Mechanisms of herbicide resistance in weeds

  • In major field crops, synthetic herbicides have been used to control weeds worldwide. Globally, herbicide resistance in weeds should be minimized because it is a major limiting factor for food security. Cross resistance can occur with herbicides within the same or in different herbicide families and with the same or different sites of action. Multiple resistance refers to evolved mechanisms of resistance to more than one herbicide (e.g., resistance to both ALS-inhibitors and ACCase-inhibitors) and this resistance was brought about by separate selection processes. Target site resistance could occur from changes at the biochemical site of action of one herbicide. Non target site resistance occurs through mechanisms which reduce the number of herbicide molecules that reach the herbicide target site. There are currently 480 unique cases (species ${\times}$ site of action) of herbicide resistance globally in 252 plant species (145 dicots and 105 monocots). To date, resistance in weeds has been reported to 161 different herbicides, involving 23 of the 26 known herbicide sites of action. Finally, it can be concluded that we can protect crops associated to herbicide resistant weeds by applications of biochemical, genetic and crop control strategies.

  • The increase in user data stored in the device implies the increase in threats of users' sensitive data. Currently, smartphone authentication mechanisms such as Pattern Lock, fingerprint recognition are widely used. Although, there exist disadvantages of inconvenience use and dependence that users need to depend on their own memory. User behavior based authentication mechanism have advantages of high convenience by offering continuous authentication when using the mobile device. However, these mechanisms show limitations on low accuracy of authentication and there are researches to improve the accuracy. This paper proposes improved authentication mechanism that uses user's smartphone application usage pattern which has not considered on earlier studies. Also, we analyze performance of proposed mechanism with collected datasets from actual use of smartphone applications.

  • Security is crucial for the successful deployment of large distributed systems. Many of these systems provide services to people across different administrative domains. The traditional identity-based access control mechanisms are un scalable and difficult to manage. Unlike the closed systems, open systems provide services to people from different security domains. Healthcare systems need to be highly available in order for the patients to get a timely treatment. The health care information should be available to authorized users both inside the administrative domain and outside the domain, such as pharmacies and insurance companies. In this paper, we first analyzed the necessities and advantages of importing attribute-based trust-management models into open distributed systems. Then we reviewed traditional access-control models and presented the basic elements of the new trust-management model.

  • A VPN(Virtual Private Network) is constructed using public wires to connect nodes. It can be used like the dedicated line and maintain the security of the data on the VPN. And It uses encryption and other security mechanisms to ensure that only authorized users can access the network. In this paper we summarize IPsec and VPN technology and construct pilot VPN system for analyzing the performance of remote access VPN. Then we analyze the performance of remote VPN system using VPN concentrator in case of single user and in case of multi users.

  • As the number of internet-connected appliances and the variety of IoT services are rapidly increasing, it is hard to protect IT assets with traditional network security techniques. Most traditional network log analysis systems use rule based mechanisms to reduce the raw logs. But using predefined rules can't detect new attack patterns. So, there is a need for a mechanism to reduce congested raw logs and detect new attack patterns. This paper suggests enterprise security management for IoT services using graph and network measures. We model an event network based on a graph of interconnected logs between network devices and IoT gateways. And we suggest a network clustering algorithm that estimates the attack probability of log clusters and detects new attack patterns.

  • At the present, Short Messaging Transfer Protocol Standard described under TIA/EIA/IS-637-A does not cover the measures for security at all. Sequentially, in case of necessity, it seems to be a better idea that security functions are made up for current short messaging transfer protocol. This paper proposes security mechanisms including algorithms and protocols for Short Messaging Services(SMS) which present not only high levels of confidentiality and integrity but also appropriate level of authentication.

  • Due to the fundamental features of smartphones, such as openness and mobility, a great deal of malicious software including spyware can be installed more easily. Since spyware can steal user's sensitive information and invade privacy, it is necessary to provide proper security mechanisms like secure virtual keyboards. In this paper, we propose a novel password input system to resist spyware and show how effectively it can reduce the threats.

Efficient and Secure Group Key Generation Protocol for Small and Medium Business

  • Group communication is becoming increasingly popular in Internet applications such as videoconferences, online chatting programs, games, and gambling. For secure communications, the integrity of messages, member authentication, and confidentiality must be provided among group members. To maintain message integrity, all group members use the Group Key (GK) for encrypting and decrypting messages while providing enough security to protect against passive attacks. Tree-based Group Diffie-Hellman (TGDH) is an efficient group key agreement protocol to generate the GK. TGDH assumes all members have an equal computing power. One of the characteristics of distributed computing and grid environments is heterogeneity; the member can be at a workstation, a laptop or even a mobile computer. Member reordering in the TDGH protocol could potentially lead to an improved protocol; such reordering should capture the heterogeneity of the network as well as latency. This research investigates dynamic reordering mechanisms to consider not only the overhead involved but also the scalability of the proposed protocol.

  • As RFID technology is becoming ubiquitous, the secunty of these systems gets much attention. Its fields of usage include personal identification, supply-chain management systems, and many more. Many kinds of RFID tags are available on the market which differ both in storage, and computational capacity. Since by standard IT means all the tags have small capacities, the security mechanisms which are in use in computer networks are not suitable. For expensive tags with relatively large computational capacities many secure communication protocols were developed, for cheap low-end tags, only a few lightweight protocols exist. In this paper we introduce our solution, which is based on the least computation demanding operator, the exclusive or function. By introducing two tags instead of one in the RFID system, our scheme provides security solutions which are comparable with those provided by the lightweight protocols. In the meantime, our scheme does not demand any computational steps to be made by the ta.

  • 본 논문은 모바일 운영체제의 보안 매커니즘을 조사하고, 현재까지 알려진 공격 경로뿐만 아니라 새로운 공격 경로를 탐지하기 위한 방법에 대해 연구하였다. 모바일 운영체제 보안은 사용자의 개인 정보와 중요한 데이터를 보호하는 데 매우 중요하며, 이에 대한 이해와 공격 경로의 탐지는 보안 강화에 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 iOS와 Android를 중심으로 모바일 운영체제의 주요 보안 매커니즘을 분석하고, 샌드박스 환경, 권한 관리, 암호화 등의 보안 매커니즘에 대해 상세히 살펴보았다. 또한, 이전 연구들에서 파악된 공격 경로 외에도 새로운 공격 경로를 발견하고 탐지하기 위한 방법과 도구를 개발하였다.
