This study concentrates on the second-order diffraction problem around circular cylinders in multi-frequency waves. The method of solution is a time-domain Rankine panel method which adopts a higher-order approximation for the velocity potential and wave elevation. In the present study, the multiple second-order quadratic transfer functions are extracted from the second-order time signal generated in random waves, and the comparison with other bench-mark test results shows a good agreement. This approach is directly applicable to prediction of nonlinear forces on offshore structures in random ocean.

In this paper, we intend to introduce a nonlinear finite element method based on the fully nonlinear potential flow theory in order to simulate the large amplitude sloshing flow in two-dimensional baffled tank subject to horizontally forced excitation. The free surface is tracked by a direct time differentiation scheme with the four-step predictor-corrector time integration method. The flow velocity is accurately recovered from the velocity potential by second-order least square method. In order to maintain the finite element mesh regularity and total mass, the semi-Lagrangian surface tracking method with area conservation is applied. According to the numerical formulae, we perform the parametric experiments by varying the installation height and the opening width of baffles, in order to examine the effects of baffle on the nonlinear liquid sloshing. From the numerical results, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the large amplitude sloshing are investigated.
The moment-of-fluid (MOF) method is a new volume-tracking method that accurately treats evolving material interfaces. Based on the moment data (volume and centroid) for each material, the material interfaces are reconstructed with second-order spatial accuracy in a strictly conservative manner. The MOF method is coupled with a stabilized finite element incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for two fluids, namely water and air. The effectiveness of the MOF method is demonstrated with a free-surface dam-break problem.
In order to simulate a free surface flow in a trench channel, a three-dimensional incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed with the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. The artificial compressibility (AC) method is used. Because the pressure fields can be coupled directly with the velocity fields, the incompressible Navier-Stokes (INS) equations can be solved for the unknown variables such as velocity components and pressure. The governing equations are discretized in a conservation form using a second order accurate finite volume method on non-staggered grids. In order to prevent the oscillatory behavior of computed solutions known as odd-even decoupling, an artificial dissipation using the flux-difference splitting upwind scheme is applied. To enhance the efficiency and robustness of the numerical algorithm, the implicit method of the Beam and Warming method is employed. The treatment of the free surface, so-called interface-tracking method, is proposed using the free surface evolution equation and the kinematic free surface boundary conditions at the free surface instead of the dynamic free surface boundary condition. AC method in this paper can be applied only to the hydrodynamic pressure using the decomposition into hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressure components. In this study, the boundary-fitted grids are used and advanced each time the free surface moved. The accuracy of our RANS solver is compared with the laboratory experimental and numerical data for a fully turbulent shallow-water trench flow. The algorithm yields practically identical velocity profiles that are in good overall agreement with the laboratory experimental measurement for the turbulent flow.
Convergence characteristics and efficiency of three implicit approximate factorization schemes(ADI, DDADI and MAF) are examined using 2-Dimensional compressible upwind Navier-Stokes code. Second-order CSCM(Conservative Supra Characteristic Method) upwind flux difference splitting method with Fromm scheme is used for the right-hand side residual evaluation, while generally first-order upwind differencing is used for the implicit operator on the left-hand side. Convergence studies are performed using an example of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at steady transonic flow condition, i. e. Mach number 0.8 at $1.25^{\circ}$ angle of attack. The results were compared with other computational results in order to validate the current numerical analysis. The results from the implicit AF algorithms were compared well in low surface with the other computational results; however, not well in upper surface. It might be due to lack of the grid around the shock position. Because the algorithm minimizes the errors of the approximate decomposition, the improved convergence rate with MAF were observed.
The present work is concerned with heat and mass transfer of an electrically conducting second grade MHD fluid past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with convective surface heat flux. The analysis accounts for thermophoresis and thermal radiation. A similarity transformations is used to reduce the governing equations into a dimensionless form. The local similarity equations are derived and solved using Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth order integration scheme. Results for various flow characteristics are presented through graphs and tables delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. Our analysis explores that the rate of heat transfer enhances with increasing the values of the surface convection parameter. Also the fluid velocity and temperature in the boundary layer region rise significantly for increasing the values of thermal radiation parameter.
In the present numerical simulation of viscous free surface flow around a ship, two-fluids in-compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the standard $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$turbulence model are discretized on a regular grid by using a finite volume method. A local level-set method is introduced for capturing the free surface movement and the influence of the viscous layer and dynamic boundary condition of the free surface are implicitly considered. Partial differential equations in the level-set method are discretized with second order ENO scheme and explicit Euler scheme in the space and time integration, respectively. The computational results for the Series-60 model with $C_B=0.6$ show a good agreement with the experimental data, but more validation studies for commercial complicated hull forms are necessary.
In this study, the breakup characteristics of mono disperse droplets were studied with various fuels, ethanol, diesel fuel, biodiesel fuel extracted from soybean oil, and pure water. In order to investigate the droplet behavior in air cross-flow conditions, the experimental equipment was composed of a droplet generator with an air nozzle, and a high-magnification photo detecting system. Droplets produced by the droplet generator were injected into the air stream flowing normal to a direction of liquid drop jet. Digital images of the droplet behavior in air flow field were recorded by controlling the air flow rate. From the inspections, droplet breakup mechanism is primarily classified into the two kinds of stage, first breakup stage and second breakup stage. At the first breakup stage, droplet deformation rate seems to be affected by the force induced by the surface tension and the viscosity. On the other hand, at the second breakup stage, droplet is broken up mainly induced by the surface tension, so the breakup transition can be divided by the regular Weber number.

A wind tunnel experiment for the flow around a 1/5 scale passenger vehicle model has been carried out. A 5-hole Pitot tube is used for measuring velocity distributions around the model and a scanivalve with 48 ports is used for measuring surface pressure distribution at various Reynolds numbers. In order to observe the flow on the surface and in the wake region, a flow visualization experiment has been performed using wool tuft with and without paper cones. In addition, a 2-dimensional viscous calculation considering only the mid-plane section of the model has been performed. A complex wake structure in the immediate rear of the model has been confirmed. The distributions of the surface pressure coefficient are not sensitively dependent on the Reynolds Number. In the first half of the model, they do not seem to vary form section to section. However, in the second half, they do vary from section to section, especially at the bottom surface, which indicates that the cross flow vortex is more affected by the bottom surface than the top surface. The qualitative agreement of the measured and calculated velocity field also explains the usefulness of the 2-dimensional calculation in the limited sense.
The experimental design methodology was applied in the drop tube furnace (DTF) to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was set with the numerical simulation of DTF. The dependent variables such as burnout ratios (BOR) of coal and $CO/CO_2$ ratios were mathematically described as a function of three independent variables (coal particle size, carrier gas flow rate, wall temperature) being modeled by the use of the central composite design (CCD), and evaluated using a second-order polynomial multiple regression model. The prediction of BOR showed a high coefficient of determination (R2) value, thus ensuring a satisfactory adjustment of the second-order polynomial multiple regression model with the simulation data. However, $CO/CO_2$ ratio had a big difference between calculated values and predicted values using conventional RSM, which might be mainly due to the dependent variable increses or decrease very steeply, and hence the second order polynomial cannot follow the rates. To relax the increasing rate of dependent variable, $CO/CO_2$ ratio was taken as common logarithms and worked again with RSM. The application of logarithms in the transformation of dependent variables showed that the accuracy was highly enhanced and predicted the simulation data well.
