  • In recent years, the demands of multimedia data in wireless sensor networks have been significantly increased for the high-quality environment monitoring applications that utilize sensor nodes. However, since the amount of multimedia data is very large, the network lifetime is significantly reduced due to excessive energy consumption on particular nodes. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose a high efficiency data compression scheme in wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed scheme reduces the packet size by a multiple compression technique that consists of primary compression that deletes the lower priority bits considering characteristics of multimedia data and secondary compression based on Chinese Remainder Theorem. To show the superiority of our scheme, we compare it with the existing compression scheme. Our experimental results show that our proposed scheme reduces the amount of transmitted data by about 55% and increases network lifetime by about 16% over the existing scheme on average.

  • Wing and secondary cracks are unique types of cracks observed in rock masses subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compressive loading conditions. In this study, morphological features of wing and secondary cracks developed in gypsum specimens are investigated in the macro and micro scales. Along the path of wing crack, microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks coalesce with pores and show branch phenomenon. From the onset of the wing crack, multiple initiations of microtensile cracks are observed. Microtensile cracks show tortuous propagation paths and relatively constant aperture of the cracks during the propagation. It is shown that microtensile cracks propagate by splitting failure. At the micro scale, microfsults are observed in the path of the secondary cracks. Along the path of the secondary cracks, separation of grains and conglomerate grains, oblique microfaults, and irregular aperture of microfault are observed. These features show that the secondary cracks are produced in shear mode. The measured sizes of fracture process zone across the propagation direction near the tip of wing and secondary cracks range from 10$\mu{m}$ to 20$\mu{m}$ far wing cracks and from 100$\mu{m}$ to 200$\mu{m}$ for secondary cracks, respectively.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, vertical drain method combined with a preloading technique has been widely applied. In this paper, a theory of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation fer drainage-installed deposit, which considers secondary compression (or creep) during primary consolidation, as well as the variations of compressibility and permeability during the consolidation process, has been developed. A computer program named AXICON based on Hypothesis B fur the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation was developed by adopting finite difference method. The results of AS(ICON were compared with Hansbo's solution based on Hypothesis A, as well as in-situ settlements and pore pressures measured in test embankment of Ska-Edeby. The results indicated that Hypothesis A usually underestimated the in-situ settlement and Hypothesis B was considered to be logically correct. It was also shown that one may able to appropriately predict the real in-situ behaviors using the proposed program.

  • A Series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the engineering characteristics for organic soil widely distributed in Yong-dong region which always makes problems in construction works. Physical characteristics of Yong-dong organic soil area were measured in terms of such categories as nature water content, organic content, specific gravity, liquid limit, and plasticity index. As a result, it was found that nature water content was $50.8^{\circ}-343.5%$, organic content 12.1-42.5%, specific gravity 1.76-2.71, liquid limit 46.6-440.2%, and plasticity index 9.2-557.2%. Also, as consolidation load increases, consolidation coefficient slightly decreases with small up and down. The ratio of secondary consolidation coefficient to compression index is 0.001-0.091 $C_a/C_c$, secondary coefficient tends to increase greatly when organic content is in the range of 11-22%.

  • In this paper, an analysis on performance and exergy of R404A refrigeration system using R744 secondary refrigerant was performed numerically to optimize the design for the operating parameters. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree, internal heat exchanger and compression efficiency, evaporation and condensation temperature in the R404A refrigeration cycle and temperature difference of cascade heat exchanger. The main results are summarized as follows : The COP(coefficient of performance) of R404A refrigeration system increases with increasing evaporation temperature. The evaporation capacity of R744 as secondary refrigerant increases with the increase in evaporation pressure of R744 secondary refrigeration. And the enthalpy in the evaporator outlet of R744 increases with the increasing evaporation pressure of R744 secondary refrigeration. Therefore, it is important to analysis for the relationship between COP of R404A refrigeration system and refrigeration capacity of R744. As cascade evaporation temperature increase, the exergy loss of condenser and compressor using R404A is the largest among all components. Therefore, the exergy loss in the condenser and compressor using R404A must be decreased to enhance the COP of R404A refrigeration system with R744 secondary refrigerant.

  • This study sets it's face to define effects of the various loading periods in normal consolidation area on clay's compression and long-term consolidation characteristics through a laboratory test using homogeneous remolded clay. Moreover, by carrying out a long-term consolidation test which diversifies initial consolidation applicable to effective overburden loading in the various loading period. This study intended to suggest the method predicting the final settlement on the basis of loading periods by comparing and analyzing compression curve's characteristics according to loading weight of each stage and increase in loading period when carrying out the standard consolidation test. From the test results, the study shows that as of the soft clay's compression characteristics on the basis of various loading periods, preconsolidation load has a tendency to be decreased slightly as the loading period is getting more and more longer at each step after initial consolidation load puts on the remolded clay which is caused by secondary consolidation's increase in the latter part of each phase. And those effects have an weaker influence on compression index in normal consolidation area at the same time as secondary consolidation brought out quasi-overconsolidation and stabilization of clay's structure, have an influence re-compression index is increased in overconsolidation area on the other hand.

  • In this paper, a study on the dynamic behavior and lubrication characteristics of a reciprocating compression mechanism used in small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the compressor dynamics, the viscous frictional force between piston and cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of piston and crankshaft. The solutions of the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism along with the time dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between piston and cylinder wall and oil films of the journal bearings are obtained simultaneously. The hydrodynamic forces of journal bearings are calculated using finite bearing model and Gumbel boundary condition. And, a Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the nonlinear equations of piston and crankshaft. The results explored the effects of design parameters on the stability and lubrication characteristics of the compression mechanism.

  • The purpose of this article was to provide basic knowledge and treatment principles of patient with lymphedema, which was usually not treated at all, or the treatment given didn't work efficiently. Lmphedema is defined as an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid, edema, and chronic inflammation within an extremity. Lmphedema may be classified as either primary results from defects with aplasia, hypoplasia, and hyperplasia in the lymphatic system at birth or secondary is caused by known precipitating factors such as cancer, infection, inflammation, radiation, surgery, or trauma etc. There are essentially several conservative treatment methods which has been utilized successfully to treat lymphedema in Samsung Medical Center. We used following procedures: CPT (Complex Physical therapy) or CDP (Complex Decongesitive Physical therapy) such as skin care, MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage), compression with short-stretch bandage, exercise, elevation, elastic stocking, and pneumatic compression. Our experiences shows that conservative treatments can significantly reduce lymphedema and prevent different complications.

  • In this paper, the power transmitting mechanism for negative torque of the metal V-belt (MVB) CVT were investigated by theoretically analyzing variation of band tension, block compression forces for each of the primary and secondary pulleys. An experimental study was performed to investigate the speed ratio - thrust characteristics for negative torque. The experimental results are in good acoordance with the theoretical results. CVT line pressure control logic was suggested for negative torque based the speed radio - negative torque - thrust characteristics and the thrust ratio curves. The results of this study can be used as basic design materials for developing the CVT control system for negative torque.

  • Pseudoaneurysm of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) has been reported as a rare complication of RVOT reconstruction performed using conduit replacement or patch repair. Rarely, it may present alongside symptoms secondary to the compression of adjoining mediastinal structures. We report the case of a patient who developed a symptomatic RVOT pseudoaneurysm one month after a total correction of tetralogy of Fallot. In the present case, superior vena cava syndrome was caused by compression of the superior vena cava, which was a very unusual presentation.
