  • A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Gageodo Island, Korea from August 1999 to July 2001. Among them, Haliclona (Gellius) coreana n. sp. turned out to be new to science. This new species seems to be close to H. (G.) arcoferus Vosmaer, 1885, based on the type of spicules. However, it is different in size of toxa and growth form. Toxa of the new species is half in length compared to H. (G.) arcoferus. The growth form is jar shaped in this new species, but flat in H. (G.) arcoferus.

  • A study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Ulleungdo Island, Korea, from July 2001 to August 2003. Two species, Mycale (Naviculina) ulleugensis and Mycale (N.) neunggulensis, are new to science. Mycale (N.) ulleugensis n. sp. seems close to M. chungae based on the shape of spicules, but differs in the size of megascleres and sigmas, Mycale (N.) neunggulensis n. sp. seems close to M. flagellifer Vacelet and Vasseur in the type and size of spicules, but differs in the shape of naviculichela. Naviculichela I of M. flagellifer has a spine on the upper part of the felix.

  • A study on marine sponges was conducted with the materials collected by SCUBA diving in Hongdo and Gageodo Islands, Korea from September 2004 to July 2005. Clathria (Clathria) hongdoensis n. sp. and Clathria (Clathria) sohuksanensis n. sp. turned out to be new to the science. Clathria (Clathria) hongdoensis n. sp. closely seems to C. (C.) acanthstyli Hoshino (1981), based on their spicules type. However, they differ in the size of spicules and growth form. Clathria (Clathria) sohuksanensis n. sp. is similar to C. (C.) bicalthrata Hooper (1996), except for lacking small toxas.

  • We report a new record of Myurella nebulosa (Sowerby, 1825) collected by SCUBA diving from sandy bottom of subtidal zone in Jeju Island in Korea. The specimen of M. nebulosa is distinguished from its congeners by having slightly plump shell, high spire, distinctive subsutural band, deep axial ribs, numerous and shallow spiral ribs, ivory in color. In this report, we provided a brief morphological description and photographs of M. nebulosa. An unrooted phylogenetic tree for mitochondrial cox1 sequences using NJ analysis found Korean M. nebulosa sample was clustered with its conspecific sequences, but clearly separated from M. columellaris that is not easy to distinguishable based on external shell morphology alone.

  • During a scientific survey of Korean isopod fauna, we discovered two marine isopods, Limnoria segnoides Menzies, 1957 and Munna japonica Shimomura and Mawatari, 2001, which are new records to South Korea. Limnoria segnoides and M. japonica were collected by SCUBA diving from the subtidal zone of Jeju Island and Yangyang-gun in South Korea, respectively. In this paper, we provide diagnosis and illustrations of the two isopods. Additionally, we provide GenBank accession numbers of partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) of two species.

  • The purpose of this research is to define the relationship of sport commitment and re-participation intension in marine sports participant. For the purposes of this study, yachting, windsurfing, scuba diving, and mariner sports canoe total of 200 targets the participants involved in the survey. The results of exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis to analyze the construct validity and internal consistency were found to comply with the standard. Therefore, as a result of the correlation and regression analysis to analyze the relationship between the sport commitment and re-participation intension, the correlation between each variable and showed a positive correlation. Also, cognitive behavioral commitment and engagement of the sport commitment of marine sports enthusiasts was found on both the positive effect on the re-participation intension. As a result, the sport commitment turned out to be an important factor immersed in marine sports participation. In addition, it is believed to be on ways to increase positive emotions in empirical terms.

  • This study aims to provide preliminary data capable of suggesting directivity of an initiating start by understanding consumer awareness through analysis of SNS social big data on marine sports. This study selected windsurfing, yacht, jet ski, scuba diving and sea fishing as research subjects, and produced following results by setting period of total 1 month from January 22 through February 22, 2017 on the SNS (twitter, blog) through the Social MatrixTM service of Daumsoft Co., Ltd., and analyzing frequency of mention, associated words etc. First, sports that was mentioned the most out of marine sports was yacht, which was 3,273 cases on twitter and 2,199 on blog respectively. Second, the word which was shown the most associated with marine sports was the attribute showing unique characteristic of marine sports, which was 6,261 cases in total.

  • The two zooxanthellate scleractinian corals are newly recorded in Korea: Psammocora albopicta Benzoni, 2006 of the family Psammocoridae and Oulastrea crispata (Lamarck, 1816) of the family Faviidae. These families are also newly recorded in Korea. Specimens were collected from the subtidal zones of Jeju-do Island, Korea by SCUBA diving from 1999 to 2014. Two scleractinians are described based on the morphological characters of skeletal structures. Psammocora albopicta is distinguished by its encrusting cerioid growth form, high density of corallites, small calicular diameter, single styliform columella, and fewer rows of enclosed septa. Oulastrea crispata is characterized by its encrusting plocoid growth form, polygonal calicular shape, irregular paliform lobes, and papillose columella.

  • Three crab species, Macromedaeus orientalis, Eriphia smithi, and Ocypode cordimana, from Jejudo Island are recorded for the first time in Korea. M. orientalis was collected under the rocks by SCUBA diving in 20m and at low tidal mark. However, E. smithi and O. cordimana were collected in crevices of the rock at low tidal mark and in a burrow of sand beach at supra tidal mark, respectively. At present, E. smithi is the only species of the genus represented in Korean waters. Including the new records in this study, the established brachyuran fauna in Korea now comprises 203 species.
