  • In the case of low-rise buildings in seismic performance evaluation, lateral force resistance of the pillars affects the seismic performance of the building. Evaluation of the seismic performance of the column is determined by the holding performance is evaluated by comparing the shear strength and bending strength it was destroyed bylow intensity. In case of the school building, in order to install the large windows for ventilation and lighting of the partition walls are located between the pillars. The case of the pillars of these, shear failure occurs in the event of an earthquake is often, in the seismic performance evaluation, partition wall and the wall of the shim is evaluated ignoring, pillar of the general pillars If you have to calculate the results of the seismic performance distorted that are destroyed by bending behavior can be evaluated as often. Results of the study, when assessed by distinguishing the effective length of the column, it was found that when a seismic load is applied, it is possible to accurately predict the failure mode, reliable results of seismic performance evaluation of the school building.

  • The real situation of an underground reinforced concrete(RC) structure with the surrounding soil medium subjected to seismic load is quite difficult to be simulated through an expensive work and, even if it is possible to arrange such an experiment, it will be too expensive. So development of analytical method can be applied usefully to seismic design and seismic retrofit through an analysis of seismic behavior and seismic performance evaluation. A path-dependent constitutive model for soil that can estimate the response of soil layer is indispensible for dealing with kinematic interaction of RC/soil entire system under seismic loads. And interface model which deals with the dynamic interaction of RC/soil entire system is also necessary. In this study, finite element analysis program that can consider path-dependent behavior of RC and soil, and interfacial behavior between RC and soil is developed for rational seismic analysis of RC/soil entire system. Using this program, nonlinear behavior of interface between RC and soil is analyzed, and the effect of interfacial behavior to entire system is investigated.

  • Non-structural elements, such as equipment, are typically affixed to a building's floor or ceiling and move in tandem with the structure during an earthquake. Seismic forces acting upon non-structural elements traverse the ground and the building's structure. Considering this seismic load transmission mechanism, it becomes imperative to account for the interactions between soil, structure, and equipment, establishing seismic design procedures accordingly. In this study, a Soil-Structure-Equipment Interaction (SSEI) model is developed. Through seismic response analysis using this model, how the presence or absence of SSEI impacts equipment behavior is examined. Neglecting the SSEI aspect when assessing equipment responses results in an overly conservative evaluation of its seismic response. This emphasizes the necessity of proposing an analytical model and design methodology that adequately incorporate the interaction effect. Doing so enables the calculation of rational seismic forces and facilitates the seismic design of non-structural elements.

  • In current practice of earthquake resistant design the equivalent lateral force procedure is widely used because of its simplicity and convenience. But the equivalent lateral force procedure is derived based on the assumptions that the dynamic behavior of the structure is governed primarily by the fundamental vibration mode and the effect of higher modes is included in an approximate manner. Therefore the prediction of dynamic responses of structures using the equivalent lateral force procedure is not reliable when the effect of higher vibration modes on the dynamic behavior is significant. In this study, design seismic load which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes is proposed from the point of view of proper assessment of story shears which have the major influence on the design moment of beams and columns. To evaluate the effect of higher modes, differences between the story force based on the equivalent lateral force procedure specified in current earthquake resistance building code and the one based on modal analysis using design spectrum analysis are examined. From these results an improved design seismic load for the equivalent lateral force procedure which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes are proposed.

  • Laminated rubber bearings are widely used as a key component in seismic isolation of structural systems subjected to earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings conditionally unstable similar to buckling of ordinary columns. The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling Toads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed As an analytical approach, the area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear, but the degree of conservatism is unknown. In order to complement analytical approaches, a non-linear finite element analysis can be used. In this paper, a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of elastomeric bearings is presented. From the load-displacement curve at each specified shear displacement, the buckling load can be obtained using the Southwell procedures. The results obtained are then compared against the theoretical predictions in order to examine the validity and the conservatism of the theoretical formulas.

  • Seismic behavior of 3-dimensional setback structures showing abrupt reductions of the floor size within the structure height and the effect of in-plane deformations of floor slabs on the seismic behavior of those structures are investigated. To find out general seismic behavior of 3-dimensional setback structures two parameters, level of setback(L/sub s/) and degree of setback(R/sub s/) are used. Analysis results obtained from forty eight setback structures show that a sudden change in story shear near setback level is occurred for irregular setback structures. The effect of in-plane deformation of floor slabs on the seismic behavior of setback structures is greatly influenced by the arrangement of lateral load resisting elements and it is more pronounced for frame-shear wall system showing large difference in stiffness among the lateral load resisting elements. The in-plane deformation of floor slabs results in reduced base shear, especially for FW-type structures with L/sub s/=1.0. Also, it brings about reduced story shear for the lateral load resisting element with shear wall and increase in story shear lot the lateral load resisting element without shear wall. The in-plane deformation of floor slabs at the base portion and/or tower portion due to difference in stiffness among the lateral load resisting elements brings about increment of floor displacements at all floor level.

  • In this study, nonlinear dynamic response of a concrete plate retrofit with Aluminium oxide ($Al_2O_3$) under seismic load and magnetic field is investigated. The plate is a composite reinforced by Aluminium oxide with characteristics of the equivalent composite being determined using Mori-Tanka model considering agglomeration effect. The plate is simulated with higher order shear deformation plate model. Employing nonlinear strains-displacements, stress-strain, the energy equations of column was obtained and using Hamilton's principal, the governing equations were derived. Differential quadrature method (DQM) in conjunction with Newark method is applied for obtaining the dynamic response of structure. The influences of magnetic field, volume percent of nanoparticles, geometrical parameters of column, agglomeration and boundary conditions on the dynamic response were investigated. Results showed that with increasing volume percent of nanoparticles, the dynamic deflection decreases.

  • Design criteria for limit state design of underground structures have already been published overseas, and research has been conducted to revise the design method in Korea. In order to estimate the probability of failure under seismic load, the probability variable should be considered in the reliability analysis. In this study, the failure probability of the existing shield tunnel segment lining design was calculated by applying the coefficient of variation (COV) for the earth pressure and the seismic load effect in consideration of the statistical characteristics of the domestic ground properties. Based on the results of calculating the reliability index (β) from the calculated probability of failure and analyzing the reliability index according to the change in the load factor and the results of domestic and foreign research, the target reliability index (βT) during earthquakes of shield tunnel segment lining is analyzed to be "2.3", it was proposed as the target reliability index for the design of the limit state under seismic load.

  • In this study 3- and 6-story flat plate structures designed only for gravity load are retrofitted with steel plates and braces and their seismic performances are evaluated to verify the effect of seismic retrofit. According to the analysis results obtained from nonlinear static analysis both the strength and stiffness are significantly enhanced as a result of the seismic retrofit. When buckling-restrained braces are used instead of conventional braces, the structures show more ductile behavior, especially in the 3-story structure.
