  • Recently, precast PSC girder bridges have been widely applied for short and middle span bridges. The construction of the spliced girder bridges has been increasing to overcome the length limit of girder and transportation restrictions. In case of the spliced girder, the integrity of the segmental joints is very important to secure the structural soundness of bridge because the discontinuity on the segmental joints between adjacent segments could be vulnerable point. The study of segmental joint behavior with different influence factors of joint type, shear key installation, confining force is very important. In this research, finite element analysis and scaled model test with different shear key shapes and confining forces were carried out and the comparative study was performed to evaluate the segmental joint behavior of precast spliced PSC girder bridge. It was confirmed that the installation of shear key with height and depth ratio of 1/2~1/3 and applying of confining force of 1/2 of the concrete strength at the joint was effective in improving the integrity of segmental joint. In addition, the field loading test for existed precast spliced PSC girder bridge was performed and the measurement of the difference of deflection between adjacent segments at segmental joint was proposed as the assessment solution of the integrity of segmental joint.

  • To overcome limitations of conventional diagnosis and planning for orthognathic surgery, surgeons have begun to use 3-dimensional (3D) virtual simulation to plan complex orthognathic surgery. In many literatures, it has shown that better surgical outcome achieved with 3D virtual simulation than that with conventional methods. But, there is still lack of data about accuracy of maxillary segmental surgery with 3D virtual simulation. The purpose of this paper was to report the case of maxillary segmental orthognathic surgery with 3D virtual simulation and to assess the actual surgical outcome. Though the result was clinically acceptable, discrepancy between 3D simulation and actual surgery was not superior compared with conventional method. The accuracy of 3D simulation surgery and intermediate wafer fabrication for maxillary segmental surgery needs to be improved. Advancement in 3D software program and careful surgical technique will make it more precise and reliable method.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of precast segmental PSC bridge columns with regard to P-delta effects. A model of precast segmental PSC bridge columns was tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. In addition to the material nonlinear properties, an algorithm for the problem of large displacement that may result in additional deformation has been formulated using total Lagrangian formulation. This study documents the testing of precast segmental PSC bridge columns under cyclic loading, and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.

  • The accurate estimation of segmental duration is crucial for natural-sounding text-to-speech synthesis. For predicting Korean segmental durations, conventional methods utilized phonemic context, part-of-speech context and locational information in prosodic phrase. In this paper, the tonal information of phonemes is employed for more accurate prediction. After defining two non-boundary tones and six boundary tones, we annotated the tonal label on each syllable of 400 sentences. To predict segmental duration using tonal information, we constructed neural networks with a real-valued output node predicting phonemic duration and trained them by backpropagation algorithm. Experimental results showed that the proposed features are effective for predicting Korean segmental durations, and we got 0.863 correlation coefficient of the observed durations and predicted ones.

  • The method of reinforced earth walls has grown remarkably and the frequency of utilization has been increased on a national scale thereafter introduced in the middle 1980s in Korea. Furthermore the construction case of the extensive Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls had been increased. Currently, the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA mainly used in Korea suggest determining the horizontal distance of the upper/lower retaining wall based on the study results of the internal stability and the external stability of Segmental Retaining Walls but in many cases are not suitable for the actual situation in Korea. Therefore, in this study reviewed the design criterion of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Segmental Retaining Walls, performed the internal and external stability in Paju, Gyeonggi-do based on the design criterion of FHWA and NCMA, suggested the modified design criterion of FHWA with analyzing the results, and performed the stability analysis for the internal and external stability and the compound failure. Moreover for the confirmation of the modified FHWA design standard, the suggestion and the analysis of the numerical analysis approaching method using shear strength reduction technique were performed and the design cases utilized the modified FHWA design standard based on the study analysis were introduced.

  • Primary segmental volvulus of the small intestine is not associated with malrotation, malfixation of the midgut, nor other primary small bowel lesions such as small bowel tumors. This entity is known to be more prevalent in adult and in certain global areas associated with particular diet habits. There have been very few reports in neonates, but not in this country so far. The author reports two cases of primary segmental volvulus. Case 1 was a septic 4-day-old girl with hematochezia due to jejunal volvulus with partial necrosis and panperitonitis. Resection of the segment and Bishop-Koop enterostomy were successful. Case 2 was a 3-day-old boy, who had ileal volvulus with ultra-short length of ileal atresia, probably due to intrauterine segmental volvulus. Limited resection of the atresia and spreading of the mesenteric base were enough to recovery. The rarity of the pathognomonic findings and limitation of the diagnostic workup due to rapid progression limit early diagnosis and good survival rate in this particular condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of precast concrete copings for precast segmental PSC bridge columns and to provide the details and reference data. Twelve one-fourth-scale precast concrete copings were tested under quasistatic monotonic loading. In this study, the computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used. A joint element is modified to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. This study documents the testing of precast concrete copings for precast segmental PSC bridge columns and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the CT findings of hepatic hypereosinophilic syndrome in which hepatic lobes or segments were involved. Materials and Methods: Seven patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome with hepatic lobar or segmental involvement were included in our study. In all seven, diagnosis was based on liver biopsy and the results of corticosteroid treatment. CT findings were retrospectively reviewed by three radiologists, who reached a consensus. Biopsy specimens were examined, with special reference to portal and periportal inflammation. Results: CT demonstrated well-defined, homogeneous or heterogeneous low attenuation with a straight margin limited to a hepatic lobe (n = 2), segments (n = 3), or subsegments (n = 2), particularly during the portal phase. Where there was subsegmental involvement, lesions were multiple, ovoid or wedge-shaped, and showed low attenuation. In two patients with lobar or segmental involvement, segmental portal vein narrowing was observed. Histopathologic examination disclosed eosinophilic infiltration in the periportal area, sinusoids and central veins, as well as portal phlebitis. Conclusion: Hypereosinophilic syndrome may involve the presence of hepatic lobar, segmental, or subsegmental low-attenuated lesions, as seen on CT images. Their presence may be related to damage of the liver parenchyma and to portal phlebitis.

  • A numerical procedure is developed to analyze the time-dependent behavior of prestressed concrete bridges constructed by the segmental cantilever method. The developed computer program accounts for the time-dependent properties of prestressed concrete materials due to the varing modulus of elasticity, creep and shrinkage of concrete and the stress relaxation of prestressing steel. It also accounts for the stiffness increase due to the presence of the steel reinforcements and the effects of the shear deformation of the prestressed concrete bridge girders. The program is applied to a multi-span continuous segmental prestressed concrete bridge to demonstrate its capabilities.
