Objective: The objectives of this preliminary study was to develop cost-effective and accessible self-intervention program and to assess the effects of music listening self intervention program for Hwa-byung patients, who had undergone conflicts with family and economical problems, in quantity and quality. Subjects: Seven middle age women who bad been diagnosed with Hwa-byung by Hwa-Byung Diagnotic interview Schedule participated in this program. Method: Participants learned music listening techniques and visited hospital three times a week during 2 weeks. Music-listening self intervention for Hwa-byung patients was consisted of three sad musics(in minor) and three sedative musics(in major) and perlO1med at home for 2 weeks. Patient's somatic symptoms and self awareness (of Hwa-byung scale), anxiety(STAD, anger(STAXD, depressive mood(BDD were evaluated before and after intervention and 6 weeks later after study completed. And various and subjective responses of Music-listening self intervention for Hwa-byung patients were collected by semi- structured interview made for this study. Results: Their Somatic symptoms(especially insomnia), self-awareness of Hwa-byung and depressive mood were improved except anxiety, anger. This improvement had maintained over a 6-week follow-up period. Patients had used constantly the music-listening program for Hwa-byung patients after the study completed. Conclusion: The music-listening program will be an effective for Hwa-byung patient's somatic symptoms and depressive mood and had been used constantly by them. But, much methodological supplementation will be needed to assess clinical effects on this program.
The present study was performed to investigate the sedative effects of the combined administration of phenolic compounds. 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, a component of Gastrodia elnta, showing positive GABAergic neuromodulation was administered intraperitoneally together with an identical dose of 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, a potent antioxidant, to the rats and then evaluated for its effects on the convulsion, the hypnosis, the inxiety and the muscle relaxation. Combined administration of both compounds significantly reduced the pentyleneterazole-induced lethality. In addition, this mixture significantly enhanced the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time. Contrary to the anticonvulsive and sedative effects, the combined administration did not exhibit anxiolytic or muscle relaxant activities. These results indicated that the combined treatment of 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehtyde and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde with different effects leads to the anticonvulsion and/or sedation

The crude methanolic extract of the bark of Cerbera odollam Gaertn. was evaluated for its possible antinociceptive and neuropharmacological activities in animal models. At the dose of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, the extract showed a significant antinociceptive effect in acetic acid induced writhing in mice comparable to that produced by aspirin, used as standard drug (P<0.001). The extract significantly reduced the time of onset of sleep (P<0.01) and potentiated the pentobarbital induced sleeping time in mice at the dose of 400 mg/kg of body weight significantly (P<0.001). It also decreased the open field score in open field test significantly at the dose of 400 mg/kg of body weight (P < 0.05). The obtained results tend to suggest the probable antinociceptive and neuropharmacological activities of the crude extract.
The plant is used in India as well as several countries since several centuries for treating different types of ailments. The plant is an important constituent of the Ayurvedic Materia Medica and finds mention in several ancient texts including Caraka Sanhita ($6^{th}$ century A.D.) and the Bhavprakasa ($16^{th}$ century A.D.). The scientific studies on this plant have reported several activities of this plant. Though the plant has cardiotonic, vasoconstrictor, sedative, neuro-muscular blocking, and anticancer activities, it is more popular as memory enhancer. Traditionally, a poultice made of the boiled plant is placed on the chest in acute bronchitis and coughs of children. The plant contains saponins: bacosides A and B, hersaponin, sapogenins: bacogenin $A_{1}$, $A_{2}$, and $A_{3}$ stigmasterol, and flavonoids: luteolin and luteolin-7 glucoside, nicotine, brahmine, and herpestine. This review focuses on the scientific data published since 1931.

The psycho-pharmacological effect of BRHAT VATACHINTAMANI RASA (BVC) an Ayurvedic preparation was investigated, both in animal and clinical models. It was observed that BVC possess a sedative or quitening effect in that it significantly decreased the spontaneous motor activity, and also lowered the exploratory behavior of the amphetamine treated animals. This was further evident by increase in climbing out time and taming effect on animal in isolation induced aggression test. Apart from very high dose it seems have little effect on pentobarbital sleeping time and narcotic analgesic test. The drug BVC increases performance of the animal in forced locomotor test. The effect of VATACHINTAMANI RASA on clinical study was not significant.
In order to investigate experimentally the clinical effects of Taeuminkalkunhaeki-tang (太陰人葛根解肌湯) that was prescribed to cure the Kansuyolriyolbyong (肝受熱裏熱病) of Taeumin, the author experimented various activities of mixed extract from Taeuminkalkunhaeki-tang by the methods prescribed in the experimental part. The results of the studies were summarized as follows: 1. Sedative effects such as malfunction of the spontaneous motor activity in the wheel cage method experiment and muscle relaxation in the rotor rod method experiment were noted. 2. In mice, the prolongation of the duration of hypnosis Induced by thiopental-Na was noted. 3. In the acetic acid method experiment and the pressing hind paw method experiment, analgesic effects were noted. 4. Inhibitory effects were noted on the convulsions incuced by strychine and picrotoxin. 5. The expansion of blood vessels by relaxation of smooth muscle was noted. According to the above results, effects based on oriental medical references approximate to the actual experimental results.
These studies were conducted about the effects of Ferric oxide in the aspect of the basic pharmacology through experimental animals with the investigation of its clinical effects on oriental medical literatures of Ferric oxide. The results were as follows: 1. The analgenic effects induced by acetic acid were significant. 2. The anticonvulsive effects induced by ECT unit were significant. 3. The sedative effects in Rotor rod method were significant. 4. The number of platelets was increased but not significantly. 5. Prothrombin time was decreased significantly. 6. Fibrinogen was increased but not significantly. 7. The degree of concentration of FDP was decreased significantly. According to the above results, it is considered that Ferric oxide retains effectiveness on the treatment of cerebral stroke.
Polygalae Radix (PR) from Polygala tenuifolia. (Polygalaceae) is traditionally used in China and Korea, since this herb has a sedative, antiinflammatory, and antibacterial agent. To extend pharmacological actions of PR in the CNS on the basis of its CNS inhibitory effect, the present study examined whether PR has the neuroprotective action against kainic acid (KA) -induced cell death in primarily cultured rat cerebellar granule neurons. PR, over a concentration range of 0.05 to $5{\mu}g/ml$ inhibited KA $(500\;{\mu}M)$-induced neuronal cell death, which was measured by a trypan blue exclusion test and a 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-y1]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. PR $(0.5{\mu}g/ml)$ inhibited glutamate release into medium induced by KA $(500\;{\mu}M)$, which was measured by HPLC. Pretreatment of PR $(0.5{\mu}g/ml)$ inhibited KA $(500\;{\mu}M)$-induced elevation of cytosolic calcium concentration $([Ca^{2+}]_c)$ which was measured by a fluorescent dye, Fura 2-AM, and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These results suggest that PR prevents KA-induced neuronal cell damage in vitro.
