  • Physical and acoustic properties of sediment on the southwestern Taean Penisula, the Yellow Sea, were studied using eight piston cores. The sediments in the study area are largely composed of sand which has been deposited with sea-level change after LGM(Last Glacial Maximum). After the sea-level rise, fine-grained sediments discharged from Keum River and neighboring coast area were deposited as muddy sand or sandy mud. Results of these sedimentary environment in this area, the texture of sediments are different from place to place with variable horizontal and vertical distribution of physical and acoustic properties. Correlations among the physical, geoacoustic properties, and mean grain size show slight deviations from those of the South Sea in spite of similar pattern. This is probably due to the differences in sedimentary environment, mineral composition, and measurement system.

  • This study is to contribute to income growth of fishermen by the common octopus fishery characterized in the Tando Bay on the southwest coast of Korea. This area is engaged in Longline fishing (301 persons), Shovel fishing (196 persons), Trap fishing (14 persons) and Torch light fishing (40 persons) in 2008. Population who is joined in the spring becomes main fishery target population of longline fishery in the fall because entering fishing ground in August, and is joined in the fall becomes main fishery target population of longline fishery in the spring because entering fishing ground in December. Average size of common octopus examined by longline 6.26cm, 5.82cm for Shovel fishing, 8.09cm for trap, and expressed big difference by fishery. It needs necessary various kinds of Octopus resource management actions and methods in continuous use. Specially, Fishing force increased by fishing automation system, so the reduction of fishing force is needed to increased by fishing force. Government support and fishermen's self-conscious of resource management is needed.

  • To assess the contamination status of organochlorine pesticides in the marine environment of Saemangeum, surface seawater and sediments were collected and analyzed. Organochlorine pesticides were widely distributed in the Saemangeum environment, with DDT, HCH and endosulfan II contamination being particularly prevalent. The overall concentrations of DDTs, HCHs, and endosulfan II in surface seawater were in the rage of 0.03-0.65ng/l (mean value: 0.36ng/l), 1.31-4.54ng/l (2.63 ng/l), and not detected (ND)-0.96ng/l (0.49ng/l), respectively. Among the target organochlorine pesticides, endosulfan II showed the hi띤est level at the river mouth flowing into the Saemangeum. Additionally, its negative gradient from the rivers to the outside and a good correlation with $NO_3^-$ indicate that endosulfan ll inflows to the Saemangeum through the river; this conclusion is also supported by the elevated levels of endosulfan II in sediments at the river mouth. In sediment, the concentration of DDTs, HCHs, CHLs, and endosulfan II were in the range of 0.05-1.96 ng/g, 0.03-0.31ng/g, 0.01-0.13ng/g, and ND-0.62ng/g, respectively. Levels of contamination in Saemangeum are relatively lower than the median concentrations previously observed at the Korean coastal regions and sediment quality guidelines suggested by NOAA (Long et at. 1995).

  • We investigated seasonal variations of the upper ocean temperature and the mixed layer depth (MLD) in an eddy-permitting global ocean general circulation model (OGCM) to assess the OGCM perfermance. The OGCM is based on the GFDL MOM3 which has a horizontal resolution of 0.5 degree and 30 vertical levels. The OGCM was integrated for 68 years using a monthly-mean climatological wind stress forcing. The model sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity were restored to the Levitus climatology with a time scale of 30 days. Annual-mean model SST shows a cold bias $(<\;-2^{\circ}C)$ in the summer hemisphere and a warm bias $(>\;1^{\circ}C)$ in the winter hemisphere mainly due to the restoring boundary condition of temperature. The model MLD captures well the observed features in most areas, with a slightly deep bias. However, in the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea, the model shows significantly deeper MLD than the climatology-mainly due to weak salinity stratifications in the model. For amplitude of seasonal variation, the model SST is smaller $(1{\sim}3^{\circ}C)$ than the observation largely due to the restoring surface boundary condition while the model MLD has larger seasonal variation $({\sim}50m)$. It is suggested that for more realistic simulation of the upper ocean structure in the present eddy-permitting ocean model, more refinements in the surface boundary condition for the thermohaline forcing and parameterization for vertical mixing are required, together with the incorporation of a sea-ice model.

  • The red seabream iridovirus (RSIV), which belongs to the iridoviridae, causes infectious fish diseases in many Asian countries, leading to considerable economic losses to the aquaculture industry. Using the yeast surface display (YSD) technique, a new experimental system was recently developed for the detection and identification of a variety of marine viruses. In this study, a coat protein gene of RSIV was synthesized based on the nucleotide sequence database and subcloned into the yeast expression vector, pCTCON2. The expression of viral coat proteins in the yeast strain, EBY100, was detected by flow cytometry and Western blot analysis. Finally, they were isolated from the yeast surface through a treatment with ${\beta}$-mercaptoethanol. The data suggests that the YSD system can be a useful method for acquiring coating proteins of marine viruses.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of strong winds accompanying typhoons for a period of 116 years, from 1904 to 2019, when modern weather observations began in Korea. Analysis shows that the average wind speed and high wind rate caused by typhoons were higher over the sea and in the coastal areas than in the inland areas. The average wind speed was higher over the West Sea than over the South Sea, but the rate of strong wind was greater over the South Sea than over the West Sea. The average wind speed decreased by 1980 and recently increased, while the rate of strong winds decreased by 1985 and has subsequently increased. By season, the strong winds in autumn (september and october) were stronger than those in summer (june, july, and august). Strong winds were also more frequent in autumn than in summer. The analysis of the changes in strong winds caused by typhoons since the 1960s shows that the speed of strong winds in august, september, and october has increased more recently than in the past four cycles. In particular, the increase in wind speed was evident in fall (september and october). Analysis of the results suggests that the stronger wind is due to the effects of autumn typhoons, and the increased possibility of strong winds.

  • Species composition and seasonal variation of aquatic organism were collected by pot and trammel net in the coastal waters of Taean in 2018. A total of 4,501 individuals belonging to 78 species were collected in two type of gears. The dominant species in the study area was Strongylocentrotus nudus (Echinodermata). In the pot survey, crustaceans were the most common taxa, with 52 species including Palaemon gravieri, whereas fish were dominant in trammel net with 57 species including Okamejei kenojei. Clustering analysis revealed two distinct groups, indicating that the composition of aquatic organism varies according to oceanographic condition and environmental changes.

  • A Sea breeze front (SBF) appears clear particularly if there is opposing wind, and the convergence zone along a SBF affects air quality in coastal areas. This study analyzes features of SBF separation in the presence of an opposing flow in the southeastern coastal area of Korea Peninsula. Using a Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) numerical simulation and an opposing flow, two types of SBF were observed at Masan coastal area of Korea. In one, the SBF penetrated inland despite of the opposing flow at Jinhae (1100 LST), Wondong (1700 LST), Saenglim (1700 LST), and Miryang (1700 LST). In the other, the SBF remained on the coastline along with Jinhae (1100 LST), Masan (1400 LST), Jinbuk (1400 LST), and Gaecheon (1700 LST), because the inflow of the sea breeze was not sufficient to penetrate inland against the opposing flow. This study shows that SBFs are affected by the formation of an opposing flow, as well as the inflows of a sea breeze and the opposing flow.

  • Sediment from six piston cores from the East Sea (Sea of Japan) was analyzed for evidence of paleoceanographic changes and paleoclimatic variation. A distinct geochemical boundary is evident in major element concentrations and organic carbon content of most cores near the 10-ka horizon. This distinctive basal Holocene change is interpreted to be largely the result of changing sediment sources, an interpretation supported by TiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratios. Organic carbon and carbonate contents also differ significantly between the Holocene and glacial intervals. The C/N ratio of organic matter is greater than 10 during the glacial period, but is less than 10 for the Holocene, suggesting that the influx of terrigenous organic matter was more volumetrically important than marine organic matter during glacial times. The chemical index of weathering (CIW) is higher for the Holocene than the glacial interval, and changes markedly at the basal Holocene geochemical boundary. Silt fractions are higher in the glacial interval, suggesting a strong effect of climate on silt particle transportation: terrigenous aluminosilicates and continental organic carbon transport were higher during glacial times than during the Holocene. Differences in sediment composition between the Holocene and glacial period are interpreted to have been climatically induced.
