kinetic parameters such as activation energies and preexponential factors of heterogeneous reactions. The reaction kinetics for NO oxidation over Pt-based catalysts is determined in conjunction with a transient one-dimensional (1D) heterogeneous plug flow reactor (PFR) model with diesel exhaust gas temperatures in the range of 115~$525^{\circ}C$ and space velocities in the range of $(0.4{\sim}6.5){\times}10^5\;h^{-1}$.

  • A heat recovery steam generator consists of inlet expansion duct and heat transfer tube bank modules. For the enhancement of heat transfer in the tube bank modules, the flow should be uniform before the 1st heat transfer tube bank module. The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics in the inlet expansion duct of a heat recovery steam generator by using numerical flow analysis. The aim of the present study is to establish the proper heat transfer mechanism in the heat transfer tube bank modules by the comparison of the heat transfer models, the case with the constant heat loss per unit volume and the case with heat loss by using inner and outer convective heat transfer coefficient of heat transfer tube. From the present research, it could be seen that the heat transfer mechanism with using inner and outer convective heat transfer coefficient derives more proper temperature distribution results and the acceptance criteria of the temperature distribution within ${\pm}10^{\circ}C$ before SCR is satisfied with using this heat transfer mechanism.

  • This study presents the effect of oxygen on the $NH_3$ selective catalytic reduction (SCR) by Mn/$TiO_2$ catalyst. The lattice oxygen of catalysts is participate in the low temperature SCR, and the gaseous oxygen directly takes part in the rexoidtion of reduced catalyst. These redox properties of oxygen an play important role in SCR activity and the available capability of lattice oxygen depends on the manganese oxidation state of the catalyst surface. $MnO_2$ species has a higher redox property than that of $Mn_2O_3$ species on deposited $TiO_2$ surface and these manganese oxide states strongly depend on the $TiO_2$ surface area.

  • In the past few years, considerable efforts have been directed towards the further development of Urea-SCR(selective catalytic reduction) technique for diesel-driven vehicle. Although urea possesses considerable advantages over Ammonia$(NH_3)$ in terms of toxicity and handling, its necessary decomposition into Ammonia and carbon dioxide complicates the DeNOx process. Moreover, a mobile SCR system has only a short distance between engine exhaust and the catalyst entrance. Hence, this leads to not enough residence times of urea, and therefore evaporation and thermolysis cannot be completed at the catalyst entrance. This may cause high secondary emissions of Ammonia and isocyanic acid from the reducing agent and also leads to the fact that a considerable section of the catalyst may be misused for the purely thermal steps of water evaporation and thermolysis of urea. Hence the key factor to implementation of SCR technology on automobile is fast thermolysis, good mixing of Ammonia and gas, and reducing Ammonia slip. In this context, this study performs three-dimensional numerical simulation of urea injection of heavy-duty diesel engine under various injection pressure, injector locations and number of injector hole. This study employs Eulerian-Lagrangian approach to consider break-up, evaporation and heat and mass-transfer between droplet and exhaust gas with considering thermolysis and the turbulence dispersion effect of droplet. The SCR-monolith brick has been treated as porous medium. The effect of location and number of hole of urea injector on the uniformity of Ammonia concentration distribution and the amount of water at the entrance of SCR-monolith has been examined in detail under various injection pressures. The present results show useful guidelines for the optimum design of urea injector for reducing Ammonia slip and improving DeNOx performance.
