The experiment was tried to identify culture media which was suitable for seed germination and seedling growth of wild orchids, Calanthe discolor and Habenaria radiata. When seeds of Calanthe discolor, which was treated with ultrasonics for 30 minutes, were sowed in Murashige and SKoog(MS) medium, germination was much more promoted than other treatments. Seedling of C. discolor grew more rapidly in 3g/L Hyponex and 2g/L tryptone(H$_3$T$_2$) medium and 3g/L Hyponex and 2g/L peptone(H$_3$P$_2$) medium, especially in H$_3$P$_4$ medium among those media, pseudobulb became more corpulent. Habenaria radiata, whose tubers were obtained from seedlings, were sprouted more vigorously in 3g/L Hyponex and 1g/L peptone(H$_3$P$_1$) medium and 1g/L Hyponex and 2g/L peptone(H$_1$P$_2$) medium; but multiplication of tubers, growth of daughter tubers and its corpulence were well established in 1g/L Hyponex and 2g/L peptone(H$_1$P$_2$) medium.
This study was carried out to investigate seed bulbs production of 'Namdo' garlic (Allium sativum L.) by treating with 200 mM $K_3PO_4$ and 200 mM $KNO_3$ solution to bulbils. The growth characteristics of garlic plants derived from bulbils sown on 3 different dates were compared to those of plants derived from non-treated bulbils. Time required for 50% shoot emergence ($T_{50}$) was shortened as the sowing dates delayed. However, the final emergence rate was increased in the early sowing dates, and was high when treated with $K_3PO_4$ and sown on Oct. 10. The % clove differentiation of bulb was not significantly affected by sowing date and chemicals treatment of the bulbils. In all treatments, % clove differentiation was greater than 85%. The average bulb weight was increased with earlier sowing. Bulbils treated with $K_3PO_4$ and sown on Oct. 10 exhibited the best growth and yield. which was 27% higher compared to the non-treated bulbils.
The red pepper seeds(RPS), an industrial waste produced from red pepper powder industry, were investigated for its possible use as natural hot taste seasoning. The RPS was extracted with water with addition of salt, sugar, phosphate and citric acid at 70-100$^{\circ}C$ Effects of preheat treatments of steaming at 100$^{\circ}C$ and roasting at 215$^{\circ}C$ and 330$^{\circ}C$ were also studied on the flavor of the RPS extracts. The results showed that steaming and roasting increased the solid yield and reduced the turbidity. The hot flavor of RPS extracts was generally decreased by steaming and roasting. Extraction of RPS at the temperature range of 70-100$^{\circ}C$ for 10-60 minutes showed that solid yield were relatively high of 27% at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes with the highest score of hot flavor. When the extraction was carried out with addition of NaCl, sucrose, Na$_2$HPO$_4$ and citric acid, the solid yield was little affected by their addition except a little increase by 0.5% NaCl and 0.2% Na$_2$HPO$_4$ and hot flavor was little affected.
This study was aimed to select useful mutants of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and leaf mustard (Brassica juncea L.), the seeds of three lines S-14, S-27, and S-28 were treated with gamma-ray and EMS. The optimum ranges of gamma-ray dose and EMS concentration to enlarge the characteristic morphological variations were also separately investigated. The survival rates of S-28 only linearly decreased with increasing the gamma-ray dose. The overall growth parameters decreased of gamma-ray dose in all three lines of S-14, S-27, and S-28. The reduction dosage 50 of gamma-ray was identified as 1,200 Gy for S-14 leaf mustard, while those of S-27 and S-28 rapeseed lines were appeared as same 1,000 Gy. The emergence rates of S-14 and S-27 showed no significant differences by EMS treatment, while the growth of all three lines were significantly decreased. The reduction concentration 50 in S-14 could not be determined, demonstrating that this leaf mustard line is presumably insensitive to mutagenic EMS, while those in S-27 and S-28 were identified as 3.0 and 2.5%, respectively, showing that these rapeseed lines possess higher sensitivity to EMS than S-14. Various morphological characteristics of $M_1$ generation obtained from mutagen treatment were elaborately investigated for further maintenance of $M_2$ generation. In $M_2$ generation variants showing short stem, yellow color in seed coat, chlorophyll deficiencies in leaf or pod, abnormal flower color were selected as potentially useful mutants for breeding.

Chamaecyparis obtusa is one of the economical conifers planted in Korea due to its good quality timber and wood characteristics. Individuals of C. obtusa containing high terpenes (HT) and low terpenes (LT) were selected for by colorimetric method. The HT of C. obtusa was delayed in wilting against various abiotic stresses compared to the LT plants. The HT group exposed to UV did not significant influence the chlorophyll content, and the chlorophyll value was higher in the HT group than the LT group. Also, chilling treatment (5℃) did not significant influence on the chlorophyll content. However treatment at -4℃ showed relatively low chlorophyll content in the LT group than the HT group. Plants exposure to high temperature was not a difference between the HT and the LT group. However, treatment at 38℃ influenced the chlorophyll content that was increased exposure time-dependently. In salt treatments, chlorophyll in the HT group was lower at high concentrations (300 and 500 mM) of NaCl. However, chlorophyll content increased to slightly in treatment time-dependently, which is 6.7% to 40%. H2O2 treatment has been a negative effect on the chlorophyll content in the HT group. All concentration of H2O2 decreased the chlorophyll content of 5% to 35%. Plants containing high terpenoids were resisted against some abiotic stress such as salt and H2O2. Our results implied that terpenoids could cause various abiotic stress resistance. These results could be utilized for efficient management and biomass production during forest silvicultures.

Objective: A feeding trial was carried out to determine the effect of dietary inclusion of silymarin seed extract on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, excreta microbiota, excreta gas emission, blood profiles, and meat quality in broilers. Methods: A total of 1,088 one-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks (mixed-sex) with an initial body weight of 42.34±0.82 g, were randomly allocated into 1 of 4 dietary treatments with 17 replicates of 16 chicks per cage and fed a basal diet supplemented with 0%, 0.02%, 0.04%, and 0.06% of silymarin. Results: The inclusion of silymarin supplementation linearly increased the body weight of broilers during days 7 to 21 and 1 to 35 days. On day 35, broilers fed a diet containing graded levels of silymarin supplementation linearly increased the nutrient digestibility of dry matter, gross energy, and nitrogen and cecal Lactobacillus counts (p = 0.038). While silymarin supplement linearly reduced the methyl mercaptans (p = 0.039) and acetic acid (p = 0.007) emission in broilers. No significant effects were observed on the blood profile. Relative weights of organs such as breast muscle, bursa of fabricius were increased (linear effect, p<0.05), water holding capacity was enhanced by increasing the silymarin level from 0% to 0.06%. A linear reduction (p>0.05) in drip loss from meat samples during days 1, 3, 5, and 7 by the addition of graded level of silymarin to the diet. Conclusion: An increasing level of silymarin supplementation to the diet of broiler would be beneficial to enhance growth performance, nutrient digestibility, excreta microflora, blood profile, and meat quality traits.

The experiment was conducted at the growth chamber to determine germination, seedling growth and fresh weight between the untreated control and iron-coated seeds in germination test of the rice seeds. There was of 95% germination in rice seeds regardless of treatments and days for seedling emergence was relatively 13-14days. Seedling height was 4.9cm of the iron-coated seeds but 0.4cm of the untreated control and there was 6.S roots of seedling in iron-coated seeds and 5.5 roots of seedling in the untreated control, respectively. The fresh weight of seedling was 107mg of the iron-coated seeds and 66mg of the untreated control at 35days after sowing.
This study was designed to know difference in degree of dehardening and rehardening respectively by artificial high and low temperature treatments among different clonal seedlings and seedlings from different seed sources of Cryptomeria japonica which have been grown under the cold areas in Japan and Korea. High temperature treatment was done with 15 to $20^{\circ}C$ under 100% relative humidity for one to nine days and low temperature treatment was carried with $-7^{\circ}C$ for one to three days. Occasionaly, high temperature treatment was combined and followed by low temperature treatment. The ability of stem section to delay dehardening by high temperature treatment and/or to hasten rehardening by low temperature treatment was used as an indicator of adaptability under extreme temperature fluctuation in nature. Clones and seedlings from different seed sources which showed greater freezing resistance than others after artificial high and/or low temperature treatments were selected over two to three time periods: early winter, mid winter and early spring in 1977 to 1980. These were Seoul #7, and #9, Namboo #3, and #4, Sung-Kang #11, Chung-Sam #8 and Huek-Suk #9. These selected seedlings might have survival advantage to withstand early and late frost damage, especially the critical frost damage of the basal stem, since it was known to be induced by lowering freezing resistance of the basal part when exposed to the high temperature near the ground during the day. Large variation in freezing resistance and degree of dehardening and rehardening was found among clonal or seed sources and among individuals within a seed source, but was not related to the difference in climatic conditions where the parent trees was selected. These indicated the possibility of future breeding work for more cold resistant family of Cryptomeria japonica.
Germination of Codonopsis pilosula seeds and afterward their seedling emergence have been occasionally very poor due to their dormancy and structural defects. The study was done to determine the treatment effects of priming, $GA_3$, agitation and washing during and after priming, drying and water imbibition after drying on germination of its seeds and then of the successive three combined treatment after priming on the its seedling emergence to model its presown seed treatment. While agitation at the speed of 10 rpm was made or not, priming using $Ca(NO_3)_2$ and $GA_3$ under their different concentrations and light quality illuminated for 12 hours a day were done separately. Then their two best results were compared to determine the better one. Using the above determined best result, washing was done 3 minutes in the tap water or not, and drying of washed seeds was made under 4 different lights, and water imbibition of the dried seeds with differed period were successively done to deduce its presown seed treatment. In the comparison of the best germination rate of priming and $GA_3$, the former showed considerably higher rate than the latter; the priming treatment was done at agitated $Ca(NO_3)_2$ 150 mM solution under darkness or 12 hour red light illumination a day for 2 days. Washing after priming enhanced the rate compared to no-washing. Drying was the best way at which seeds washed were desiccated under $35^{\circ}C$ and 4 hour red light illumination. Water imbibition immediately before sowing must be made for 2 days. Seedling emergence rate was the highest at the seeds from successive 4 treatments, priming, washing, drying and water imbibition before sowing of two others, the priming and washing, or the priming, washing and water imbibition, meaning that its presown seed treatment must follow the procedure of the above 4 successive ones.

This experiment was carried out to study the influence of temperature treatments on germination of sorghum (cv. Pioneer 931), sorghum-sudangrass (cv. Pioneer 988), sudangrass (cv. Piper) and corn (cv. Suweon 19) in growth chamber. Each crop seeds were germinated under different day/night temperature of 10/5, 15/10, 20/15, 25/20, 30/25, 35/30 and $40/35^{\circ}C$ over 14/10 hour days. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. Germination of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass were less affected by high temperature than those of corn and sudangrass. The optimum temperatures for germination were $20-40^{\circ}C$ for sorghum and $20-30^{\circ}C$ for corn. High temperature($40/35^{\circ}C$), however, resulted in great decrease of seed germination rates of seed germination rates of corn, while those of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass shown high germination rates with the value of 95.8% and 89.9%, respectively. 2. Sorghum-sudangrass hybrid was shown to have a great tolerance to low temperature. Under low temperature($10/5^{\circ}C$) seed germination of sorghum-sudangrass was 80.0% but those of corn and sudangrass were 43.2% and 24.8% respectively. Germination rates of sorghum were decreased to about 68.8% at low temperature from a value of 98.1% at optimum temperature. 3. The days required to the seed germination of sorghum and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid were shortened by increasing of temperature. Under different temperature treatments, it was required 12 days ($15/10^{\circ}C$), 6 days ($25/20^{\circ}C$) and 3 days ($40/35^{\circ}C$) in sorghum but corn required 16, 7 and 3 days, respectively.
