  • The segmentation of vessel including portal vein, hepatic vein and artery, from Computed Tomography (CT) images plays an important role in the therapeutic strategies for hepatic diseases. Representing segmented vessels in three dimensional spaces is extremely useful for doctors to plan liver surgery. In this paper, proposed method is focused on smoothing technique of segmented 3D liver vessels, which derived from 3D region growing approach. A pixel expand algorithm has been developed first to avoid vessel lose and disconnection cased by the next smoothing technique. And then a binary volume filtering technique has been implemented and applied to make the segmented binary vessel volume qualitatively smoother. This strategy uses an iterative relaxation process to extract isosurfaces from binary volumes while retaining anatomical structure and important features in the volume. Hard and irregular place in volume image has been eliminated as shown in the result part, which also demonstrated that proposed method is a suitable smoothing solution for post processing of fine vessel segmentation.

  • There are many image segmentation methods having bon published as the results of research so far, however these are for the noise images which can process an image under the general white noise environments. Therefore, these methods has the disadvantages because it is difficult to extract only the accurate parameters, which can distinguish between image and impulsive noise, from image with impulsive noises. So it has a problem about the potential decreasing of the performance according to the impulsive noise for all applications using the present quadtree segmentation. In this paper, we propose new quadtree segmentation using quartile deviation which can extract effectively the image information parameters from a noise image. Therefore our method can apply for various image processing fields because it has a advantage to distinguish an image information from noise image. As the result of simulation, we confirm that the proposed quadtree segmentation is more efficient than the present method when tested on impulsive noise image.

  • Infrared (IR) imaging is capable of detecting targets that are not visible at night, thus it has been widely used for the security and defense system. However, the quality of the IR image is often degraded by low resolution and noise corruption. This paper addresses target segmentation with the IR image. Multiple regions of interest (ROI) are extracted by the multi-level segmentation and targets are segmented from the individual ROI. Each level of the multi-level segmentation is composed of a k-means clustering algorithm an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and a decision process. The k-means clustering algorithm initializes the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and the EM algorithm iteratively estimates those parameters. Each pixel is assigned to one of clusters during the decision. This paper proposes the selection and the merging of the extracted ROIs. ROI regions are selectively merged in order to include the overlapped ROI windows. In the experiments, the proposed method is tested on an IR image capturing two pedestrians at night. The performance is compared with conventional methods showing that the proposed method outperforms others.

  • Satellite imageries are at a greatest importance for land cover examining. Numerous studies have been conducted with satellite images and uses semantic segmentation techniques to extract information which has higher altitude viewpoint. The device which is taking these images must employee wireless communication links to send them to receiving ground stations. Wireless communications from a satellite are inevitably affected due to transmission errors. Evidently images which are being transmitted are distorted because of the information loss. Current semantic segmentation techniques are not made for segmenting distorted images. Traditional image enhancement methods have their own limitations when they are used for satellite images enhancement. This paper proposes an auto-encoder based image pre-enhancing method for satellite images. As a distorted satellite images dataset, images received from a real radio transmitter were used. Training process of the proposed auto-encoder was done by letting it learn to produce a proper approximation of the source image which was sent by the image transmitter. Unlike traditional image enhancing methods, the proposed method was able to provide more applicable image to a segmentation model. Results showed that by using the proposed pre-enhancing technique, segmentation results have been greatly improved. Enhancements made to the aerial images are contributed the correct assessment of land resources.

  • In this paper, we propose an image-to-image translation approach based on the conditional generative adversarial network for semantic segmentation. Semantic segmentation is the task of clustering parts of an image together which belong to the same object class. Unlike the traditional pixel-wise classification approach, the proposed method parses an input RGB image to its corresponding semantic segmentation mask using a pixel regression approach. The proposed method is based on the Pix2Pix image synthesis method. We employ residual connections-based convolutional neural network architectures for both the generator and discriminator architectures, as the residual connections speed up the training process and generate more accurate results. The proposed method has been trained and tested on the NYU-depthV2 dataset and could achieve a good mIOU value (49.5%). We also compare the proposed approach to the current methods in semantic segmentation showing that the proposed method outperforms most of those methods.

  • This paper proposes an image segmentation technique using watershed algorithm followed by region merging method. A gradient image is obtained by applying multiscale gradient algorithm to the image simplified by morphological filters. Since the watershed algorithm produces the oversegmented image. it is necessary to merge small segmented regions as wel]' as region having similar characteristics. For region merging. we utilize the merging criteria based on both the mean value of the pixels of each region and the edge intensities between regions obtained by the contour following process. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces meaningful image segmentation results.

  • In this paper, we present a robust region segmentation method based on the watershed transformation of a pseudo-distance map (PDM). A usual approach for the segmentation of a gray-scale image with the watershed algorithm is to apply it to a gradient magnitude image or the Euclidean distance map (EDM) of an edge image. However, it is well known that this approach suffers from the oversegmentation of the given image due to noisy gradients or spurious edges caused by a thresholding operation. In this paper we show thor applying the watershed algorithm to the EDM, which is a regularized version of the EDM and is directly computed form the edgestrength function (ESF) of the input image, significantly reduces the oversegmentation, and the final segmentation results obtained by a simple region-merging process are more reliable and less noisy than those of the gradient-or EDM-based methods. We also propose a simple and efficient region-merging criterion considering both boundary strengths and inner intensities of regions to be merged. The robustness of our method is proven by testing it with a variety of synthetic and real images.

  • In this paper. a method for color image segmentation using region merging is proposed. A inhomogeneity which exists in image is reduced by smoothing with non-linear filtering. saturation enhancement and intensity averaging in previous step of image segmentation. and a similar regions are segmented by non-uniform quantization using zero-crossing information of color histogram. A edge strength of initial region is measured using high frequency energy of wavelet transform. A candidate region which is merged in next step is selected by doing this process. A similarity measure for region merging is processed using Euclidean distance of R. G. B color channels. A Proposed method can reduce an over-segmentation results by irregular light sources et. al, and we illustrated that the proposed method is reasonable by simulation.

  • We propose a two-stage document layout segmentation method. At the first stage, as top-down segmentation, morphological distance map algorithm extracts a collection of rectangular regions from a given input image. This preliminary result from the first stage is employed as input parameters for the process of next stage. At the second stage, a machine-learning algorithm is adopted RBF network, one of neural networks based on statistical model, is selected. In order for constructing the hidden layer of RBF network, a data clustering technique bared on the self-organizing property of Kohonen network is utilized. We present a result showing that the supervised neural network, trained by 300 number of sample data, improves the preliminary results of the first stage.

  • In this paper, we propose color image segmentation by region merging method preserving the boundary of an object. The proposed method selects initial region by using quantized image's index map after vector quantizing an original image. After then, we merge regions by applying boundary restricted factor in order to consider the boundary of an object in HSI color space. Also we merge the regions in RGB color space for non-processed regions in HSI color space. And we reduce processing time by decreasing iterative process in region merging algorithm. Experimental results have demonstrated the superiority in region's segmentation results and processing time for various images.
