The 2017 Pohang earthquake caused damage to quay structures due to liquefaction. Liquefaction occurs when effective stress is lost due to an increase in excess pore water pressure during an earthquake. As a result, the damage caused to the pier-type quay wall was identified and the damage caused by liquefaction was analyzed. In addition, in the case of improved ground, damage occurred due to liquefaction of the lower sand layer due to the difference in stiffness from the soft rock layer, so additional numerical analysis was performed assuming non-liquefaction ground. There are several factors that affect the increase in excess pore water pressure ratio, such as the relative density of the ground and the magnitude of the input seismic acceleration. Therefore, this study performed numerical analysis for Cases 1 to 3 by increasing the magnitude of the input acceleration, and in the case of improved ground, damage occurred due to liquefaction of the lower sand layer, so the analysis was performed assuming non-liquefaction ground. As a result, the improved ground requires additional reinforcement when there is liquefied ground below, and the horizontal displacement of the pier-type quay piles was reduced by about two times.
This paper examines whether the "effective period" of bilinear isolation systems, as defined invariably in most current design codes, expresses in reality the period of vibration that appears in the horizontal axis of the design response spectrum. Starting with the free vibration response, the study proceeds with a comprehensive parametric analysis of the forced vibration response of a wide collection of bilinear isolation systems subjected to pulse and seismic excitations. The study employs Fourier and Wavelet analysis together with a powerful time domain identification method for linear systems known as the Prediction Error Method. When the response history of the bilinear system exhibits a coherent oscillatory trace with a narrow frequency band as in the case of free vibration or forced vibration response from most pulselike excitations, the paper shows that the "effective period" = $T_{eff}$ of the bilinear isolation system is a dependable estimate of its vibration period; nevertheless, the period associated with the second slope of the bilinear system = $T_2$ is an even better approximation regardless the value of the dimensionless strength,$Q/(K_2u_y)=1/{\alpha}-1$, of the system. As the frequency content of the excitation widens and the intensity of the acceleration response history fluctuates more randomly, the paper reveals that the computed vibration period of the systems exhibits appreciably scattering from the computed mean value. This suggests that for several earthquake excitations the mild nonlinearities of the bilinear isolation system dominate the response and the expectation of the design codes to identify a "linear" vibration period has a marginal engineering merit.

For analyzing seismic performance of long-span bridge for multi-support excitation and preparing technically and efficiently for a variety of design demands, the new module on multiple excitation was built in a reliable non-linear analysis program(RCAHEST) by using Influence Line Method, and the study on structures was performed previously. Also, the result of the analysis through RCAHEST was compared and verified with commercial finite element analysis program SAP2000 by using the feature of Multi-Support Excitation. From these results, nonlinear time history analysis considering multi-support excitation was studied after designing FE model of Incheon cable-stayed bridge. It was proved that the maximum response of horizontal displacement decreased as the time delay was increasing at all nodes of bridge. And then the serviceability of analysis model was evaluated by performing ultimate analysis under changes in maximum acceleration of seismic load data.

The paper describes a simple numerical FLAC model that was developed to simulate the dynamic response of two instrumented reduced-scale model reinforced soil walls constructed on a 1-g shaking table. The models were 1 m high by 1.4 m wide by 2.4 m long and were constructed with a uniform size sand backfill, a polymeric geogrid reinforcement material with appropriately scaled stiffness, and a structural full-height rigid panel facing. The wall toe was constructed to simulate a perfectly hinged toe (i.e. toe allowed to rotate only) in one model and an idealized sliding toe (i.e. toe allowed to rotate and slide horizontally) in the other. Physical and numerical models were subjected to the same stepped amplitude sinusoidal base acceleration record. The material properties of the component materials (e.g. backfill and reinforcement) were determined from independent laboratory testing (reinforcement) and by back-fitting results of a numerical FLAC model for direct shear box testing to the corresponding physical test results. A simple elastic-plastic model with Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for the sand was judged to give satisfactory agreement with measured wall results. The numerical results are also compared to closed-form solutions for reinforcement loads. In most cases predicted and closed-form solutions fall within the accuracy of measured loads based on ${\pm}1$ standard deviation applied to physical measurements. The paper summarizes important lessons learned and implications to the seismic design and performance of geosynthetic reinforced soil walls.

Robust semi-active vibration control of wind turbines using tuned mass dampers (TMDs) is a promising technique. This study investigates a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine controlled by eight different types of tuned mass damper systems of equal mass: a passive TMD, a semi-active varying-spring TMD, a semi-active varying-damper TMD, a semi-active varying-damper-and-spring TMD, as well as these four damper systems paired with an additional smaller passive TMD near the mid-point of the tower. The mechanism and controllers for each of these TMD systems are explained, such as employing magnetorheological dampers for the varying-damper TMD cases. The turbine is modelled as a lumped-mass 3D finite element model. The uncontrolled and controlled turbines are subjected to loading and operational cases including service wind loads on operational turbines, seismic loading with service wind on operational turbines, and high-intensity storm wind loads on parked turbines. The displacement and acceleration responses of the tower at the first and second mode shape maxima were used as the performance indicators. Ultimately, it was found that while all the semi-active TMD systems outperformed the passive systems, it was the semi-active varying-damper-and-spring system that was found to be the most effective overall - capable of controlling vibrations about as effectively with only half the mass as a passive TMD. It was also shown that by reducing the mass of the TMD and adding a second smaller TMD below, the vibrations near the mid-point could be greatly reduced at the cost of slightly increased vibrations at the tower top.
Seismic response of the liquid storage tanks isolated by the elastomeric bearings and sliding systems is investigated under near-fault earthquake motions. The fault normal and parallel components of near-fault motion are applied in two horizontal directions of the tank. The continuous liquid mass of the tank is modeled as lumped masses known as sloshing mass, impulsive mass and rigid mass. The corresponding stiffness associated with these lumped masses has been worked out depending upon the properties of the tank wall and liquid mass. It is observed that the resultant response of the isolated tank is mainly governed by fault normal component with minor contribution from the fault parallel component. Further, a parametric study is also carried out to study the effects of important system parameters on the effectiveness of seismic isolation for liquid storage tanks. The various important parameters considered are: aspect ratio of tank, the period of isolation and the damping of isolation bearings. There exists an optimum value of isolation damping for which the base shear in the tank attains the minimum value under near-fault motion. The increase of damping beyond the optimum value will reduce the bearing and sloshing displacements but increases the base shear. A comparative performance of five isolation systems for liquid storage tanks is also studied under normal component of near-fault motion and found that the EDF type isolation system may be a better choice for design of isolated tank in near-fault locations. Finally, it is also observed that the satisfactory response can be obtained by analysing the base-isolated tanks under simple cycloidal pulse instead of complete acceleration history.

In this study, the vibration control performance of high-rise building structures connected by a sky-bridge has been investigated. The philosophy of vibration control using sky-bridges is to allow structures with different dynamic characteristics to exert control forces upon one another through sky-bridges to reduce the overall responses of the system. The the high-rise building structure connected by sky-bridge with 49 and 42 stories was used in this study to investigate the displacement, acceleration, reaction of bearings and stress of sky-bridge by analytical methods. To this end, historical earthquakes, an artificial earthquake and wind force time histories obtained from wind tunnel tests were used. Based on the analytial results, the use of sky-bridge can be effective in reducing the structural responses of high-rise buildings against wind and seismic loads.

In this study, 1-g shaking table tests on the model of CFR(Concrete-Face Rockfill) type "D" dam in operation and the model of virtual ECRD(Earth Core Rockfill Dam) of which static stability is about the same compared to the model of CFRD were carried out. The purpose of this study is to compare the seismic performance of CFRD and ECRD from the analysis of model test results. Displacement response behavior of the dam was examined through the measurement of vertical and horizontal displacement of model dam crest. Also, amplification characteristics of accelerometers installed with dam height were examined through the measurement of acceleration with dam height. Also, in the case of ECRD, patterns of excess pore pressure generation with dam height were examined. From the test results, it was found that accelerations of dam crest of CFRD and ECRD were amplified about 1.52 times and 2 times compared to the accelerations of dam bottom, respectively. amplification was outstanding at three quarters of dam height from the bottom of dam. This phenomenon was outstanding in case of ECRD. And it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of CFRD were 6.8cm (0.1% of dam height) and 12.3cm (0.2% of dam height), respectively. Also, it was estimated that vertical and horizontal displacement of prototype dam of ECRD were 4.3cm (0.1% of dam height) and 5.5cm (0.11% of dam height), respectively.

Accurate modal identification analysis is required to reasonably perform a seismic qualification of safety-related electric equipment installed in nuclear power plants (NPPs). This study evaluates a variation of the modal properties of an electric equipment cabinet structure in NPPs according to the excitation levels. For the study, an actual electric equipment cabinet was selected as a specimen and was dynamically tested by using a portable exciter in accordance with the level of input vibration energy. Tests were classified into two sets: with-door cases, and without-door cases. Frequency response functions were computed from the signals of the acceleration responses and input motions measured from the vibration tests. A polynomial curve fitting algorithm was used to extract the modal properties from the frequency response functions. This study reviews the variation of the modal properties according to the variation of the excitation levels. The results of the study show that the modal frequencies and the modal dampings of the object specimen varies nonlinearly according to the excitation level of the test motion. Attaching the door increases the modal damping of the cabinet.

Steel plate concrete (SC) structure has been developed as a new structural type. Rational damping value shall be determined for the seismic design of SC structure. This study evaluated damping ratio of SC structure through experiments. For the study, a SC shear wall specimen was constructed and dynamically tested on the shaking table. Acceleration time history responses measured from testing were converted to the transfer functions and analyzed by using experimental modal analysis technique. The structural damping ratio of the specimen was identified as 4% to critical. Considering the shaking table test was performed at the excitation level corresponding to the low stress level of the specimen, 4% could be suggested as a structural damping for design of SC structure for operating basis earthquake.
