Numerical Analysis has been done for the supersonic off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference between the jet and the ambient fluid. The difference of pressure generates an oblique shock or an expansion wave at the nozzle exit, The waves reflect repeatedly at the center axis and on the sonic surface in the shear layer, and the pressure difference is resolved across these waves interacted with the turbulence mixing layer. In this paper, the axi-symmetric Navier-Stokes equation has been used with two equation $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence closure model. The second order TVD scheme with flux limiters, based on the flux vector split by the smooth eigenvalue split, has been used to capture internal shocks and other discontinuities. The correction term for the compressible flow and the damping function are used in the turbulence model. Numerical calculations have been done to analyze the off-design jet flow due to the pressure difference. The variation of pressure along the flow axis is compared with an experimental result and other numerical result. The characteristics of the interaction between the shock cell and the turbulence mixing layer have been analyzed.

The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.

The paper presents a numerical simulation of flow of a turbulent boundary layer, representing a typical wind environment and matching a series of wind tunnel observations. The simulations are carried out at a Reynolds number of 20,000, based on the velocity U at a pseudo-height h, and large enough that the flow be effectively Reynolds number independent. Some wall models are proposed for the LES(Large Eddy Simulation) of the turbulent boundary layer over a rough surface. The Jenson number, $J=h/z_0$, based on the roughness length $z_0$, is 600 to match the wind tunnel data. The computational mesh is uniform with a spacing of h/32, as this aids rapid convergence of the multigrid solver, and the governing equations are discretised using second order finite differences within a parallel multiblock environment. The results presented include the comparison between wind tunnel measurements and LES computations of the turbulent boundary layer over rough surface.
This article presents a unified analytical solution for the analysis of thermal deformations and stresses in elastic annular disks with arbitrary cross-sections of continuously variable thickness. The annular disk is assumed to be under steady heat flow conditions, in which the inner surface of the annular disk is at an initial temperature and the outer surface at zero temperature. The governing second-order differential equation is derived from the basic equations of the thermal annular disks and solved with the aid of some hypergeometric functions. Numerical results for thermal stresses and displacement are given for various annular disks. These disks include annular disks of thickness profiles in the form of general parabolic and exponential functions. Additional annular disks with nonlinearly variable thickness and uniform thickness are also included.
The dissolution of ionized gas in dielectric barrier plasma, similar to the principle of ozone generation, is a major performance-affecting factor. In this study, the plasma gas dissolving performance of a gas mixing-circulation plasma process was evaluated using an experimental design methodology. The plasma reaction is a function of four parameters [electric current (X1), gas flow rate (X2), liquid flow rate (X3) and reaction time (X4)] modeled by the Box-Behnken design. RNO (N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline), an indictor of OH radical formation, was evaluated using a quadratic response surface model. The model prediction equation derived for RNO degradation was shown as a second-order polynomial. By pooling the terms with poor explanatory power as error terms and performing ANOVA, results showed high significance, with an adjusted R2 value of 0.9386; this indicate that the model adequately satisfies the polynomial fit. For the RNO degradation, the measured value and the predicted values by the model equation agreed relatively well. The optimum current, gas flow rate, liquid flow rate and reaction time were obtained for the highest desirability for RNO degradation at 0.21 A, 2.65 L/min, 0.75 L/min and 6.5 min, respectively.

This paper presents the theoretical analysis of a flow driven by surface tension and gravity in an inclined circular tube. A governing equation is developed for describing the displacement of a non-Newtonian fluid(Power-law model) that continuously flows into a circular tube owing to surface tension, which represents a second-order, nonlinear, non-homogeneous, and ordinary differential form. It was found that quantitatively, the theoretical predictions of the governing equation were in excellent agreement with the solutions of the equation for horizontal tubes and the past experimental data. In addition, the predictions compared very well with the results of the force balance equation for steady.

Modeling water flow in variably saturated, porous media is important in many branches of science and engineering. Highly nonlinear relationships between water content and hydraulic conductivity and soil-water pressure result in very steep wetting fronts causing numerical problems. These include poor efficiency when modeling water infiltration into very dry porous media, and numerical oscillation near a steep wetting front. A one-dimensional finite element formulation is developed for the numerical simulation of variably saturated flow systems. First order backward Euler implicit and second order Crank-Nicolson time discretization schemes are adopted as a solution strategy in this formulation based on Picard and Newton iterative techniques. Five examples are used to investigate the numerical performance of two approaches and the different factors are highlighted that can affect their convergence and efficiency. The first test case deals with sharp moisture front that infiltrates into the soil column. It shows the capability of providing a mass-conservative behavior. Saturated conditions are not developed in the second test case. Involving of dry initial condition and steep wetting front are the main numerical complexity of the third test example. Fourth test case is a rapid infiltration of water from the surface, followed by a period of redistribution of the water due to the dynamic boundary condition. The last one-dimensional test case involves flow into a layered soil with variable initial conditions. The numerical results indicate that the Crank-Nicolson scheme is inefficient compared to fully implicit backward Euler scheme for the layered soil problem but offers same accuracy for the other homogeneous soil cases.
The thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the hypersonic flow over blunt cone configurations with applications to laminar as well as turbulent flows. The equations are expressed in the forms of flux-vector splitting and explicit algorithm. The upwind schemes of Steger-Warming and van Leer are investigated in their ability to accurately predict the heating loads along the surface of the body. A comparison with the second order extensions of these schemes is made and a hybrid scheme incorporating a combination of central differencing and flux-vector-splitting is presented. This scheme is also investigated in its ability to accurately predict heat transfer distributions.
A physically based model for rainfall-runoff simulation in agricultural watersheds equipped with tile drains is developed from the TOPMODEL framework. The model is based on detailed topographical information provided by the Digital Elevation Model (DEM), which is available in the Geographic Information System GRASS. Nine possible flow generation scenarions are suggested and used in the development of the model. The storage and delaying effects in the soil matrix and in the tile system are simulated with a second order linear reservoir. The model can identify the portions of the hydrators resulting from tile flow, subsurface flow and surface runoff.

The gas pressure acting on the rings in internal combustion engine influences the friction and wear characteristics. Inter-ring pressure variation during engine operation results from cylinder gas flow through a piston-ring pack. The flow passages consist of ring end gaps and clearances between the ring and the piston groove. The gas flow in the clearance between the ring and the groove is directly affected by the axial motion of the ring in the groove. In this paper the asperity contact force is newly considered in the prediction of the clearence between the ring and the groove surface. This term must be taken into account physically in case that the clearance get narrow rather than asperity height between the ring and the groove surface. Finally, comparisons of calculated inter-ring gas pressures based on the analytical method are made with the measured ones. The agereement was found to be good below midium engine speed, 3000rpm. In order to obtain accurate analytical results to the extend of high rpm range, it is recommended to include oil ring motion as well as top and second ring in analytical model.
