  • Top-down method is widely used for urban area construction for its advantages in reducing environmental problems such as dust and noise, and saving construction cost depending on given conditions of a construction site. Because the excavation and construction of super- and sub-structures of the building have to be proceeded simultaneously, a column has to be embedded prior to excavation. This column is called a pillar column or pre-founded column. Usually a wide flange section is used for these columns. To place the columns, usually the diameter of casing holes needs to be larger than the section of the wide flange itself in order to accommodate a couple of tremie pipes for pouring concrete. In this paper, a newly developed method of using circular pipe as an alternative to the existing wide flange section is discussed. The crucial part of the new method is to develop a connection between the circular column and concrete flat slabs. For shear force transfer from concrete slab to the concrete filled tube (CFT) column, shear jackets with studs and shear bands are proposed. The studs are welded on the jackets at shop and placed around the circular column on site. The shear bands are welded on the outer side of the CFT at shop and inserted into ground with the CFT. Test results and application of the method to a construction site are also provided in this paper.

  • For minimizing the effect on the focus of civil traffic and environment conditions related to the excavation at the traffic jamming points, an underground station tunnel was planned with 35.5 m in length and bigger area than $200\;m^2$ in sedimentary rock mass. It faced the case that the overburden was just under 13 m. Not based on a pattern design but on the case histories of similar projects and arching effect, the design of large section tunnel under shallow overburden was investigated on three design subjects which are shape effect on the section area, application method of support pressure, and supporting and tunnel safety. According to the mechanical effect from section shape, a basic design and a preliminary design was obtained, and then supporting method of large section was planned by the supporting of NATM and a pipe roof method for subsidence prevention and mechanical stability. From the comparative study between both designs, it was found that the basic design was suitable and acceptable for the steel alignment of tunnel lining, safety and the design parameter restricted by the limit considered as partition of the excavation facilities. Through the analysis result of preliminary design showing the mechanical stability without stress concentration in tunnel arch level, it also was induced that shape effect of the large section area and yielding load obtained from deformation zone in the surrounding rock mass of tunnel have to be considered as major topics for the further development of design technique on the large section tunnel.

  • ILM(incremental launching method) is a way of construction, installing a girder producing spot behind the abutment, making the bridge girder infilled with concrete continuously and launching with using by jack. The superstructure of the bridge constructed by this method is temporarily located on the center of the span and the supporting points under construction. Therefore, the sections are structurally undergone maximum positive moment, maximum negative moment, and maximum shear force arising from self weight. On the other hand, launching nose is attached to the front of the girder to decrease the cantilever effect. The magnitude of this temporary stress creating on the upper section is dependent upon the launching nose's characteristics. This study has proposed an analysis formula simplified on the assumption that the launching nose section is a quasi-equivalent section(rigid; equivalent section, weight; tapered section) in order to ensure the accuracy of the analysis formula and improve its usage with reference to the interaction between the launching nose and the upper section; and a prismatic analysis formula modified by displacing a diaphragm's weight by a concentrated load in order to improve the accuracy of the existing analysis formula that assumes the launching nose section as the equivalent section. To judge the accuracy and usage of two analysis formulas proposed, we have compared and analyzed computational structural analysis programs and existing analysis formulas based on actual ILM bridge data. As a result, all of two reveal the superior accuracy and also their usage has been improved by the simplification of analysis formulas.

  • This paper proposes a speech recognition based on HMM(Hidden Markov Model) using FSVQ(First Section Vector Quantization) and fuzzy concept. In the proposed paper, we generate codebook of First Section, and then obtain multi-observation sequences by order of large propabilistic values based on fuzzy rule from the codebook of the first section. Thereafter, this observation sequences of first section from codebooks is trained and in case of recognition, a word that has the most highest probability of first section is selected as a recognized word by same concept. Train station names are selected as the target recognition vocabulary and LPC cepstrum coefficients are used as the feature parameters. Besides the speech recognition experiments of proposed method, we experiment the other methods under same conditions and data. Through the experiment results, it is proved that the proposed method based on HMM using FSVQ and fuzzy concept is superior to tile others in recognition rate.

  • The ultimate carrying capacity of axially loaded welded square box section members made of medium and high strength steels (nominal yield stresses varying from 345 MPa to 460 MPa), with large width-to-thickness ratios ranging from 35 to 70, is analyzed by finite element method (FEM). At the same time, the numerical results are compared with the predicted results using Direct Strength Method (DSM), modified DSM and Effective Yield Strength Method (EYSM). It shows that curve a, rather than curve b recommended in Code for design of steel structures GB50017-2003, should be used to check the local-overall interaction buckling strength of welded square section columns fabricated from medium and high strength steels when using DSM, modified DSM and EYSM. Despite all this, EYSM is conservative. Compared to EYSM and modified DSM, DSM provides a better prediction of the ultimate capacities of welded square box compression members with large width-thickness ratios over a wide range of width-thickness ratios, slenderness ratios and steel grades. However, for high strength steels (nominal yield strength greater than 460 MPa), the numerical and existent experimental results indicate that DSM overestimates the load-carrying capacities of the columns with width-thickness ratio smaller than 45 and slenderness ratio less than 80. Further, for the purpose of making it suitable for a wider scope, DSM has been modified (called proposed modified DSM). The proposed modified DSM is in excellent agreement with the numerical and existing experimental results.

  • It is very important that there are saving resource and energy in the future as well as in these day. Weight saving of structural parts, which are formed by extrusion, plays a key role in manufacturing field. Extruded aluminum parts' cross sections are constant in the axial direction by conventional extrusion method. Especially these aluminum parts used in the car need other processes to vary the cross section in the axial direction. Thus, applications of these parts are limited by high cost. if the cross section of the parts is variable by only extrusion, application of extruded aluminum parts will more increase. Therefore, a new CNC extruder which can control the section area of a car part was invented the nation's first. Using the extrusion machine, the experiment was performed to validate the workability.

  • Previous study showed that delamination region in concrete structures can be successfully visualized using mode shapes of delaminated concrete section. However, modal tests for this purpose to obtain mode shapes of the delaminated concrete section may not be applicable in practice since, to correctly obtain the mode shapes of the section, the location and the shape of the delamination region in a structure should be known in advance. Unfortunately those are normally unknown in a real structure. Therefore, a moving forward test method may be useful to obtain the mode shapes of the concrete section when the location and the shape of the delamination region are not known. In this study, impact-echo testing based mode shape estimation technique is proposed and experimentally validated for visualization of delamination region.

  • This paper presents the optimization design technique on the joint stiffness and section characteristic factors of chassis frame, by using beam and spring elements in a given design package. Two correction methods are used for the optimization design of chassis frame. First is the equivalent inertia of moment method in relation to the section characteristic factors of joint zones, which are thickness , width and height of frame channel section. Second is the rotational spring element with joint stiffness of joint zones. The CAE example shows that the relationship of section characteristic factors and joint stiffness can effectively be used in designing chassis frame. In this point, if static and dynamic targets are given, the joint-zone and section characteristic factors of chassis frame intended may be designed and defined by using beam and rotational spring elements.
