  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of the midsummer drainage times and some growth regulators on lodging characters, lodging and yield in puddled-soil drill seeding in rice. Dongjinbyeo, the mid-late maturing rice variety was seeded at May 11 by seeding machine with 4cm of furrow depth. Experimental plots were divided two main treatment without midsummer drain and two time drains (30 and 50 days after seeding), Inabenfide(IBF) was applied 40days before heading(DBH) and IBP was applied at 30DBH, respectively. Culm length was shorten, the wall of N$_4$ was thicken, and the breaking weight was increased at two time drainage and growth regulators applied in order of Inabenfide, IBP, and Control. Lodging wasn't occurred at two time drainage but it was occurred at none drainage in the order of Control, IBP, and Inabenfide applied. Yield was higher at two time drainage compared with none drainage and higher in order of Inabenfide, IBP and Control in none drainage but wasn't significantly different among growth regulators applied in two time drainage. Therefore, two times midsummer soil drying is recommendable management method for puddled -soil drill seeding of rice. • Changes in rice yield and soil chemistry of dry seeded rice in double cropping of rice and barley were investigated at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station during 5 years (1990-1994). Barley straw added or removed dry seeding had safe rice seedling stand for good rice production. However, the coefficient of variation of seedling stand by year was higher than dry seeding in rice single crop. Rice seedling height was slightly reduced by barley straw incorporation. However, it recovered soon as rice growing progressed. Heading time delayed 4 days in flat seeding method but not in high-ridged seeding method which imply that. this is more safe seeding technology than flat seeding method. Comparing to rice single crop, barley straw added dry seeding increased rice yield by 2∼19%(Average of 5 years: 8%) from second year due to higher panicle and spikelet number. Contents of organic matter was 2.71% in 1990. In 1994, it decreased 2.61% for rice single crop, while increased 3.02% and 3.41% for barley straw removed or added field, respectively. Rice grain quality was not significantly different among cropping patterns.

  • This study has been conducted from April 25, 1999 to June 25, 1999 in Jeju Province in order to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, yield and chemical composition of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 decreased the plant height of Kenaf from 278.5 cm to 205.7 cm. As for the number of leaves, number of withering leaves, number of branches, and stem diameter decreased as the seeding date was delayed. As the seeding date was delayed, fresh forage yield decreased from 98.5MT/㏊ to 45.9MT/㏊, dry matter yield from 20.7MT/㏊ to 8.2MT/㏊, crude protein (CP) yield from 2.9MT/ha to 1.3MT/ha and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield form 1l.6MT/㏊ to 5MT/㏊. However, both leaf yield and stem yield were nearly the same tendency. Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 increased crude protein contents of leaves from 21.5% to 24.4%, crude fat contents from 5.2% to 6.1%, nitrogen free extract (NFE) contents form 39.9% to 41.2% and TDN contents from 64.3% to 69.7%. However, delaying seeding date decreased crude fiber contents from 20.8% to 17.5%, and crude ash contents from 7.9% to 7.0%. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Kenaf seems to be about 25 April in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of Jeju island.

  • Drainage duration before seeding and furrow depth desirable for establishment and growth in direct drill seeding of rice on puddled paddy soil were investigated. Furrow depths tested were 2, 4 and 6cm in combination with drainage duration 2, 4, and 6days. Dongjinbyeo was used and seeded on May 11, 1993. Seedling establishment were improved by longer drainage duration and by shallower furrow. Lodging occurred moderately at furrow depth of 2cm with 4 and 6days of surface drainage before seeding. This lodging might be attributable to the shallow burying of shoot below soil surface. Rice yield was highest at furrow depth of 4cm with 4days drainage before seeding. In considering seedling establishment and yield, desirable drainage duration before seeding and furrow depth might be 4days and 4cm, respectively. Cone(115g) penetration depth, dropped at 1m above soil surface, was 6 to 7cm on the date after 4days drainage before seeding.

  • To know possibility of raw ginseng production for white- and red-ginseng by direct-sowing culture, seeds were directly sowed or seedlings were transplanted at soil condition of sandy loam in ginseng field. After cultivation, the characters of 5-year-old ginseng were investigated. Number of survived plants was increased with increase the seeding quantity in direct-sowing culture, the survived plants in direct-sowing culture was higher than that of transplanting one. Rate of the numbers of survived plants to numbers of seeds sowed in plots of 134 or 90 seeds sowed per tan, 180 x 90cm area, inspire of high number of survived plant was high compared to that of transplanting culture. Occurrence rate of rusty root of ginseng in direct-sowing culture was low significantly compared to that of transplanting culture. Root yield showed in the order of 134, 268, 90 seeds sowed, the values of yield in direct-sowing culture were high obviously compared to that of transplanting one. Individual root weight was increased with decrease the seeding quantity, however, the root weight in plot of 90 seeds sowed showed almost equal the weight in transplanting culture. The number of usable raw ginseng for white- and red-ginseng was increased with decrease of the seeding quantity; the numbers were higher than that of transplanting culture remarkably. We concluded that optimum seedling rate in direct-sowing culture of ginseng was 90 to 134 seeds per tan considering the yield per area and production rate of large root.

  • Synthetic and biosynthetic vascular grafts of small diameter have long been considered to be prone to thrombosis, ultimately leading to the complete graft occlusion. Endothelial cell seeding onto synthetic blood-contacting surfaces has been suggested to be an ideal means to solve this problem. This study described a culture method of bovine endothelial cells and evaluated blood-compatibility and seeding efficiency of cultured endothelial cells. Bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells were harvested enzymatically and grown to confluence on polystyrene culture flask surfaces using established techniques. The identification of endothelial cells was made through the demonstration of expression of factor VIII R:Ag by immunofluorescent technique. To quantitate the effect of improvement in blood-compatibility of viable endothelial cells, endothelial monolayers were exposed to blood containing $\^$111/In-oxine labeled platelets. Viable endothelial monolayers retained less labeled platelets than control surfaces. The Indium-labeled endothelial cells were seeded onto three different blood-contacting surfaces of Dacron vascular graft immobilized in specially equipped wells and incubated for specific time intervals (t=15, 30, 60, 120 minutes). Longer incubation times showed improved cell adherence in collagen-coated and fibrin-coated Dacron vascular graft groups. However in untreated Dacron grafts, no direct relationship was observed between incubation time and endothelial cell seeding efficiency. This may be due to leakage of endothelial cells through porosity of Dacron grafts in this in-vitro experimental condition.

  • For low-emissivity application on window glass, coalescence of thin film silver islands is crucial for high transmittance in the visible and high reflectance in the infrared. It is well known that the underlayer affects the growth mode. In this work, the effect of the underlayer on the growth of silver films deposited by filtered cathodic vacuum arc is discussed. While a nominal 0.1 nm niobium underlayer has promoted the coalescence of silver islands, a 0.2 nm layer did not show these features. From a thermodynamic approach, Nb seeding less one monolayer is considered to reduce the surface energy between the silver atoms and $Nb/TiO_2$ surface, resulting the change of its growth from 3D islands to 2D-layer modes. If the seed layer exceeds one monolayer, however, a rougher surface is formed because the surface energy of Nb itself is superior to that of $Nb-TiO_2$. The onset of silver layer on the roughened Nb surface is required more silver.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the herbicidal efficacy of carfentrazone-ethyl mixtures in direct-seeding flooded rice. The efficacy of three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures was greater than pyrazosulfuron-ethyl pyriminobac-methyl GR (PP GR). Weeding efficacy of three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures was more than 96.9%. No phytotoxic effect was observed in the rice based on the plant height and the number of tillers. Yield of rice un three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures application was more than both in the PP GR and in the hand weeding. Based on these data, three different carfentrazone-ethly mixtures can be applied to provide an effective weed management in direct-seeding flooded rice.

  • Synthesis of nanocrystalline diamond powder was investigated via a gas-to-particle scheme using the hot filament chemical vapor deposition. Effect of substrate surface seeding by nano diamond powder, and that of the electrical conductance of the substrate were studied. The substrate temperature, methane content in the precursor gas, filament-substrate distance and filament temperature were $670^{\circ}C$, 5% methane in hydrogen, 10 mm and $2400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The powder formation by gas-to-particle mechanism were greatly enhanced by the substrate seeding by the nano diamond powder. It was attributed to the removal of the electrostatic force between the substrate and the seeded nano diamond particle by the thermal electron shower from the hot filament, via the depolarization of the substrate surface or the attached diamond powder and subsequent levitation into the gas phase to serve as the gas-phase nucleation site. The powder formation was greatly favoured by the conducting substrate relative to the insulating substrate, which proved the actual effect of the electric static force in the powder formation.

  • The effect of planting time and density of soybean on the yield component and yield when intercropped within barley rows or seeded after harvest was evaluated. Early maturing barley variety 'Olbori' was seeded at 2 levels of planting density 40 ${\times}$ 18 and 60 ${\times}$ 18 (row-hill space in em), and the soybean, variety "Dongbuktae", was seeded on June 1 as a inter-crop, June 15 and 30 as a afterharvest crop, all 2 levels of row space (40, 60 cm) and 3 levels of hill space (10, 15, 20 em). Soybean yield was increased in the following conditions: early seeding of soybeans within rows at 60 ${\times}$ 20 em density and soybean seeding after barley harvest at 40 ${\times}$ 20 em density./TEX> 20 em density.
