  • In order to know the characteristics of attenuation of coda wave in the Kyungsang Sedimetary Basin, quality faclity factor for coda wave (coda Q) is estimated from the earthquake data recorded in the KIGAM local seismic network. Thesingle scattering model for coda wave generation is adopted is adopted in estimating coda Q. In the present study, coda Q(Qc)is estimated in the range of $\alpha$=1.5~3.0, where $\alpha$ denotes the normalized time to S-wave travel time and expressed in terms of frequency (f). The deduced function in the range of 1 to 25 Hz is Qc=36.8283$f^{1.15095}$ which represents the strong dependence of coda Q on frequency. It is found that the difference of Qc between U-D, N-S, and E-W components is negligible. This fact suports the back scattering therory that coda wave originates from scattered waves by randomly distributed heterogenities in the crust On the other hand, it is observed that the coda Q increases with increasing epicentral distence. This observation suggests that QC increases with depth.

  • The scope of ISO/TC 108/SC 6, revised in accordance with Doc. ISO/TC 108/SC 6 N 35, September 1997, is as follows: Standardization in the field of vibration and shock generating systems, for test purposes (including environment, seismic and dynamic testing, calibration and diagnostics) as well as auxiliary equipment and instrumentation normally associated with it. Vibration and shock generating systems as an object of standardization within ISO/TC 108/SC 6 are only those systems that are used during vibration/shock testing to determine properties of a specimen. Vibration and shock systems being used in such processes as transportation, milling, compacting, metal working, etc., as parts of vibration control systems or household appliances and in health services, are not covered by ISO/TC 108/SC 6.

  • A lot of submerged tunnels which cross revers and channels have been constructed in the USA, European countries and Japan. It is very important to consider anti-seismicity of the tunnels when they are located in active seismic zone. Fortunately, the submerged tunnels have never been damaged by earthquakes, however a umber off surveys and experiments to examine the anti-seismicity of the submerged tunnels have been carried out from various points of view. the dynamic characteristics of the submerged tunnels which are buried in the ground and have long total length from that of the structures above ground. 'Specificitions of Earthquake Resistant Desion of Submerged Tunnels' was established by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers in 1975. These specifications greatly promote the construction of the submerged tunnels. In this technical paper, the outline of the construction and a few methods of earthquake resistant designs for the tunnels: earthquakes observations, indoor experiments by shaking table, and numerical analysis by computer are also mentioned.

  • Seismic pounding between adjacent buildings with inadequate separation and different dynamic characteristics can cause severe damage to the colliding buildings. Efficient estimation of the maximum pounding force is required to control the extent of damage in adjacent structures or develop an appropriate mitigation method. In this paper, an analytical approach on the basis of statistical relations is presented for approximate computation of extreme value of pounding force between two adjacent structures with equal or unequal heights subjected to stationary and non-stationary excitations. The nonlinearity of adjacent structures is considered using Bouc-Wen model of hysteresis and the pounding effect is simulated by applying the nonlinear viscoelastic model. It is shown that the proposed approach can significantly save computational costs by obviating the need for performing dynamic analysis. To assess the reliability and accuracy of the proposed approach, the results are compared with those obtained from nonlinear dynamic analysis.

  • In order to evaluate the seismic performance of a reinforced concrete building structure, four different analyses are carried out. Firstly, conventional pushover analysis with code-specified inverted triangular load pattern is conducted. Secondly, the pushover analysis with uniform load pattern is performed. Thirdly, adaptive pushover analyses with spectral amplification for both EC 8 artificial and Northridge earthquake are carried out. Lastly, Incremental dynamic analyses under a number of scaled PGA for both EC 8 artificial and Northridge earthquake record are performed. Comparative studies demonstrate that the adaptive pushover analysis may be able to explain the response characteristics that conventional pushover analysis with fixed load distribution fails to capture.

  • The estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity and earthquake is an important input parameter for seismic hazard assessment. In this study, the methods of recurrences interval estimation were reviewed and tentative calculation was performed for age dating data which have uncertainty. Age dating data come from previous studies of Ulsan fault system which is a well developed lineament in the southeastern part of korean Peninsula. Age dating for fault gouges, parent rocks, Quaternary sediments and veins were carried out by several researchers through various methods. Recurrence interval for fault activity was estimated on the basis of the age dating data of minor fault gouge and sediments during past 3Ma. The estimated recurrence interval was about 430-500 ka. Exact estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity need to compile more geological data and fault characteristics such as fault length, amount of displacement, slip rate and accurate fault movement age. In the future, the methods and results of fault recurrence interval estimation should be considered for establishing the criteria for domestic active fault definition.

  • One of the methods improving the seismic behavior of a structure is the frame with reduced beam section (RBS) which cuts a segment of flanges of the beam near the beam-to-column connection so that the section with reduced flanges has smaller flexural strength than the beam end. It is difficult to analyze the RBS frame because RBS portion has circular-cut type flange. And inelastic response of the steel frame with the RBS is very sensitive to the RBS model. In this paper, the analytical models of RBS portion are investigated and the results of the inelastic analysis for RBS analytical models are compared and then the analytical model for RBS is determined based on the results of inelastic analysis. Inelastic behavior of the RBS frame and its dynamic characteristics are investigated for selected analytical model of RBS.

  • In this paper, peliminary design procedure of magnetorheological (MR) dampers is developed for controlling the building response induced by seismic excitation. Hysteretic biviscous model which is simple and can describe the hysteretic characteristics of MR damper is used for parametric studies. The capacity of MR damper is determined as a portion of not the building weight but the lateral restoring force. A method is proposed for the optimal placement and number of MR dampers, and its effectiveness is verified by comparing it with the simplified search algorithm. Numerical results indicate that the capacity, number and the placement can be reasonably determined using the proposed design procedure.

  • This study investigates the optimum design parameters of a superelastic friction base isolator (S-FBI) system through a multi-objective genetic algorithm to improve the performance of isolated buildings against near-fault earthquakes. The S-FBI system consists of a flat steel-PTFE sliding bearing and superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) cables. Sliding bearing limits the transfer of shear across the isolation interface and provides damping from sliding friction. SMA cables provide restoring force capability to the isolation system together with additional damping characteristics. A three-story building is modeled with S-FBI isolation system. Multiple-objective numerical optimization that simultaneously minimizes isolation-level displacements and superstructure response is carried out with a genetic algorithm in order to optimize S-FBI system. Nonlinear time history analyses of the building with optimal S-FBI system are performed. A set of 20 near-fault ground motion records are used in numerical simulations. Results show that S-FBI system successfully control response of the buildings against near-fault earthquakes without sacrificing in isolation efficacy and producing large isolation-level deformations.
