  • In order to reduce seismic hazard the characteristics of strong earthquakes are required. In the region where strong earthquakes do not happen frequently the stochastic simulation of strong motion is an alternative way to predict strong motions. this simulation required input parameters such as the quality factor the corner frequency the moment magnitude the stress drop and so on which can be obtained from analyses of records of small and intermediate earthquakes. Using those parameters obtained in the previous work the strong ground motions are predicted employing the stochastic method, . The results are compared to the two observed earthquakes-the Ulsan Offshore Earthquake and the Kyungju Earthquake. Although some deviations are found the predictions are similar to the observed data. Finally we computed attenuation equations for PGA PGV and ground accelerations for some frequencies using the results of predictions. These results can be used for earthquake engineering and more reliable results will come out as earthquake observations continue.

  • The friction pendulum type seismic isolation system (FPS) has been developed to provide a simple and effective way to achieve earthquake resistance for buildings . The major advantages are: the isolation frequency can be easily achieved by designing a curvature of the surface and does not depend on the supported weight of a structure. The function of carrying vertical load is separated to the function of providing horizontal stiffness. Next the friction provides sufficient energy dissipation to protect the structure from earthquake response and resistance to the weak external disturbances such as wind load and ground vibrations due to traffic. In this paper, the friction coefficients are evaluated from number of experiments on the FPS test specimens. The relations between friction coefficient and the test waveform, velocity, and pressure are reviewed and further works are discussed.

  • Since the KTX was in operation in 2004, a number of researches on increasing the train speed have been conducted. Currently, the Honam High-speed train system is designed for the operation velocity of 350km/h. The societal demand expects higher operation speed, whereas the existing construction method and design specification are questioned in the KTX operation in the velocity over 350 km/h. In this study, a full-scale model test was conducted to obtain the preliminary data that is necessary to understand deformation characteristics of the reinforced road bed and the subgrade layers. In the full-scale model test, direct arrival seismic tests, crosshole seimic test, in-situ bender element test and sensing bar test were employed to measure the stiffness and deformation of the trackbed. The systematic analysis on the different set of measurements enhances the understanding of the behavior of the trackbed.

  • The design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. The slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders may bring about longer vibration periods that result in the reduced total seismic base shear.

  • In these days, The base isolation system is often used to improve the seismic capacity of the structures instead of conventional techniques of strengthening the structural members. The purpose of this study is to evaluate dynamic properties and mechanical characteristics of the 10tonf-LRB(Lead-Rubber Bearing). Experimental studies were performed to obtain the hysteretic behavior, effective shear stiffness( $K_{eff}$), equivalent damping( $H_{eq}$ ), capacity of energy dissipation( $W_{D}$) of six 10tonf-LRB. Especially, in this study, the response of the LRB for high loading frequency(0.5Hz~3.0Hz) was estimated. The effective shear stiffness of the LRB decreases and the capacity of energy dissipation increases as the shear strain amplitude increases. But the shear behavior of the LRB is not affected sensitively by loading frequency.y.y.

  • This paper is to investigate the micro-behavior of the double-span beams with WUF-W seismic connection under combined axial tension and moment and to propose the rational rotational capacity of it for progressive collapse-resistant analysis and design addressing the stress and strain transfer mechanism. To this end, the behavior of the double-span beams under the column missing event is first investigated using the advanced nonlinear finite element analysis. The characteristics of fracture indices of double-span beams with WUF-W connection under combined axial tension and flexural moment are addressed and then proposed the rational rotational capacity as the basic datum for the progressive collapse-resistant design and analysis. The distribution of fracture indices related to stress and strain for the double-span beams is investigated based on a material and geometric nonlinear finite element analysis. Furthermore, the micro-behavior for earthquake and progressive collapse is explicitly different.

  • Investigated in this paper is the effect of fluid-structure interaction between reactor internal components due to their immersion in a confining fluid on the dynamic responses. A non-linear mathematical model is developed for the dynamic analysis of the reactor internals, which includes lumped masses, stiffnesses and hydrodynamic couplings. The hydrodynamic mass matrix which characterizes the fluid-structure interaction is calculated. Also, the equations of motion containing hydrodynamic mass matrix are presented. The responses of the reactor internals due to seismic and pipe break excitations are obtained for the case of with- and without-hydrodynamic couplings and the different response characteristics are investigated.

  • The objective of this experiment is to observe the elastic and inelastic behaviors of high-rise reinforced concrete frames with nonseimic details. To do this, a building frame designed according to Korean seismic code and detailed in the Korean conventional manner was selected. An 1:12 scale plane frame model was manufactured according law. Reversed lateral load tests and monotonic push-over test were performed under the displacement control. To simulate the earthquake effect, the lateral force distribution was maintained to be an inversed triangular by using whiffle tree. From the tests, story displacements, lateral story forces, local plastic rotations and the relations between inter-story drift versus story shear are obtained. Based on the test results, conclusions on the characteristics of the elastic and behaviors of a high-rise reinforced concrete frame with nonseismic details are drawn.

  • In this study, ten drilled shafts were constructed for evaluating the application of NDT(Non-Destructive Testing) techniques. The drilled shafts, 0.4 m in diameter and 7.0 m in length, were constructed at Namyangju site in Namyangju City. One of the shafts was constructed with no defect, and the other shafts were constructed with the defects of soft bottom, necking, bulging, cave-in and/or weak concrete. Then, these techniques were applied to the bridge foundations for studying unknown bridge foundation characteristics.

  • The ASME strainers have been newly installed at the suction side of each reactor coolant pump to get rid of the foreign materials which may damage the pump impeller or interfere with the coolant path of fuel flow tube or primary plate type heat exchanger. The strainer was designed in accordance with ASME SEC. III, DIV. 1, Class 3 and the structural integrity was verified by seismic analysis. The screen was designed in accordance with the effective void area from the result of flow analysis for T-type strainer. After installation of the strainer, it was confirmed through the field test that the flow characteristics of primary cooling system were not adversely affected. The pressure loss coefficient was calculated by Darcy equation using the pressure difference through each strainer and the flow rate measured during the strainer performance test. And these are useful data to predict flow variations by the pressure difference.
